Have just had time to catch up with this thread, and over all I feel really gloomy and despondent.
I know there have been a few good news stories for some individual women, but this event clearly shows that if anything women's rights are even further at the back of the queue than ever.
The organisers, the attendees, the police, the media all thought that threats of violence from a stage publicly supported by the London Mayor were nothing to worry about. ie when its trans vs. women, trans are always given rights, women are denied being impacted.
The media has, unsurprisingly not bothered to report this, though (as PPs have said) individual women not on a public platformed have been chased and harassed by police for comments that are nowhere near anything as bigoted and threatening as this.
Politicians are just not concerned, dont think it is a voted winner, to publicly stand up for women's rights.
But on the days when I think maybe FWR has become self regarding and a little bit inward looking, the comments on this thread have shown the true and essential value of having this space (with a few rules!) to stand up for women.
I know there have been those on social media also breaking through the deafening silence.
But it shouldn't have to be like this.
After all these years wouldn't it have been great if:
- SJB had been promptly if not arrested cautioned after finishing speaking
- Trans Pride organisers had apologised that an "unrepresentative" member of their community had threatened violence
- Sadiq Khan had issued a statement about how Trans Pride would not be allowed next year unless they committed to behaving in an acceptable way and better vetted their speakers
- The Labour politicians who spoke at the event also condemned what happened
- The UK's supposedly free and fair media has held the Trans Pride event to account in the same way they do other events that promote violence
None of this happened.
This is a profoundly disturbing snap shot of just how low on both the political and social agenda women are valued.
