Anyone else feel Pride is really toned down this year?

Moonandstarz · 08/06/2023 11:08

I was shopping yesterday evening in my local shopping centre & besides Primark & Schuh no other stores had a pride window display or even a sticker on the window. Flying Tiger had rainbow merchandise on the window but not specifically pride.
Precious years we had rainbow crossings in the car park, rainbow flags everywhere. Nothing like that this year.

In my opinion this toned down pride is much more inclusive & is signalling everyone is getting on with their lives & co existing. May just be my area but I found it very refreshing.

Maybe @SarahAndQuack, who’s suddenly gone quiet, can help enlighten….

I didn't 'suddenly go quiet'. As I said, I went to pick my daughter up from school. Is that ok with you? Good.

I have no idea what the question is about - if you just want my view, then I'll refer you back to my earlier post where I said it's not worth my time debating this one.

@Moonandstarz - I've already answered this question. It's not worth my time debating. I'm not actually obliged to discuss any subject you choose, you know. Your OP was worth debating, because I know that there are people who really don't see how tacit homophobia has been increasing, and who might listen and learn. Sadly, I don't think (on MN) that the trans debate ever ends up going well.

It is beyond appalling that you think gay people face no more discrimination than people with blue eyes.

Well it’s clear you don’t think it’s ‘normal’ within society to be gay but I know so many people who are openly not straight it barely registers.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 08/06/2023 16:22

PRIDE is crucial in showing these people that their prejudices aren't supported by society as a whole

I agree in principle, but the problem is bigger than the TQ colonisation. Even if you wiped that away, Pride events have mutated in ways that fuel prejudice, instead of combating it. They have become about displays of male sexual gratification and kinks. Most people don't think that is OK in a public setting, whatever your sexual orientation. And it reinforces the old homophobic prejudice about gay men being obsessed with/driven by sex. It's undermining all the work of the 90s/00s to convince the public that gay people are normal people who happen to be same-sex attracted.* *

When I see some Pride events now, I feel like I am watching some 1980s TV evangelist's dire prognostications of what normalising gay relationships would bring. Not the whole of the events, obviously - it's still great seeing professional groups, unions etc, celebrating gay members. But more and more of Pride is about furries, BDSM, and pornified men. It's grim - IDGAF what consenting adults do in private, but I don't want to be a prop for someone else's fetish, and - more importantly - I think it's rolling back public acceptance of gay people.

But you can actually speak from a lgb perspective, I'm paraphrasing friends & family.

Pride isn’t about highlighting the discrimination that gay people face - that ship was hijacked and sailed a while ago.

It very much still is.

Very much now isn’t. The Pride of now and the Pride of yesteryear is very different.

Explain how you can support Pride as a lesbian when it is in fact very anti lesbian & why would you put your child in that environment?
@MissLucyEyelesbarrow provided links above to the anti lesbian narrative at Pride last year. Why do you think it's important to put your child in that type of environment?

Don't be so rude. You do not get to dictate how I respond on a thread, just because you started it (with a rather different question, which I think we've already covered).

I don't believe Pride is anti-lesbian. My child benefits, as I have said in three separate posts now, from seeing other two-mum families. I think this is important. I do not recognise the descriptions of Pride I'm seeing here, and I am not interested in conspiracy theories.

Now - if it's ok with everyone? - I am going to get my hair cut.

Well, tell you what, if you give back the 11 months that are 'Heterosexual Month,' and ensure that gay people aren't getting beaten up for being gay in public, then we'll give up on Pride Month. How does that sound?

You don't have to do anything else with the 11 months of Straight Pride except ensure no gay people get attacked for being gay, and I would still be happy to give up Pride Month.

Can't do it? Oh, thought so.

Gay legend and veteran of the Stonewall Riots was assaulted at a Pride march by the people marching, FFS! Get the L Out have been ostracised at Pride marches, lesbians elsewhere in Europe have had their banners snatched and destroyed at Pride events. Perhaps this is why some gay and lesbian people are getting sick of the direction that Pride has taken in recent years?

TheBiologyStupid · 08/06/2023 16:34

Oops, Fred Sergeant's name somehow went AWOL there.

I don't think homophobia has been increasing; other than via the implicit homophobia of much trans activism. Lesbophobia is certainly on the increase, though - as a generation of lesbians are transed.

It was ineveitable that if there was no differentiation between the LGB and the T that the LGB would get caught up in the conflict between women rights and the trans agenda.

So, now, whenever you hear the phrase "LGBTQ+ hate crimes up" you are unable to differentiate between women being called hateful bigots for wanting protect their dignity and integrity as women, and actual attacks on gay men and lesbians.

Moonandstarz · 08/06/2023 16:38

@SarahAndQuack you can give perspective. You said you believed Pride was important. Posts provided & many posters replied saying how anti lesbian pride actually is. I was struggling to understand how you think your child benefits in that environment with such obvious hostility towards it's parents.
My friends avoid pride for the very same reasons @MissLucyEyelesbarrow linked & it really struck a chord with me as I know of many lesbians who give it a very wide berth including those with children of their own..

It seems that you and I get different meaning from the same posts!

The "tiring " comment is mine and it was made in relation to commerical, in your face celebration. That is tiring - not gay people.

Now! I hope that is very clear to you.

HarpyValley · 08/06/2023 16:41

I've been watching the growth of this ideology for years (regular longstanding poster, recent name change) and I still don't understand how a so-called gender identity is the same as a sexual orientation, or why LGB people benefit from being force-teamed with the TQ+. I can see the benefit for the latter but not the former.

Needmoresleep · 08/06/2023 16:44

I was googling for a florist. The first said "LGBT friendly". Quick eyeroll as I wanted flowers not virtue signalling, and I chose the next one on the list.

I don't know if this is an increasingly common customer reaction.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 08/06/2023 16:45

I am not interested in conspiracy theories.

What is the conspiracy theory, exactly?

Are you denying that the Cotton Ceiling exists? Because that is demonstrably true. TW who identify as lesbians are explicit and open about it. So how is it a conspiracy?

Florissante · 08/06/2023 16:46

That would be my reaction, @Needmoresleep.

Where the differernce between flowers & lgb flowers? I wouldn't support either!

How very tiresome.

NotHavingIt · 08/06/2023 16:51

One of the issues with the forced teaming of LGB with the TQ+ is that whenever anyone hears the phrase LGBTQ they immediately think of the T and the Q and all the rest of the newly invented identities. I certainly do.

I understand that in the U.S recently a bill was delayed being passed that ensured LGB rights and protections, for the reason that the law makers were unhappy with the TQ demands which were being sold as a part of a job lot - so they refused to pass the bill in its presenting form.

This was then presented as LGB rights going backwards or under threat, and indeed because of the forced teeming of two very different things - LGB rights may well end up going backwards.
