Women and girls who emphasize the specific needs of women born female and who call for and engage in discussions around the definitions of sex gender, and gender identity ... should ... be able to express themselves and their concerns on these issues in safety and in dignity.

I think I’ll send a copy of this to my MP.

nothingcomestonothing · 22/05/2023 16:18

Oh oh, can she tell Victor Madrigal-Borloz? I don't think he's up to speed on this

WallaceinAnderland · 22/05/2023 16:23

One to send to MPs ahead of the Equality Act discussion in Parliament on 12 June.

WarriorN · 22/05/2023 16:24

Absolutely!

I suppose there is as much squabbling over sex and gender at the UN as everywhere else. Can RS be sacked? I don't know how the UN works.

OneMorePlant · 22/05/2023 16:28

This is so fantastic !!!

A powerful statement. Now let's wait for the wails from those against free speech, against freedom of association for women and in favour of harassment & censorship.

Counting down ....

IwantToRetire · 22/05/2023 17:44

Had hoped this would be on FWR but had also hoped that the actual reason for the statement had been in the title, not just to attract comments from FWRs, but to alert public.

not sure the lure of a "statement" is going to be very strong :(

The title is:

Allow women and girls to speak on sex, gender and gender identity without intimidation or fear: UN expert

which hopefully to the world at large will mean something. Assuming it is ever seen or its intent made clear.

WarriorN · 22/05/2023 17:51

Apologies - can attempt to get changed?

I did think about title - wanted those who avoid fwr because we are bigots but claim to be feminists who want to campaign against violence against women and girls to see it.

But I see your point

For heaven's sake, the thread title is fine.

Thanks for starting the thread, WarriorN, and posting links to the statement - it makes for excellent reading. I think I’ll send a copy to my MP when I contact him about the June debate.

ArabeIIaScott · 22/05/2023 19:09

Good idea to send to MPs.

Twitter responses are predictable. Alsalem is accused of 'overt bigotry'.

The usual hyperbole.

PopGoesTheProsecco · 22/05/2023 19:16

Apologies for my ignorance. My knowledge of the workings of the UN are somewhat limited.

I obviously welcome this statement wholeheartedly - we should be able to debate these issues without being abused. But in practise, how much difference will this make?

Is this a game changer? I mean not with TRAs - but with organisations in society? How much clout does this statement have?
