Continuation of Thread 4.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

But my question is, how have these maniacs gained so much influence? How are people not saying, well, you're obviously mad, so...

Boiledbeetle · 03/06/2023 11:53

I watched it again yesterday just because. It is fascinating to watch the RSOH ones prattle on about how wonderful it is then to get really annoyed when called out on their bullshit.

I have to wonder how they manage to remain so willfully ignorant. I mean they are supposedly intelligent people but the I wouldn't know I'm not a woman and the women's studies lecturer who just got more and more agitated, the elected official who ended the interview. The horrible slimy blue haired idiot shutting down conversations about Lupron.

They know the questions he's asking aren't unreasonable or horrible, or meant to trick. they are bog standard everyone actually knows the answer questions. yet instead of have a proper conversation as to why his stance is wrong and theirs right they just act like... well little kids and throw a strop.

It's bloody ridiculous this has all got so far That these professionals have done so much harm on so little scrutiny or research on what they are actually doing to children. its sick.

Good article here: thecritic.co.uk/The-meaninglessness-of-moderation/

Jo Bartosch write good.

Apparently, the quote is from our very own @TinselAngel Star

duc748 · 03/06/2023 13:51

Good piece, that.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 03/06/2023 14:40

It is, and I agree with every word.

duc748 · 03/06/2023 19:26

It's odd, isn't it, that we hear so little of trans-widowers? Where are the husbands whose 40 year-old wives suddenly decided they wanted to be blokes? Not saying it's never happened, but still.

tourdefrance · 03/06/2023 20:53

I seem to remember reading that the older ftm trans people are mostly lesbians, so more widows rather than widowers.

duc748 · 03/06/2023 21:05

I guess that makes sense. Still think the older ftm sector must be quite a small one. And a quieter one too, maybe.

It happens (Poppy Z Brite a semi-famous example). And rather than stay on out of a sense of duty to the relationship I presume these men leave a hole shaped like themselves in the wall like Wile E Coyote. On this I will say, good for them.

tourdefrance · 04/06/2023 09:06

'Sense of duty' is definitely a female socialisation thing!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 04/06/2023 22:32

Interesting that the law on conversion therapy seems to be specifically written to apply only in 1 direction.

I can't believe, but equally am not surprised, they managed to slip these things into law without the majority of people knowing

  • Affirming children’s gender identity has become mandated by law in Canada. This is the result of two recent pieces of Canadian legislation. The first is Bill C‑16, which was passed in June 2017. Bill C-16 added the words “gender identity or expression” to the Canadian Human Rights Act and to a section of our Criminal Code that targets hate speech. As a result, not affirming a person’s gender identity (using their chosen name and pronouns) may be considered an act of discrimination or even hate speech. The second is Bill C-4, a Criminal Code amendment banning “conversion therapy,” which is defined as “any service, practice or treatment designed to change a person’s sexual orientation to heterosexual, or gender identity to one that matches the sex assigned at birth.” Effectively, this means that school staff, therapists, doctors and even parents are not allowed to question a child’s gender identity, no matter the child’s age, comorbidities (depression, anxiety, ADHD) or other circumstances. Canadian mental health professionals have begun to fear the consequences of using other therapeutic approaches, such as exploratory psychotherapy, with transgender-identified children.

I guess it's a bit like Brexit in that we like to think that anyone who voted to leave was stupid but that's simplistic. A lot of very intelligent people voted to leave and maybe for some very stupid reasons. It's possible to be both intelligent and willfully stupid at the same time. Also, as with Brexit, there is a lot of money at the top without which this madness wouldn't have been able to get where it is now. TRAs often accuse us of being in bed with the extreme right, at the very least. They ignore the fact that while we might be in the same bedroom as some right-wingers, they are in bed and having actual full sex with some of the vilest people on this earth who just happen to have enough money to push something that profits them, the vile wealthy. The trans movement is not grassroots.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 05/06/2023 07:51

Exactly.

Another good article by Victoria Smith:

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 05/06/2023 08:54

That is good. Although I could have done without being sent down an Aquinas rabbit hole this early in the morning.

angelico53 · 05/06/2023 09:38

She completely nails it - why Walsh makes my skin crawl. His little wifey in the kitchen needing the big strong man to take the lid of a jar. Fuck off.

duc748 · 05/06/2023 11:06

That Canadian article, just awful. There must be parents like that all over the Western world. So anything done to oppose this barbarism can be condemned as hate speech? Maybe the UN is a hopeful avenue But the medical profession surely needs to take good look at itself. What happened to 'First, do no harm'?

duc748 · 05/06/2023 11:08

In lid/jar news, I am neither big nor strong, but I did have the idea once of transferring the Mole grips from the toolshed to the kitchen cabinet, and that has served me well.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 05/06/2023 11:27

Lakeland used to have (and probably still does) a very good range of things for opening jars etc - I have quite a selection, including one that helps do that awful pinch-and-twist thing needed for bleach bottles.

Whatever about Walsh (I'd never heard of him and don't feel he's a great addition to my life), I rather resented finding myself agreeing with Peterson, but really, replacing the word 'gender' with 'personality' might be useful for some of the bewildered young.

NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom · 05/06/2023 12:18

I find tipping the jar upside down on the counter top and popping the seal between jar and jar lid with a round ended knife is all that’s required.

I use my late Nan’s ye olde butter knives for this very purpose (never bought real butter in my life 😂)

I expect my Nan’s jar-opening-knives have already outlived various male relatives, and will likely outlive Matt Walsh too!

We have this thing for those rare occasions my OH is also unable to open a jar lid:

https://www.welcomemobility.co.uk/kitchen/openers/baby-boa-jar-opener.html

He has incredibly good grip strength, because of his decades working as a thatcher, but men generally far out-perform women in that regard. It’s supposed to be a good indicator of longevity, interestingly.

Baby Boa Jar Opener

A multi-purpose and adjustable device that can be used to open a variety of jars and bottles.

Oh wow, my Dad still has several of those butter knives, albeit some with broken handles - definitely baggsied them for when he dies. They’re older than I am!
