Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Colonel 'forced out of Army' after stating 'men cannot be women'

IwantToRetire · 29/06/2023 23:32

In May, he shared a post on his private Facebook account from Fair Play for Women, a campaign group that works with governing bodies to preserve women’s sport for those born female, which consisted of a quote from Helen Joyce, a feminist campaigner backed by the author JK Rowling.
The quote, shared without any additional comment, said: “If women cannot stand in a public place and say ‘men cannot be women’, then we do not have women’s rights at all.”

This prompted a junior officer to warn him that his gender-critical views could be at odds with Ministry of Defence transgender policies, before what Dr Wright calls the Army’s “LGBT champions” allegedly drew up a seven-page dossier about his “substandard behaviour” – which he was not allowed to see.

A formal Army investigation was opened in May that could have led to him being formally dismissed or censured under the Major Administrative Action process, through which he has been asked to make a statement.

“This attack on my honour made my position completely untenable. I could no longer remain in an Army which treated its officers with such disrespect.

“What message does it send to women in the Army, that merely for noting the existence of women and women’s rights even a colonel can be placed under investigation? I therefore feel there is no other choice but to make this matter public.
“It makes you wonder who is running the Army: the Chief of the Defence Staff, or Stonewall?

@ButterflyHatched I doubt that someone who has done two tours of Afghanistan is "fragile". Lovely that you're pissing yourself with laughter at this man who was described as an inspirational leader by those who served with him.

I am absolutely laughing at the resounding 'ok, bye then' following this sanctimonious ragequit, yes.

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/07/2023 18:49

Do you want to try that again in English?

So it's a breach of the army's standards to support women's rights? Interesting take, but a bit of a lose-lose from your perspective: if it's not true, you're wrong, and, if it is true, the colonel was correct.

It's a breach of the army's standards to post transphobic propaganda on open social media directly linked to your service. It's also generally vile behaviour anyway!

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/07/2023 18:55

@ButterflyHatched do you have additional direct knowledge of this incident? The Telegraph reports it was posted, without comment, on his private Facebook account. Not an official service related social media account and not a public one.

Chersfrozenface · 03/07/2023 19:23

According to the Telegraph, he shared a post, on his his private Facebook page, that was a quotation reading "If women cannot stand in a public place and say ‘men cannot be women’, then we do not have women’s rights at all.”

There is nothing transphobic about that.

CarbonNeutral · 03/07/2023 19:36

Where's the transphobia @ButterflyHatched ? Specifically, point it out, I must have missed it.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 03/07/2023 19:39

Isn't he an Intensive Care consultant as well? So like most medics will have a clear understanding of biology, science & facts - just like the marvellous Prof Robert Winston?

Again, this is a total self-own on your part.

He re-posted "If women cannot stand in a public place and say ‘men cannot be women’, then we do not have women’s rights at all".

If you believe he should be silenced for that, you are proving his point.

Saying men cannot be women is 'transphobic propaganda'.

You are saying a belief that sex is immutable is 'transphobic', butterflyhatched?

EdithStourton · 03/07/2023 20:21

If the FSU has taken his case we may not have to garden...

But if we do, I'm willing to double-dig the entire veg patch for this bloke.

IwantToRetire · 03/07/2023 20:30

transphobic propaganda

You do know that there has been a court case that says it is not transphobic to say women are biological females.

So apart from trying to say the world is flat, how do you think your arguements in any way validate what you say when they are so blatantly untrue.

It's the country's loss, the Army's loss & a huge loss to the servicemen & women who will be without his example & his life-saving skills. He sounds like a great bloke. I say that as an ex-dependant of an officer in the UK forces.

JanesLittleGirl · 03/07/2023 22:57

So we have a guy who is an intensive care consultant. He volunteered as a reservist to make his skills availability to the army. The army send him twice to Afghanistan where he used his skills to keep soldiers alive. In between times he led a reserve army medical regiment and ensured that they had the highest professional and ethical standards. He posted a private post in support of the biological sex of women. What's not to like?

Sounds like the best man ever to me.

JumpInAndSwim · 03/07/2023 23:57

MOD is absolutely entrenched in trans activism.

It feels similar to those evangelical American Christians who are trying to be the best trans-allies ever, to make up for the horrible behaviour of their forefathers, while refusing to acknowledge that they're harming women on the way to their redemption.

Just a reminder to any other civil servants that the SEEN network exists and while members of the armed forces can't join, MOD employees can.

Yes, without the cover of their usual word-salad.

Fighting for women's rights is not 'anti trans'. Unless you are saying that trans rights are anti women.

And I find it pretty sick when organisations who run on taxes from women won't allow women to have a name for themselves. My money is good enough but my humanity isn't. Abusers.

This is so well put. Thank you.

The sexism was off the scale when I served but this woman-hating ideology just sticks the boot in again.

stunning, isn't it?
I wonder if we ex-military-women could do something?
When i served you were dismissed pre-12th week of pregnancy if you found yourself in that position. Just out on your ear.
Dismissed for having the tiniest, completely covered tattoo as a woman (not as a man)
Dismissed for being a lesbian. So many of my friends persevered, and it did depend where you were and so on, but a fair few were out on their ear for that.
alongside all the everyday and every day misogyny and sexism etc etc

EdithStourton · 04/07/2023 10:13

Helen Joyce a transphobe? FPFW transphobic?
@ButterflyHatched , have you any idea how ridiculous that makes you sound?

IcakethereforeIam · 04/07/2023 10:16

Probably libellous too.

Given that 'sex' has always been a protected characteristic under the Equalities Act (ever since the 'totally clear what it referred to' Sex Discrimination Act in the 1970s), what right do you have to accuse anyone of being 'a transphobe' who simply wants the long-established sex-based rights of their own sex to be recognised as they always used to be?
Surely it is obvious that the needs and wants of different protected characteristics could overlap? There needs to be nuance there but nothing is ever enough for 'gender identity ideologists' and women will not be rolling over and giving up our hard won rights, just because it is demanded with intimidation.
