Trans hockey player injures teenage girl in Scotland

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 13/05/2023 09:46

Oli London has retweeted a Reduxx article and added:

The incident occurred at Monarch Hockey Club in Scotland where the male, who was described as being built like a ‘rugby player’, reportedly tackled a girl to the ground leaving her with neck, hip and arm injuries.
The game had to be halted while the injured girl was removed from the field.

The official guidance from Scottish Hockey (SH), the sport’s governing body, explicitly states that participation on teams should be based entirely on gender self-identification.
“Hockey is a non-contact sport and SH sanctions men’s, mixed and women’s hockey competitions; as such there are no evidenced safety concerns for any trans male or female wishing to take part in sanctioned hockey competitions, in training or friendly/recreational hockey.

Have any of them ever played hockey?
It seemed to me while playing it as a child that it was full of aggressive contact with sticks and hard balls.

Hockey is stonewalled to the eyeballs

it does actually have a mixed sex version which takes into account differences between the sexes but I assume playing mixed sex hockey wouldn’t be enough validation for the TW in this story

Badgeringabout · 13/05/2023 09:56

FFS. The SIZE of him.

Helleofabore · 13/05/2023 09:56

I agree that it seems ridiculous to declare that hockey is ‘non contact’. Even the best players can sometimes crash into others and may hit a ball high.

For those playing mixed sex hockey, is there a difference in rule’s between playing all female and mixed sex?

Badgeringabout · 13/05/2023 10:01

Also the power behind a male hitting the ball will be considerably more than a female. Someone will be killed and it will be a woman.

Yep. And a ball that pace will easily fatigue a female opponent with repetition and potentially cause injury just stopping it.

A non contact sport? That requires shin pads and mouth guards??

Chewbecca · 13/05/2023 10:05

It IS a non contact sport.
But sometimes players do collide and men tend to hit the ball harder than women.
Some women won't play mixed for the above reasons but are now being forced to.

Chewbecca · 13/05/2023 10:06

Shin pads and mouth guards are for protection against the ball, not other players.

AutumnCrow · 13/05/2023 10:14

I played hockey at school. In a competitive environment, I made it to the girls’ 1st XI, so I know a bit about it. We called it ‘running violently with weapons’.

And sticks!

TrashyPanda · 13/05/2023 10:22

It might officially be a “non-contact” sport, but any player knows that isn’t the full truth.

injuries from collisions etc are common.

why does this man need to validate himself by playing in a women’s team when there are mixed-sex teams? And why are his teammates condoning his actions?

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 13/05/2023 10:26

Ffs how many women need to be hurt before people actually understand biological men will never be women and should only play with the men.

334bu · 13/05/2023 10:26

I only played hockey once and never again. Non contact sport? Aye right!!!!

AutumnCrow · 13/05/2023 10:34

The ball is a weapon, the stick is a weapon, and the body is a weapon, including - accidentally oh but of course - feet for kicking, knees for kneeing, arms and hands for pushing and hitting, torso for slamming (easier for males than females), and heads for nutting.

In a 'tussle for the ball', violent contact can and does happen. If people find this 'sporting' they're fucking delusional.

If men aren't skilled enough at hockey to avoid violent contact with female players on the field then they shouldn't be playing. It's negligence on behalf of the hockey authorities and I hope they get sued.

ChateauMargaux · 13/05/2023 10:38

Regardless off the existance of mixed hockey, self identification into the female category is not compatible with competitive fairness and exclusion on the basis of sex is lawful, according to the guidance issued in September 2021 to all sporting bodies based on an extensive review of evidence and deeming existing guidance from 2014 to be out of date and no longer valid.

Please email Hockey Scotland, Monarchs Hockey Club and any other organisation you can think of... this guidance could not be clearer and the individual sporting organisations should be held to it.

It might be a non-contact sport but I managed to break someone's finger and I spent most of each match hiding and chatting to my mate.

I also recall someone going to hospital after being knocked unconscious.

Given we were teens with not much enthusiasm for it, the injury rate was pretty high.

zanahoria · 13/05/2023 10:40

Even if the contact is a foul, fouls happen all the time, some deliberate some not some inbetween.

PuttingDownRoots · 13/05/2023 10:44

I played Mixed Hockey at University. We (the female players) were considered maniacs by the Rugby team and far too scary!.

Basically a mixed hockey team has to be 5 men, 5 women and a GK either sex

penalty flicks have to be taken by a woman
and in a penalty corner first hot must be by a woman

the Game referenced above would most likely have had 2 female umpires. I wonder what they thought of it & also what the hockey insurers think of it….

elgreco · 13/05/2023 10:51

I've played hockey. Technically it's non contact but in reality it's not, people run into each when tackling and can hit each other accidentally on purpose.

KalimbaMoon · 13/05/2023 10:51

Hockey is brutal - as I recall from my schooldays.

Is it permitted for the women in the mixed team to be men?

I still have a scar on my knee from being hit by a stick in my school days, I maybe should have had stitches or something rather than Dad and a bowl of warm Dettol though. 😂

When at school I played against a future England player, playing against a male would have been a whole different level.

Women need to stop being forced too. Every woman needs to walk out onto the pitch, field or arena, line up for the start wait for the whistle then every single woman that is having to compete or play with these blokes needs to walk off. If this was done world wide every time the governing bodies would soon do the right thing.
