GLAAD calls on major social media platforms to *ban* the view that youth gender medicine is dangerous.

From Jesse Singal on twitter:

"1/ GLAAD has teamed up with a gaggle of celebrities to call on major social media platforms to ban the view that youth gender medicine is dangerous."

https://twitter.com/jessesingal/status/1673719867352948736?t=fTyjvLqF0vpYyam8j6fAQg&s=19

2/ If this policy were enacted, it would mean that users could get suspended or banned for e.g. publishing the Swedish health authority's view that "the risks of [youth gender medicine] currently outweigh the possible benefits[.]"

3/ This proposal is the natural endpoint of GLAAD's yearslong campaign to slander and bully anyone with questions about an area of medicine that, it turns out, is in dire evidentiary straits. Suppressing evidence and discussion is an awful, awful thing to do to trans youth.

4/ When I tried to reach out to GLAAD to discuss some of this stuff, I was informed "GLAAD is not a medical organization or association" and was referred to Jack Turban as a trustworthy expert.

Not to excuse Patrick Stewart but he is good friends with Ian McKellen and likely sees this as an extension of gay rights. I think McKellen is very much on the TRA side of this argument so it would make sense if he was influenced by this.

MorrisZapp · 28/06/2023 06:53

Of course they're going to sign it. It's a rainbow coloured missive from the good guys, the ones who have been fighting for gay rights since long before doing so was cool. Chuck in some buzzwords and flim flam and why wouldn't they sign it? It all sounds so kind and reasonable.

This is why force teaming is so harmful. People still think this is a gay rights issue.

both old enough to know better

Note that:

"Despite the fact that every leading medical and psychological association affirms the safety and necessity of gender affirming healthcare for trans people, including youth..."

This part of the letter isn't even going to be correct for the people that signed it outside of the US.

Motorina · 28/06/2023 07:10

If GLAAD were confident in the safety of trans youth healthcare, and had the evidence base to support that, they wouldn’t need to ban dissent.

There’s no need for Twitter to ban flat earthers because everyone with a brain can see their views are, uhhh, unorthodox.

This only comes because GLAAD knows the views of those who disagree with them have power. Otherwise, why ban them?

ArabeIIaScott · 28/06/2023 08:08

Yes. The death throes of 'no debate'.

I think we're well past that stage.

RealityFan · 28/06/2023 08:25

Ironic re Patrick Stewart. Maybe he should speak to Dennis Noel Kavanagh who coined the term Gender Borg.

Luckily in real life, Stewart doesn't get to command "Make it so".

Fenlandia · 28/06/2023 08:46

Utter plonkers caught up in self-righteous religious fervour, as if they're qualified to control what people read and say about medical treatment for distressed kids.

So Right!

I actually love to read about weird theories like Flat Earth, I don't know why. I'll read the comments passionately defending it too, ponder plausibilities and implausibilities and suspend belief for a while. It's an enjoyable way to pass the time. The- Ancient-Egyptians-were-Aliens, The-mountains-are-trees, we had ancient civilization on Mars...bring it on.

And generally you will see rational people debating people about these things because...

It is all completely bonkers. So it's totally doesn't need censoring.

The fact trans healthcare requires censoring is because you feel threatened by the debate and know the arguments against it are far from bonkers but very valid and the sunlight will come pouring in.

@Igneococcus "Taika Waititi, ffs really?" Sadly not really a surprise given the Our Flag Means Death fandom. It's a pirate romcom show he produces, directs and stars in that very much appeals to the Tumblr 'Good Omens' shipping girls. Take a look at the fan art - many drawings of characters with mastectomy scars, and cosplay fan photos showing their own, one even from a hospital bed. And look up #OFMD and 'top surgery' on Twitter. The main cast has only one female actor, who in real life identifies as 'non binary' and the show was congratulated by the Guardian (of course) for referring to the character as 'they/them'. In fan art, the ship's cook performs 'top surgery' on the character and in the top tweet cartoon the cook is barbecuing their amputated breasts. The actor was reportedly so encouraged by these fandom scenarios that they have now had 'top surgery' in real life, hoping the fanfiction ship's cook storyline will be written in to the next series, as with Page in Umbrella Academy. 'Catgender' has nothing on this. And where J K Rowling saw how emotionally vulnerable some obsessive fans of her work were to this ideology, she spoke out about it, it looks like Waititi is going the Gaiman route and embracing it instead.

Froodwithatowel · 28/06/2023 09:38

All that ^^

Added to the belief that people being permitted to hear other perspectives is dangerous .

An intolerable threat to believers.

Why? There's a whole doctorate in that.

Why should someone hearing a view that isn't theirs cause them to be 'unsafe' - does this mean uncomfortable? Doubting themselves? Feeling questioned or personally criticised?

Is the belief so fragile that it can only be maintained by the immersive fiction being enforced and enacted around the person at all times?

When this has become the responsibility and duty of all including strangers regarding their own beliefs, where is the morality in this? And the mental health aspects of being entirely reliant on all others providing the enactment required to cope? (causing them to 'not exist' unless others pick up their half of the script.)

Why should some have responsibility to provide this for others against their own beliefs? How can strangers be required to provide service like this where it's totally unreciprocated values and effort? To subordinate their own needs, feelings, inner life, everything, to nurturing the inner self of another? How is it going to work out, separating society into the givers and the takers?

And where have we seen this before in psychology, history, anthropology, what happens when you start comparing it to similar situations where no questioning or doubting can be permitted as too dangerous and threatening to the control of the group in power?

Doesn't this demand contravene the First Amendment?

Mostly usual suspects on there. I'm cringing for them. I thought Patrick Stewart was an intelligent supporter of women's rights.

The First only applies to government-funded organisations, hence private colleges are exempt (although good ones should abide by it anyway).

Actually, I seem to remember Cap. Picard was assimilated by the Borg...but heroically broke free.

Too bad that was fiction...

The two of them are twats, basically.

Igneococcus · 28/06/2023 11:57

I'm not really surprised that he is probably full on TWAW when I think about it either @IvyTwines but actually asking for people to be banned from voicing a view different to one's own is really disturbing.
I have friends and in-laws in NZ and I don't quite dare raise this topic with them.

meowgender · 28/06/2023 12:18

I don't see why Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok would change their policies just because a few celebrities and a load of transactivists signed some demanding letter. This is just posturing by GLAAD for their supporters.

Hmm, maybe while they're at it, they can all publically declare their support for the recent ACLU missive saying society was transphobic for not supporting a pathologically psychopathic misogynist, rapist and necrophiliac, in his heartfelt desire to become a non-man.

That is the new term to use, yes?

IvyTwines · 28/06/2023 17:20

@Igneococcus "but actually asking for people to be banned from voicing a view different to one's own is really disturbing." Yes, getting Orwellian - we've long known the young trans activists are like that, hashtag NoDebate lest their make-believe house of cards comes crashing down, but it's a shock to hear a demand for silence around the medicalisation of children being signed up to by a writer/director I'd considered smart and mature enough to know better, and old enough to have lived through several previous unfolding medical, big business, political and safeguarding scandals, many first revealed by brave whistleblowers.

JacquelinePot · 28/06/2023 18:48

Well those people have all made themselves look incredibly silly, haven't they?

Hardly any big names, though, which is encouraging if you care about all those non-entities and a smattering of mostly c list celebs.

FlippinFumin · 28/06/2023 18:50

Wasn't it only yesterday they were telling us that no one is transing kids? They cannot even keep up their own lies for two minutes. And I agree with everyone above, they have to stop us talking, because sunlight being shone on them shows up their fetishes and misogyny and predilections for the horrors they are.

DeanElderberry · 28/06/2023 19:50

what you all said, but also

Jesse Singal back on Twitter!

RudsyFarmer · 28/06/2023 19:57

Watch all those people reverse ferret once detransitioners become the majority within these communities and want compensation and explanations.

RealityFan · 28/06/2023 20:40

Remember the tone from these letters not 18 months ago? Demanding absolute obedience, zero tolerance.

Today? Still the shrillness. But now more of a pleading tone, requesting dialog be shut down, not expecting it.

Still hitting all the wrong bum notes, but now less a cacophony of hyenas and more of a howling of alleycats.

And look at the names. Other than Patrick Stewart, noone that anybody down the pub tonight would either know or respect.

And Jazz Jennings? Seriously?
What is this, the Stockholm Syndrome signature, or did lovely mum take it upon herself to sign on behalf? I mean she makes all the decisions for Jazz.
