"BOOM!

Statement by the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, Reem Alsalem.

ohchr.org/sites/default/…

It is unequivocal in condemning the silencing, harassment and failure to protect women and girls for raising questions about gender identity."

Fantastic news!

Given the two experts have very different views, how will this play out? Which one will be listened to I wonder?

In Scotland only Victor Madrigal-Borloz got listened to, mainly because he told the government what they wanted to hear, that there was going to be no problem at all for women and girls. He got to speak twice. Reem Alsalem only got to speak once and that was right at the last minute. If they'd paid attention to what she said then the Scottish government could have avoided one of their debacles.

Sturgeon called her "the person from the UN" if I remember rightly.

NecessaryScene · 22/05/2023 21:12

Textbook example of institutional capture.

Um, "woman's rapporteur dealing with women's rights" is someone doing their job.

Unlike, say, a formerly gay rights organisation supporting genderism over homosexuals...

She did, and RA put it in her Twitter bio. Grin

Women's rapporteur is supposed to be concerned with the rights of males who feel womanly. Keep up.

Well I think it can only help that the people pushing genderism or whatever they want to call it are posting the most ludicrous hyperbolic batshit out loud, on the account of a UN expert.

It's certainly going to throw some of the more unhinged assertions into the sunlight.

'women's rights are fascism' - that'll show 'em!

So let's celebrate it getting an airing.

😍😍😍

Also, for those wondering if this statement has an impact - you can gauge the importance of it directly by how vicious the backlash is.

It's a perfect object lesson.

UN expert in VAWG makes a statement about women being smeared, attacked and denigrated for speaking up on 'gender' issues.

And ...

Must say the TRAs do seem a teeny bit rattled.

They never fail to show their true selves and their true intentions.

An excellent statement.

My only gripe is her use of the confusing term "Global North", which counterintuitively does include Australia and NZ but at first glance appears to let them off the hook.

I think it's because every time they do a head tilt, their little brains clatter against the insides of their skulls.

Wonderful to see.

Remember when Baroness Faulkner released the statement about how it was not transphobic for women to discuss the areas where rights for other groups conflicted with theirs? And we breathed a little easier and discussions progressed because we were no longer in the cyclical ‘you are all hateful bigots’ accusations blocking any progress at all? This feels like a similar moment. Like there is permission now at UN level for discussions to progress.

Well, I hope so. At least she is a voice of sanity.
