Hmm…not sure the “wokeness” you’re laughing at is something to mock?

A diverse cast? Single sex relationships in cartoons? Are they really that bad?

LawyeredUp · 27/06/2023 12:13

*same sex

GloomySkies · 27/06/2023 12:20

Disney is having money problems like all the big studios - netflix and Paramount are losing money hand over fist too - but the Little Mermaid made about 500 million dollars at the box office, plus toys and merchandise, and Guardians of the Galaxy did over 830 million dollars at the box office, despite cinema audiences being down globally. Definitely not flops. Nothing to do with being 'woke'.

Hiphopopotamus · 27/06/2023 12:35

And this is in Feminism Sex and Gender because? Because you equate diversity, same sex relationships and general ‘liberal’ view points on a par with trans inclusive feminism? Good to have some confirmation over where those with GC views position themselves on other inclusivity issues.

Stickybackplasticbear · 27/06/2023 12:37

Yep this sums up what I think of loads of people on the board. How is diversity in casting a bad thing? Clearly hugely bigoted. Gross

Jeannieofthelamp · 27/06/2023 12:38

Nothing to do with wokeness, it's about lack of originality. The Marvel films are getting samey and the remakes of classic cartoons have largely been uninspiring (Little Mermaid is probably the best of the bunch). They need to innovate.

turbonerd · 27/06/2023 12:39

I love The Guardians of the Galaxy.
Misses point of thread. Or?

CheeseNPickle3 · 27/06/2023 12:44

Reading the article, it sounds like only having their films on their own Disney channels is what's losing them the most money. I think people are bored of live action remakes when they're too similar to the animated version too.

RattyHealy · 27/06/2023 12:45

@Hoardasurass could you make your point a bit clearer?

CuriouslyDifferent · 27/06/2023 12:48

Most certainly to do with wokeness.

Im a huge cinema fan and follow a lot of online chats, discussions, live chats etc.

The consensus is, most people are sick of the superhero rubbish, that gender swapping and having 5’2” waifs beat up 200 lbs guys, isn’t reality, that diversity castings are generally poor actors and don’t live up to their male predecessors. As a result they get called incels. However, about 40% of them are female.

Then there’s the ‘audiences are down’ trope. yeah Maverick, Guardians, and Avatar really suffered from footfall issues. Lol.

As a huge cinema fan - I’ve voted with my feet too. Tend to spend my cinema time these days, in pre 2008 works.

Disney at the heart of all of this, have huge financial issues now, and a $9bln bill for one of their purchases about to come due…. But the drivel still comes.

Ezra Miller - lauded by many as beautiful fascinating etc etc. The flash has bombed. can’t be anything to do with his mad antics off set including the restraining order re: very young teenage girl or the kidnapping incident, or the superhero trope been worn to pieces.

It’s Bud Light just on a bigger scale.

thank goodness.

One hopes that we will get great movies some time soon, Tom Cruise is out in about 10 days, non woke storytelling, watch the billions roll in.

But yeah, nothing to do with woke.

I totally agree. The word has been weaponised and the meaning mocked. The dictionary definition is clear.

Little Mermaid also cost around £250million to make and £150 million for marketing.

WhiteFire · 27/06/2023 12:52

Light-year was as dull as dishwater. The live remakes are not my thing. Disney has lost what made it special.

I'm not sure it is just down to 'wokeness' , but the cinema is expensive so numbers overall must have dropped surely.

Flickersy · 27/06/2023 12:54

I see you've namechanged again.

Good to know you think non-white actors and gay relationships are problematic too.

musixa · 27/06/2023 12:54

I don't normally defend Disney, but casting a Black woman in the Little Mermaid role and having a lesbian couple in LightYear should not be regarded as 'out there' choices.

GloomySkies · 27/06/2023 12:58

IWillNoLie · 27/06/2023 12:50

250 + 150 = 400
400 is 100 less than 500
100 million profit after production and marketing, before toy sales, is not a loss. So I'm not sure what your point is.

Brokendaughter · 27/06/2023 12:58

When Disney insist on stamping all over everything to hammer a message down childrens throats that parents have zero interest in them having to hear, they will lose money.

Have you seen their stupid woke version of Peter Pan?
The Lost Boys aren't even allowed to be the Lost Boys any longer, they have to have some girls there too (completely missing the point in the original book that girls aren't that dumb).
Wendy has been turned into a cardboard cut out 'girl who doesn't need a man to save her' like EVERY OTHER bloody female character lately as if there is only one type of female allowed in films.

I honestly couldn't care less if the ethnicity of the Little Mermaid is changed, but they also changed her into a flat, lifeless character, added some crap woke songs & I found the CG sea creatures fairly repulsive.

I don't even bother considering an offering from Disney any more.
Everything they touch turns to shit nowadays.

This dictionary? https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Woke

WOKE

When this term became popularized, initially the meaning of this term was when an individual become more aware of the social injustice. Or basically, any current affairs related like biased, discrimination, or double-standards.

However, as time passed by, people started using this term recklessly, assigning this term to themselves or someone they know to boost their confidence and reassure them that they have the moral high grounds and are fighting for the better world. And sometimes even using it as a way to protect themselves from other people's opinion, by considering the 'outsider' as non-woke. While people that are in line with their belief as woke. Meaning that those 'outsiders' have been brainwash by the society and couldn't see the truth. Thus, filtering everything that the 'outsider' gives regardless whether it is rationale or not.

And as of now, the original meaning is slowly fading and instead, is used more often to term someone as hypocritical and think they are the 'enlightened' despite the fact that they are extremely close-minded and are unable to accept other people's criticism or different perspective. Especially considering the existence of echo chamber(media) that helped them to find other like-minded individuals, thus, further solidifying their 'progressive' opinion.

Urban Dictionary: social injustice

a completely mismatched couple where either the guy or girl is 2 points or more better looking than the other on a 10 point scale

Totally agree. And Ron DeSantis is a tool, even though I agree with him on some women's rights issues (while totally disagreeing on others, notably abortion). The whole war on Disney is idiotic grand-standing.

TripleDaisySummer · 27/06/2023 13:01

Disney+ is bleeding money but I'm not sure it's woke messaging per se more the bad writing that seems to so frequently accompanying it and if audiences doesn't turn up attacking the fan base as toxic.

I don't think it's a Disney specific issue either but it's an issue for fair bit of Disney+ content and their films and then tack on wider issues such as fewer cinema goers and declining streaming audiences - seems a bad time to step into toxic US political debates and risk alienating some of your audience even further.

lostinfusion · 27/06/2023 13:02

I don't understand the remake of the little mermaid - in my mind Arial is a red headed girl

why not make a new disney princess rather than just change the race of a current story, surely that is more racist?

IWillNoLie · 27/06/2023 13:06

GloomySkies · 27/06/2023 12:58

Yes I can do basic maths. It was to put the £500 million box office receipts in context. 25% return over four years is hardly brilliant, especially when it was a remake so no outlay of scripts etc.

Newnamenewname109870 · 27/06/2023 13:10

er yeahh because we all hate women and black people and gay people don’t we 🙄 hilarious

more likely people can’t afford to see films anymore

TripleDaisySummer · 27/06/2023 13:10

lesbian couple in LightYear - that seemed perfectly normal to me but film was dull and I think there was some issue with actor Tim Allen being dropped - and some speculation it was his politics.

There was some issue with Mandalorian actress being dropped though I think her comments were bad - it did get repackaged as issues with her being on the political right.

Then there rows with Ron DeSantis.

Given how toxic US politics is at the minute - perhaps they should have foreseen this being more of an issue for them and headed it off a bit better.

gloov · 27/06/2023 13:11

What's wrong with having gay people and black people in movies, OP?

What's this got to do with feminism?

I don't get your point. It seems like alt right culture war bullshit.
