Am looking forward to tomorrow’s debate on the Equality Act. Anyone else planning to watch it?

Oh how surprising that it descends into "what a particular trans person is like and how people talk about them to their face"

I'm trying to watch on iPlayer and it's not playing.

AmuseBish · 12/06/2023 13:24

How can Crispin Blunt say "it would be terrible for people to have to use facilities they don't feel comfortable in" and not be able to think that through? What does that mean for WOMEN?

Exactly - it would be laughable if it wasn't so important.
Some people I wonder if they're dishonest or thick.

xabia · 12/06/2023 13:26

Not surprised at all by Blunt but the Labour MP- Siobhan? - made some great points in her support of Maya.

QuickWash · 12/06/2023 13:30

In some ways, I feel really sad for RMW. They seem to have no insight into how they come across and how recounting the tale of how all 20 women in their gym class said they are fine with them invading their space really sounds a bit like a child who is doesn't get the complexities of friendships and social interactions and takes the actions of others on face value.

If RMW really does believe they're female, really does believe that no women have any issue with them in their spaces and really does believe that other people see them as a woman then RMW lives in such a state of delusion that someone close to them should be keeping them out of the public eye and looking after them.

RMW very clearly demonstrated that they are not seeking solutions to accommodate women's needs and wishes, they are not prepared to accept anything other than complete validation, capitulation and domination. That makes me feel not at all sorry for them and really cross.

xabia · 12/06/2023 13:31

If Labour female MPs are feeling more confident that they can speak out then the tide is really turning.

He said it very quickly and kept talking to prevent anyone pointing out the obvious flaw in what he was saying. He knows, he just wanted to centre the "most vulnerable".

Did you see how quickly Maya's mention of Muslim women was glossed over. Not one of those there picked up AT ALL on the needs of other more marginalised groups.

Yes, to say "I do agree with Maya on this" is bravery indeed.

No, it'll make me too angry as men MPs miss the point and Lucas etc peddle the "most disadvantaged in society" myth.

If RMW stated that they were 'somatically' a woman that makes no sense at all as that refers to the body rather than the mind.

ResisterRex · 12/06/2023 13:58

The idea that you're going to object in a situation like that is preposterous. Only with my DC, would I even consider it. I'd more likely leave, wait, then try to use the changing rooms or loos again after I think enough time has passed.

Boiledbeetle · 12/06/2023 14:01

Well... the Maya Robin interview is going down well on twitter.

I wonder what most people seems to be talking about?

Boiledbeetle · 12/06/2023 14:01

or rather who

Needmoresleep · 12/06/2023 14:03

Is the public allowed to watch. MN have just told me I won a book (Wavewaller) in a competition so am heading up to a bookshop to collect. Conveniently near Westminster Hall. Will anyone else be there?

Yes, I think that's what they said. Odd word choice.

Yes. That's really good to see.

Why is RMW making the point about female to male people? That's the group highlighted as losing rights under "for all purposes" (which the GRA was not - see all the peerages and so on). That group would lose maternity rights.

Clearly nobody in the trans movement cares about transmen or whether they lose rights.

I was impressed by her and especially how clearly and sharply she was able to cut through to all the important issues for women. What is her name and where is her constituency?

NothingTraLaLa · 12/06/2023 14:28

I noticed that Robin said that we should think of “trans” as meaning “transitioning” (that was the gist anyway). I’m not sure that tallies with the Stonewall trans umbrella, or indeed the claim that “cis” is the opposite of trans. Is Robin trying to make people think of Hayley Cropper when they think of a transwoman rather than, say, Isla Bryson?

stealtheatingtunnocks · 12/06/2023 14:31

It is striking that the trans representation always focuses on me me me.

always.

Maya managed to make her points without referencing her fanny, too. Wonder why RMW feels the need to share the news that RMW had “surgery” in every interview?

there must be a reason. I can’t think what it might be though. All I know is that I know more about RMWs crotch than the debate from that interview.

QuickWash · 12/06/2023 14:32

Yes RMW states "trans" stands for "transitioned" and believes the reward for this is access to the opposite sex's single sex spaces. RMW seems to say that they deserve the prize ie validation.

I thought RMW was deflecting and also implying,

“See? You all have not been thinking of women like you thought you were: your campatriots, transmen, are desperate to pee in the Gents’; and ordinary women will be horrified to see these male-like apparitions in the Ladies’ if that’s where the law forces them.”

Meanwhile while time in the programme has gone on that non-issue, all the other really important ones may get no mention.
