Lib Dems drop Self ID as a policy - Another win !

The latest huge U-turn the Lib Dems have apparently dropped self ID for transgender people from their future policies according to Lib Voice for Women.

After the SNP disaster no-one is keen to talk about it openly. Other unlikely ideas still being backed though.

Meanwhile in Scotland the Scottish LibDem leader willie_rennie is backtracking like mad over the latest horrific crime which men dressing as women helped lay the ground for. Pity he vote for a self id bill with no safeguards.

A win for who? Women? Or the Lib Dem’s?

HirplesWithHaggis · 19/05/2023 01:35

The Scottish LibDem leader is no longer Willie Rennie. It's Alex "We did it for you, Beth" Cole-Hamilton.

Dwtes8 · 19/05/2023 01:39

It’s a win for the Lib Dem’s. They are known as the liars of British politics for a reason. They will continue to push this in the institutions quietly and then vote for it when elected because they believe in it and don’t care what their voters think. If they would sign personal pledges on tuition fees for the students then vote to treble them they will lie to women’s rights campaigners for sure.

CovetedAsFuck · 19/05/2023 01:40

It is grimly fascinating to watch them desperately flop about.

Glad they’ve dropped it but they can get to fuck I don’t trust them and am far from impressed

Absolutely. Don't believe a word they say - EVER. Persistently lie, will promise anything but never deliver. Rely on no-one ever checking upon their claims to have won XXX for local people, organised XXX, etc etc. No principles.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/05/2023 02:04

Brilliant. I'm so glad to see this disastrous shite die away. I think we will see political parties further distance themselves from TWAW "Be Kind" stance.

BettyFilous · 19/05/2023 06:43

It doesn’t matter if they’ve dropped self ID. They won’t win outright and would sell their granny to go into coalition. This time it would be with Labour, so self-ID regardless - but enabled by hoodwinked GC votes. No thank you! I haven’t forgotten Lynne Featherstone telling GC voters to eff off.

teawamutu · 19/05/2023 07:25

Share everyone's scepticism about trusting these useless, misogynist feckers.

However - if it's off their manifesto, hopefully won't be a condition of any coalition with Labour? Which means Labour less likely to revive it?

SunnyEgg · 19/05/2023 07:28

No way would I trust this kind of announcement

useless, misogynist feckers. sums it up

LizzieSiddal · 19/05/2023 07:36

Surely they won’t try it, we all saw what happened in Scotland. But I do agree that the Lib Dems are liars.

That Willie Rennie asking for a “proper debate”. What a bastard. Women have been asking for a debate for years but we were told to shut the fuck up bigotTERF/Nazis

They have no shame.

Whose slogan was "No Debate"? Which particular grouping? Eh, Willie?

NotHavingIt · 19/05/2023 07:57

That maybe for now.....but the Lib Dems are, by nature, the strangest bunch, and they absolutely do support self Id, even if they have put it on the back burner for reasons of political expediency.

LizzieSiddal · 19/05/2023 08:00

And the Lib Voices For Women tried to get a debate very recently, at their conference. That poor woman was shouted at and clapped over. And of course they were not allowed a debate.

Floisme · 19/05/2023 08:07

If this is correct then I welcome it. No, it doesn't make them any more trustworthy or pro women in my eyes - I saw in that tweet that Liberal Voice for Women weren't allowed to speak at the conference. However, if they're waking up to how unpopular self ID would be then I think that's promising, especially as it's quite possible they'll end up with a role in the next government.

We can't afford to drop our guard though, quite the opposite in fact. I don't think this is ever going to go away.

Hoardasurass · 19/05/2023 08:17

Wasn't it the lib dems who called women "non men"?

Floisme · 19/05/2023 08:22

I think that was the Greens

Ingenieur · 19/05/2023 08:22

They also mention looking to introduce an "X" option for gender on passports.

As far as I know, my passports have only ever recorded sex, so a move to gender would be just another example of the erasure of sex as a category.

It's so weaselly of them to pretend that it's only adding one more option.

Wimpod · 19/05/2023 08:25

Shame none of them ever replied to any emails we sent looking for some support, except to parrot the party line.

Even in the vote on allowing sexual assault victims to request same sex care, the majority of responses I got were from Tories and a few Labour.

Massively transparent attempt to reverse their self ID ferret. 😠

This

and pretty much what everyone else has said

User478 · 19/05/2023 08:48

I thought Layla Moran was going to look into everyone's eyes and tell them what gender their soul was? Then they can have an X on their passport.
If she starts on Monday she might be done by the time the libdems win an election.

zibzibara · 19/05/2023 08:49

I don't believe that they've dropped plans to introduce gender self-id, the responder just didn't mention it explicitly in this document.

Slothtoes · 19/05/2023 08:56

Great - OK then, let’s see this clearly written up in their manifestos and prominent in their campaigning then we’ll know they mean it.

But that would be insufficient without committing to all the other legal changes that are needed to protect women and children from the unofficial self ID that already happens.

To actually tackle that they would have to commit to reviewing the GRA with an intention to repeal it and also commit to updating the Equality Act in line with what Sex Matters is campaigning for. Plus various other things around data and also government policy for schools, prisons, sports etc. it’s all listed on here at length.no shortage of ideas and problems to tackle.

Over to you, Lib Dems. With less than a year to the next general election, no time to lose..

Kendodd · 19/05/2023 08:57

Good news.
I'd put money on Labour dropping self ID next.
It's a shame the Tories ever suggested self ID as policy and an even bigger shame they allowed (even encouraged) the whole trans shit show to take hold under them.

zibzibara · 19/05/2023 09:05

In a way, I'm glad the Tories tried to introduce gender self-id, because it ended up blowing this ideology wide open for everyone to see, and lead directly to the ongoing mass peaking we witness today. Not that this is what they intended, having been as captured as the rest of them, but a very useful side-effect.

zibzibara · 19/05/2023 09:17

I would like to suggest a possible compromise on gender self-id: anyone can acquire a GRC without restriction, but it confers no legal advantage over sex, can't be used as an official form of identity, and the entire list of GRCs issued, including each individual's sex, date of birth, any previous names and criminal convictions, is made public for transparency. No more hiding and lying.
