Anyone seen the tweet by Maya tonight about this little animation by Oxfam? Here’s the link:

You know @GulesMeansRed the only way they'll change is if you all just stop. They are demonising women who are the backbone of their organisation. Withdraw your labour.

We don't have to politely take this shit. You're volunteers, you're not earning anything. Tell them to fuck off with their misogynist hate b

This, I can't help but feel your time would be better spent volunteering elsewhere.

I certainly wouldn't volunteer for an organisation which enabled its workers to rape children. There are loads of charity shops crying out for volunteers, women's shelters, refugee centres, the list is pretty much endless and it's quite easy to find a multitude of organisations that will value those who work for free rather than patronise and demonise them.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/06/2023 23:31

It's racist as all hell, with the demonised Chinese and Japanese caricatures
as well as this

Fuck Oxfam
AlisonDonut · 05/06/2023 23:37

Crikey.

What delights will day 6 of Pride bring? It gets worse every time I open twitter up. But we can't say anything lest we are accused of homophobia.

IneedanewTV · 05/06/2023 23:38

I wonder whether it’s worth complaining to the charity commission?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 05/06/2023 23:39

Fuck them. Absolutely had it.

fitnessmummy · 05/06/2023 23:41

Can someone explain this to me in idiot terms? Sorry I'm just not up to speed with all this stuff but want to know more 👍🏻

I wondered about that. Just checked and they say complaints should go to the charity itself in the first instance.

I'm fucking appalled. Now back to the top to read what everyone else has to say!

It's Pride Month. Oxfam are going big on it. One of the things they've produced is a short animated video on YouTube (click on Twitter link at start of this thread).

It wants to be supportive of LGBTQ+ people. But the Oxfam video itself peddles cruel stereotypes, not least the older white woman with a badge identifying her as a TERF (a slur referring to women critical of gender ideology), being hateful.

In recent years Oxfam had scandals where workers overseas raped women they were meant to be helping. For lots of people this will be the last straw, as it will confirm fears that Oxfam is toxic and misogynistic.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 06/06/2023 00:06

I get the impression Oxfam aren’t that interested in their shops, my local high street is teeming with quality charity shops that have each found their own niche (designer handbags/books/mountains of shoes) and are always busy, apart from the Oxfam shop which is sparse, rarely open and smells terrible (is that the damp?).

EpicChaos · 06/06/2023 00:14

@GulesMeansRed I fully agree with @dimorphism and @Clymene , i certainly wouldn't give my time and labour free, gratis and for nothing, to a charity that thinks you're scum! You're doing them a favour, meanwhile, they are being paid a fortune for doing sod all other than walking all over you as if you're some sort of worthless doormat.
There are plenty of other charities that are crying out for help where you might find that you are valued and appreciated. If you continue to put up with being treat in that manner by oxfam, they'll take it as tacit support and will continue to stamp and walk all over you, with their big, dirty jackboots.
From what i can tell, the ceo earns??? almost £120K per year, not much poverty in his house is there?! And you put up with that treatment for nothing?

Litterpicking · 06/06/2023 00:16

thesociologicalreview.org/reviews/me-not-you-by-alison-phipps/

A book by a white, middle class female professor reviewed by another white, middle class, female professor! It's a dog-eat-dog world in the humanities departments in universities! "Please don't hate us for our white privilege. Look we hate ourselves too!" I wonder if white, male academics have to engage in similar self-immolation?

dimorphism · 06/06/2023 00:27

On a practical point, I seriously doubt that Oxfam is effective in channelling money raised to disasters. They've shown they're untrustworthy and I bet that's financial as well as moral. There are other charities who operate more effectively in disaster situations, where more of the money gets to the people in need. Even on that narrow metric alone, Oxfam is not the best bet. A lot of the big charities have lots of staff on big salaries and high overheads - smaller charities seem to be a lot better at getting money to people in need as well as being transparent, and also tend not to patronise and bully the people they're supposed to be helping (what if the people in disaster zones believe in biological reality i.e. are 'terfs'? Will they check their thinking before helping them?).

Onjali Rauf has a charity helping refugees. They have a form you can fill in if you wish to volunteer. Might be worth giving that a go.

EdithStourton · 06/06/2023 00:42

They're being ratioed to fuck in the comments below the YouTube video

Good.

BlueIbex · 06/06/2023 00:58

It feels like we've fallen down the rabbit hole. I don't understand how everyone isn't completely outraged. How can anyone nod away and support all of this?

Toxicityofourcity · 06/06/2023 01:10

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 05/06/2023 22:43

I don't normally do boycotting, but I think it's safe to say that I'm now done with Oxfam

they can get to fuck

Likewise

HeddaGarbled · 06/06/2023 01:17

I’ve just emailed to cancel my subscription and the automatic reply says they’re “experiencing higher volumes”.

EasterBreak · 06/06/2023 01:28

I work in a sector where many of my colleagues have worked for Oxfam in the past and some of the stuff that went on and was covered up is awful. Not very charity focused. More money making.

IcakethereforeIam · 06/06/2023 01:31

Seems to be from OxfamIndia, would that explain it. The person got mixed up with the country.

I nearly went in an Oxfam on Sunday, then I remembered I wasn't spending my money there because of their previous misogyny. I'm glad I didn't because this...this is off the charts.

EpicChaos · 06/06/2023 01:32

For anyone stopping their direct debits/standing orders, make sure you check if you need to do so directly from your bank, not just expecting oxfam to stop taking the money.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 06/06/2023 05:55

Who do they think supports charities and buys from their shops?
They are certainly living in a bubble.

BarleySugars · 06/06/2023 06:02

Wow. That article about reporting rape being contemptible! Oxfam should be shut down!

Motnight · 06/06/2023 06:20

That is awful.

OldGardinia · 06/06/2023 06:50

Years back I fundrose for Oxfam. Raised over £50,000. I remember someone coming up to me and telling me how corrupt the people running Oxfam were. I was a younger gardinia then and I'm afraid it all just bounced off my arrogant assurance that he was some xenophobic bigot. I don't recall actually engaging with his arguments at all - just repeating the Oxfam lines. He walked off and I'm afraid I probably had a smug smile on my face.

It's amazing how arrogantly certain of our moral superiority we can be when we are young. And how easily we can be used because of it.

This is everywhere. Universities are churning out people whose main skill set is to support each other into getting into leadership positions and then repurposing the organization to other ends. It will take active organization to stop it.
