Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Colonel 'forced out of Army' after stating 'men cannot be women'

IwantToRetire · 29/06/2023 23:32

In May, he shared a post on his private Facebook account from Fair Play for Women, a campaign group that works with governing bodies to preserve women’s sport for those born female, which consisted of a quote from Helen Joyce, a feminist campaigner backed by the author JK Rowling.
The quote, shared without any additional comment, said: “If women cannot stand in a public place and say ‘men cannot be women’, then we do not have women’s rights at all.”

This prompted a junior officer to warn him that his gender-critical views could be at odds with Ministry of Defence transgender policies, before what Dr Wright calls the Army’s “LGBT champions” allegedly drew up a seven-page dossier about his “substandard behaviour” – which he was not allowed to see.

A formal Army investigation was opened in May that could have led to him being formally dismissed or censured under the Major Administrative Action process, through which he has been asked to make a statement.

“This attack on my honour made my position completely untenable. I could no longer remain in an Army which treated its officers with such disrespect.

“What message does it send to women in the Army, that merely for noting the existence of women and women’s rights even a colonel can be placed under investigation? I therefore feel there is no other choice but to make this matter public.
“It makes you wonder who is running the Army: the Chief of the Defence Staff, or Stonewall?

Of 393 referrals in the past year, 133 women were diagnosed with the disorder...

DS1 is in the army, he and other soldiers in his regiment absolutely do say this. He won’t be told that a man can be a woman and he won’t have it that any man who may say he’s a woman can share a bed space with women. He’s argued up hill and down dale with officers, and won, about this.

Well done to your DS, but it's a fucking disgrace that he needs to. Sexual abuse of women is absolutely rampant in the military, as it is. And now they're going to let abusive men have even more access to vulnerable women?

The comments are everything I hoped for. If ARRSE had drunk the Kool-Aid, it really would have been time to abandon planet

ArabeIIaScott · 30/06/2023 20:05

Yes, somehow reassuring to read the fine detail on pension accrual for reservists. In between biological reality being asserted quite matter of factly.😁

'I think the FSU probably see a slam dunk opportunity to apply the Forestater precedent to the public sector, the question is whether they will be able to navigate the various injustices of the military justice system. If they expose both at the same time, that would be just great.'

Putin underestimated the wrong army.

Hi folks, I seldom post, but I was so heartened to read this thread. I don't know about anyone else, but this issue really, really angers me, as a woman. A teacher was sacked and suspended for two years for "misgendering" a child, and the misgendering accusation was upheld at an employment tribunal! It is literally crazy! He correctly gendered the child! And the Cass interim report has shone a light on potential harms of misgendering children. Yet doctors receive six month suspensions (probably on full pay) for sexual misconduct. It's just vile!

I am so grateful to the men who are standing up for the women, but I wish more men would, and why so few women seem to understand the serious implications around allowing men to self-ID as women, in law.

This "Let Women Speak" meeting in Manchester is really worth listening to:

Women need to organise more resistence, and support the campaigners. We need to form another policital party, stand for office and local councils, and get some boundaries in place.

I think so many people don't know what is happening. My partner, who reads loads of newpapers, has been denying everything I tell him. One time I mentioned that in the USA, organised crime is targeting women's families and getting protection money from them, so the women won't get raped by the criminals who have self-ID'd into their prisons, and I said that this could happen in the UK. A friend who was there at the time, said that it's already happening in Scottish prisons. She had found out from a colleague whose son is in prison.

It is heartbreaking!

I wonder whether the army would march to a different tune if they'd once again to rely on conscription to swell their ranks? Can you imagine the recruiting sergeant faced with a bunch of "trans women" trying to evade military service? "So you're a woman? Aye right son."

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 01/07/2023 12:30

That Arrse thread is a good read. Great to see Maya's case referenced on there a couple of times, and the upcoming Mermaids Vs LGB alliance.

This already happened in Ukraine. I don't like the Twitter posts, mocking the TW concerned. It's natural to be frightened of war - biological men, however they identify, should not be shamed for fear. But it does throw into sharp relief, the absurdity of gender ID. If Ukraine had allowed TW to opt out of fighting, the entire male population could just have ID-ed as female, leaving them with no army.

Chersfrozenface · 01/07/2023 13:23

In the USA, even under the batshit Biden administration, transwomen have to register for the draft and transmen are exempt.

To quote the Selective Service ""US citizens or immigrants who are born male and changed their gender to female are still required to register".

Thanks Arabella. The Telegraph article linked in our OP is reproduced in full in the first post of the ARRSE thread.

HirplesWithHaggis · 01/07/2023 21:15

I loved the thoughtful post on page 10, about moral courage and cowardice.

Backstreets · 01/07/2023 21:38

Yes, better root out the army men who actually cares about and supports women! The wrong kind of women I mean!

There was a point I really thought feminism had come far enough for us to take up new fights (defeating porn and the plastic surgery industry, for example) and yet here we see women being relegated to second class citizens again in real time. Even men who stand up for us are shouted down, and many women happily saw at the branch they’re sitting on. Madness

There are some testimonies of exactly this coming out of Ukraine. Males over 18 are forbidden from leaving the country; transwomen are of course included in that demographic and have not been allowed to leave.

No time to read the whole thread. However, wanted to search for scope of reporting; starting with The Guardian and the Independent thinking they would champion the scope of the discussion - nothing. That absence of reporting has raised/challenged my sense of a fair press.

Welcome to the Alice in Wonderland world where people who would not normally have much in common with more right wing papers, now have to rely on them for news.

Ditto the BBC - you would think they would report on this.

Reservist with a prominent and public social media profile ragequits after one of his junior officers points out he is in breach of the army's values and standards and social media policy and pursues the matter formally when told to stuff it. Doesn't even bother waiting for assessment - just slams the door and runs off screaming at the sight of a service complaint.

Nobody else is even bothering to run the story because they're too busy pissing themselves laughing at the fragility on display here.

So it's a breach of the army's standards to support women's rights? Interesting take, but a bit of a lose-lose from your perspective: if it's not true, you're wrong, and, if it is true, the colonel was correct.

Not only women's rights, but scientific fact, specifically biological fact, which as a medic it's really quite important for him to know about in detail.

Well you might like to say that's what happened but most people see a person with principles resigning in support of women's rights, and (but not sure of the nuances here) what seems to be accepted army practice in terms of investigating a complaint. Though do think the sense of betrayal he feels that a "junior" was allowed to do this is quite funny. But I think secreet investigations, not allowing access to the written version of the complaint makes the army and the junior officer look very suspect.

Presumably you think all women who go round moaning about not being respected, overlooked at work, subject to male violence are just being overly fragile.
