Anyone seen the tweet by Maya tonight about this little animation by Oxfam? Here’s the link:

Pp have mentioned the similarity between nazi era anti semitic caricatures and this. Someone on twitter posted a side by side comparison and...omg!

Well having read the vitriol in this thread and on twitter, have to hand it to Oxfam for calling out the anti LGBT hate and standing strong. Ethics over profits. Rare in this say and age. I'll certainly be shopping more there given their inclusion, and I dont feel as a woman excluded. Far from it.

BabyStopCryin · 06/06/2023 10:41

Yeah right. You have eyes?

Oxfam in my town really struggles to get volunteers - they keep reducing the hours the shop is open.

It's starting to look like a company that is on a downward spiral, tbh.

What a shame for a once-great charity.

After the Haiti reports I noticed our local branch had reduced its hours because they couldn't get volunteers. I boycotted them for the Haiti affair and because when I lugged in a big bag of donations the woman behind the counter moaned about 'not more books!'

BHF were grateful for them, though.

I've been hanging on, thinking that they would attempt to improve what has hardly been an image in keeping with the Quaker origins, and because the lovely ancient hags in my local shop do a brilliant job, and it's the only charity shop for miles. But I've printed off that comparison between the drawing and JKR's image as a summary of what has done it, and intend to say about the rape silence training, and backing mastectomy and take it in instead of the books and the bubblewrap I was taking in today, and write this thread's and the twitter thread's addresses on the back.

What I find curious about the posts there from TRAs is the utter belief that they are right. They aren't being nasty for the sake of it, they are writing from another universe, in which the world is as they believe and not as it is. Read too many of them, and one can find oneself questioning one's own beliefs. But looking at that picture brings one back to reality. They look at Rowling, and they see that, and think we see that in our mirrors. Evil Bee explains that.

Great post. (Casual agism too).

There is no way that isn't a deliberate comparison.

Poor Mishy thinks that women calling out hate is hateful.

I don't want to be unkind, Mishy, but you're really not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you?

Nice to see inclusion extending to child rapists.

They have deleted the tweet and tweeted this response

It's still on their youtube channel though

Women saying 'no' is not vitriol. And given the sexual violence by Oxfam workers against women and girls, it seems to be something that Oxfam gave a real issue with.

It's entirely deliberate. One of the Oxfam figures is even yellow (i.e. how Jews are portrayed in anti-Semitic propaganda).

The New Misogyny and the New Anti-Semitism (not that either ever went away) are intimately linked, as we saw with the Corbynistas.

As a charity, Oxfam shouldn't be making profits at all - all income should be used for its charitable purposes which are to relieve poverty, combat distress and alleviate suffering.

Alienating a substantial number of their regular donors and volunteers won't harm their profits, but it will significantly reduce the proportion of their income which will go to meet their charitable objectives.

That you think Oxfam are ethical reflects very, very badly on you.

Poster has all the approved vocab though - 'vitriol, ' hate,' 'inclusion.'

ChristinaXYZ · 06/06/2023 10:57

Reporting the video to YouTube is a good idea. What's the best approach to take to be successful?

What will it take you to call out anything?

Rape of 12 year old girls, is now 'ethics'?

Crikey.

Beowulfa · 06/06/2023 10:58

I give up an evening per week to volunteer at a long-established local charity with a lot of community support. Names and contact details of all the trustees, plus local and national safeguarding leads are prominently displayed. When you see the results a focused and competent local charity can achieve, you wonder how some of the big brand charities lost their way.

Note that this charity, like the Oxfam shop I volunteered at for a while in my 20s, is kept going solely by older female volunteers.

fabricstash · 06/06/2023 11:01

I cancelled my donation to them earlier this year. There are plenty of other charities out there

So knowing you don't care about all the things discussed here. Ya know, boring crap like child rape victims, stuff like that.

Just wanna check one thing: you even OK with what looks like the desecration of the memory of those that died defending this country?

I'm curious to know where the line is. Or, if like queer theory says: there should be no lines.

"The graphic displayed what seemed to be like her usual haircut and style, as well as a green dress she is frequently pictured wearing.

A memorial poppy she has donned in the real image - taken at a 2018 film premiere - is replaced with a badge, bearing the word 'Terf'."

Another Charity off the donation list. The promotion of trans versus the biological reality. The trans really have managed to convince some big stores and big charities that the men are victims haven't they.
