GLAAD calls on major social media platforms to *ban* the view that youth gender medicine is dangerous.

From Jesse Singal on twitter:

"1/ GLAAD has teamed up with a gaggle of celebrities to call on major social media platforms to ban the view that youth gender medicine is dangerous."

https://twitter.com/jessesingal/status/1673719867352948736?t=fTyjvLqF0vpYyam8j6fAQg&s=19

2/ If this policy were enacted, it would mean that users could get suspended or banned for e.g. publishing the Swedish health authority's view that "the risks of [youth gender medicine] currently outweigh the possible benefits[.]"

3/ This proposal is the natural endpoint of GLAAD's yearslong campaign to slander and bully anyone with questions about an area of medicine that, it turns out, is in dire evidentiary straits. Suppressing evidence and discussion is an awful, awful thing to do to trans youth.

4/ When I tried to reach out to GLAAD to discuss some of this stuff, I was informed "GLAAD is not a medical organization or association" and was referred to Jack Turban as a trustworthy expert.

I can't see Elon agreeing to this. But the rest of them? - probably :(

Signed by a not very long list of the usual suspects.

I think it won't be hard to ignore tbh.

The main thrust of their argument is: you're making money off all these people; stop. Not one that I see massive corps falling over themselves to support tbh.

WhiteFire · 27/06/2023 20:03

"We want to ban the view that youth gender medicine is dangerous."

Also

"We are not medical experts."

Make it make sense.

Thelnebriati · 27/06/2023 20:06

So this immediately loses them all credibility, right? Right?

Did they ever have any

RealityFan · 27/06/2023 20:19

I eagerly scanned the list to make sure noone I respect was on it. I got lucky.

Truth is stranger than fiction. Jazz Jennings is there. Wheels within wheels.

RoseslnTheHospital · 27/06/2023 20:29

I think surely social media orgs would be in legal hot water if they banned the governmental health organisations of several countries from publicly stating their evidenced and researched standpoints on the merits or not of treatment pathways.

Froodwithatowel · 27/06/2023 20:36

Get rid of inconvenient facts and thoughts by banning, punishment and trying to prevent anyone being able to see them written down.

Hasn't worked so far.

TheBiologyStupid · 27/06/2023 21:20

Bloody idiots! Shows how strong they think the scientific evidence is...

ArabeIIaScott · 27/06/2023 21:22

I've learned not to set any store by the morals of pop stars. Sadly.

CompleteGinasaur · 27/06/2023 21:25

Peer-reviewed medical journal citations, please...

TheGreatATuin · 27/06/2023 21:29

Patrick Stewart's on there. Thats a disappointment

Yes, I had vaguely thought he was sensible. Maybe it's some other Patrick Stewart.

NotBadConsidering · 27/06/2023 21:32

There are a few names on there that I am surprised and disappointed about but, hey ho, at least we know who is happy to see children sterilised.

Try watching Picard. He has totally drunk the koolaid.

TheDinosaurDuchess · 28/06/2023 02:07

This comment probably wont last long. But the vino is talking.

The way I see it, we have now reached Darwinian Theory.

If people want to run around, sterilising themselves, chopping bits off themselves so be it. They seem happy to do so and living their best lives. Good for them.

But they are basically performing some sort of self inflicted "eugenics". Give it a generation or two and this too shall pass.

PorcelinaV · 28/06/2023 03:55

Well they are against censorship for themselves:

"You must urgently take action to protect trans and LGBTQ users on your platforms (including protecting us from over-enforcement and censorship)."

Clymene · 28/06/2023 05:57

Doesn't this demand contravene the First Amendment?

Mostly usual suspects on there. I'm cringing for them. I thought Patrick Stewart was an intelligent supporter of women's rights.

Igneococcus · 28/06/2023 06:11

Taika Waititi, ffs really?

I doubt it strictly violates the First Amendment because it's not calling for government censorship but only censorship by private companies.

However, I still think it's a major free speech issue if all the main platforms are censoring people for LGBT wrongthink.

Clymene · 28/06/2023 06:14

Ah thank you @PorcelinaV

It's actually really chilling the amount of influence a bunch of actors, musicians and celebrities think they should have over mainstream media.

Egos the size of fucking planets

Delphinium20 · 28/06/2023 06:20

I'm not surprised they are getting nervous. NYTimes has posted on the past week some basic reporting on laws re: various trans issues and the comments (left wing readership) are overwhelmingly against the gender woo for kids. When people have the facts, the vast majority are opposed to sterilizing kids based on stereotypes.

Buffypaws · 28/06/2023 06:27

How embarrassing for them

"Sign this please, it's against hate", and they do it.

But anyone on that list can now be called out I guess. They have so little concern about giving drugs or surgery to children that they think the whole debate over it should be shut down. Well they can own that and justify it.

DysonSpheres · 28/06/2023 06:43

Celebrity influence is waning because of crap stunts like this. I can still remember many celebrities signing the ridiculous 'Yes, we use private jets, yes we're hypocrites, but we support Extinction Rebellion' which activist group at the time were stopping ordinary working class people from getting to work and making their measley minimum wage. Signed and endorsed by people who get paid millions for one movie and contribute more in one jet fueled weekend to green house emissions than an average broke person does in months.

In this context, I don't think they can truly understand what they're signing or putting their names to, or that some people may consider them as endorsing actual evil and find them repugnant ever after. I have read some detransister stories and seen some videos, seldom have I read such despair. I find what has been done to them to be frankly sick, twisted and evil. An example of an older generation literally consuming it's young. Morally reprehensible in every way.

If you are an adult with a healthy body, endorsing the removal of healthy reproductive organs in children or adults who are vulnerable... you are enabling deep evil.

Disappointed in Patrick Stewart but he is not his character. Perhaps being in too many sci-fi movies has skewed his sense of what science in capable of when it comes to hormone and surgical gender therapies.
