Is girl guides single sex again?

Chilledp · 25/05/2023 19:28

Does anyone know if girl guides have applied some common sense yet? I.e. Just available for girls/ female children once again ?
I did look on their website but couldn't see any clarification. But that may just be me not being able to navigate to the right page, clicked on a few that I thought might clarify but couldn't find any info.
Thank you

Guiding has always been girls only? Scouts (beavers, cubs etc) is mixed sex.

Patchworksack · 25/05/2023 19:31

Or do you mean do they allow trans (AMAB) children?

Guiding has rewritten history to say it has always been single gender ...
They have in recent past at least had a policy of not informing parents of girls they will be sharing tents and washing facilities with transgirls.

I have no issue with trans children there, as long as they are female.

Lots of places seem to have seen common sense, hoping girl guides is one of them but can't see either way on their website.

Patchworksack, if by AMAB you mean “assigned male at birth”, that is a nonsensical term.
Sex is fixed at conception, observed prenatally on ultrasound scan, and merely confirmed by visual inspection at birth. Nobody “assigns” anything.

I was wondering what that meant!
Agreed.

OP, Girl Guides have sacked whistleblowers and safeguarding officers for objecting to their policy of allowing intact males to share girls dormitories and tents without informing either the girls or their parents that the accommodation will be mixed sex.
I very much doubt they have had a Damascene conversion to safety, privacy and common sense, but one can live in hope.

https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/information-for-volunteers/running-your-unit/including-all/supporting-trans-members/

This suggests they let male persons join if they think they are women/girls

I didn't see that page. Thank you.
Shame it isn't single sex. 😔

Indeed. They've done a bizarre mix of separating out sex and gender... Big tick so far... But then making everyone eligible to be a "girl": girls who don't identify as girls (because they don't have a gender identity), boys who identify as girls and girls who identify as boys are all "girls".

So therefore, mixed sex "girls only". An oxymoron if ever there was one.

From their website:

As a girl-only charity we accept young members who are biologically female (under the protected characteristic of sex) and those whose gender identity is a girl or woman (under the protected characteristic of gender reassignment). This means that we would accept trans boys as new young members based on their sex.

I've taken my daughter out of guides because of this. Tbf she was getting bored anyway, they never seemed to do anything interesting 🤔 they just seemed to sit around and talk or do a bit of craft 🙄

It is such a shame, it would be so great if it were single sex. 😔 So dangerous, I do wonder how many parents of girls in guides are aware.

I think it was maybe 2 or 3 years ago I read about all this, shocking women were fired for safeguarding girls, I didn't know about that. I was hoping they'd seen common sense, but clearly they haven't.

Thank you everyone for clarifying.

Maybe we're not missing out on much then!

You're right, totally bizarre.
I didn't see that on the site. Definitely won't be signing up. Thank you.

Ah, so they've not moved forward on from the stereotypical "girl" activities of yesteryear then.

That's exactly why I left and went to scouts. My brother was doing far much more fun stuff so I wasn't going to miss out on that.

Do scouts apply appropriate sex-based segregation at camps etc?

@Chilledp

I'm now wondering the same. My daughter is on a waiting list for the local one but in beavers she did a sleepover with the boys. Maybe that's ok because they are so young. I'm feeling like a bit of a hypocrite because I didn't object to the girls inclusion.

Saying that they did have a girls tent and they were all in a hall for one night

nothingcomestonothing · 25/05/2023 19:53

As a girl-only charity we accept young members who are biologically female (under the protected characteristic of sex) and those whose gender identity is a girl or woman (under the protected characteristic of gender reassignment). This means that we would accept trans boys as new young members based on their sex.

This is such a common misconception though isnt it? Thanks to Stonewall and their ilk 'getting ahead of the law' and training organisations in what they'd like the law to be, not what it is.

Having the protected characteristic of gender reassignment does not mean that you have to be treated as the gender you want to be. It means you can't be discriminated against because you have the protected characteristic. The comparator for whether a transwomen has been discriminated against is not a woman, it's a man. Males have no right under the protected characteristic of gender reassignment to join Guides, they have the right not to be treated less favourably than other males without the characteristic. On this case, they are being treated more favourably than other males - I wonder if a boy without a gender identity would have a case against Guides on the grounds that they are discriminating against him?

ZeldaFighter · 25/05/2023 19:57

In my area, a few girls are in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. They either have separate rooms/tents or share with the Leaders of the same sex, as far as I am aware.

Scouting takes safeguarding very seriously

LotsOfBalloons · 25/05/2023 20:03

Yup we've moved over to scouts over this. I hate so much that they've "girlified" guides. It's the opposite of all it stood for- now girl= stereotype feminine. It's in the curriculum and badges too (bloody cake decorating instead of cooking) .

Scouts have been fantastic. Great selection of activities. Separate girls tent on camps.

BonfireLady · 25/05/2023 20:09

Yep, separate girls tents on camps when I was younger, and also now (my daughters are both scouts).

I am yet to see what happens in our local group if a boy who identifies as a girl joins. I'm assuming that this person will be put in to the girls' tent. Suffice to say I'll be passing on some feedback before that happens and asking a) if pregnancy has been added to the risk assessment and b) why all tents can't be mixed sex.

And I'll enjoy pointing out the misinterpretation of gender reassignment as a protected characteristic while I do.

And are the girls' rooms/tents available for use by transgirls i.e. males, if they wish to use them?

And does Leaders of the same sex mean that, or Leaders of the same gender?

This is the Scouts guidance on "supporting trans young people". There is virtually no mention of the effect on other young people who are not trans.

We did the same, Scouts has been brilliant, girls and boys doing actual fun activites like building fires, camping, rock climbing etc etc. And girls aka females have separate tents and fascilities.

In practice Guides is single sex. My dd has gone rainbows, brownies, guides. No males of any age at any point.

I think it is a shame not to have the opportunity for single sex extra curricular activities, which is why I sent her to guides not scouts.

Plasmodesmata · 25/05/2023 20:32

Guides have decided to sell off their residential activity centres so staying there will no longer be an issue.
