I'm not sure if he mentions his battles with GC women in it because the review doesn't mention it but I thought some people here would like to read the review. The reviewer doesn't think much of it and that is putting it mildly :)
"Bringing Down Goliath by Jolyon Maugham review — the pompous bloviating of a Twitter KC" (I had to google "bloviating"):

Bringing Down Goliath by Jolyon Maugham review — the pompous bloviating of a Twitter KC

The word “Twitter” appears but once in the index of Jolyon Maugham’s memoir cum social action manifesto Bringing Down Goliath. But the whole book is very much

Here’s Joly’s windmill, 3 mill on Rightmove, if anyone wants to take it off his hands.

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/70917429

It's not my taste at all. But it doesnt look like he lives in a windmill so much as adjacent to a windmill. Or on the grounds where a windmill is sited.

Is this where he bashed that poor fox to death on boxing day in his wife's kimono? Maybe that was London? Didnt the RSPCA get involved? Was there a conclusion? So many questions. Sorry.

Here’s Naomi Cunningham’s review of R M White’s book as a follow-up, because some things never get old.

That never wears thin, it's so biting!

MargotBamborough · 22/04/2023 11:46

Oh, that was brilliant.

Looking at his bio, yuan yi zhu is an academic. He’s not a full time reporter. Is maugham really suggesting that everyone who writes for the times is pro brexit, racist, transphobic etc? It’s such a petty response.

Apparently his most heinous crime is to be a Senior Research Fellow at Policy Exchange‘s Judicial Power Project.

"Im delighted to report that Owen Jones describes the book as "A mighty blast . . . This is how to challenge the powerful."

And this is why no one can take OJ seriously. He's a zealot. He doesn't understand that he doesn't have to support everything anyone says or does if they are on his 'team'. It's ok to sometimes say 'that's a bit shit, actually' when something is objectively shit. Or not say anything at all.

He says the most ridiculous things and defends the most heinous things just to be 'on the right side'. He has no credibility. Like Billy Bragg too. (I'm waiting for his glowing review too)

He also wrote a book of his own called "The Establishment".

Owen, you're a white man with a huge platform which you mostly use to abuse women who refuse to conform with a misogynistic belief system which has been accepted by all political parties, the civil service, the rest of the public sector, the third sector and the vast majority of large corporations.

You couldn't be much more establishment if you had a hereditary title.

Perfect! You've got to love her.

Ahahaha that review is so funny, and his reaction is making it even funnier. Arf indeed.

And here’s Jolyon admitting that he has used GLP funds for paying half the fees for employing a lawyer to fact check his vanity project.

Well that was an entertaining morning on twitter. Positively lit up the day. Thanks Jolyon!

What an enjoyable thread & article. Thanks to @ArabellaScott upthread I now have this song going round in my head - but the legendary Dusty sings it wonderfully I don't mind. Enjoy

Windmills Of Your Mind by Dusty Springfield

Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheelNever ending or beginning on an ever spinning reelLike a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival ...

Two roads in a wood diverged, and I -
Stuck on a kimono and bashed a fox.
Sorry, Basil, it's the road of hard knocks.

I find the parallel with the alive/dead binary remaining incredibly meaningful land important even where mistakes are possible and some cases are decided with legal intervention incredibly insightful.

To be totally honest I don’t think they’ve ever really lived in the windmill not the windmill-house, preferring their London home, which was where the fox met it’s grim demise.

I think the windmill house is superb, personally, but that’s due to the original architect and the refurb architect, nowt to do with Joly-on really.

I am annoyed by the sheer number of uncomfortable hard benches and settles in the property but otherwise it’s very tastefully decorated.

lifeissweet · 22/04/2023 12:36

He needs to stop and get off Twitter (although I'm enjoying his meltdown a little too much). He is provoking things like this:

twitter.com/naburkinshaw/status/1649721329065623552?s=46&t=3hZ1A3VvG4XfcQmxhSBpVQ

Maya exposing his patronising, lying, pompous correspondence.

It gets worse and worse

NotBadConsidering · 22/04/2023 12:38

Won’t someone other than Jolyon think of the roads?! They don’t ask to get laid down, they don’t get asked where they want to go, do they? They just get told “you’re going here” and they have to lump it. Then they get an endless stream of traffic rolling over them, spilling oil over them, leaving tyre marks.

And woe betide if they ever crumble under the pressure of it all and develop a pothole, watch the ungrateful bastards moan about the damage it does to their precious cars! It’s been millennia of relentless oppression ever since the days of the Roman Empire. Someone needs to stick up for the roads, and I for one am glad they’ve got an occasionally successful barrister on their side. Maybe one day, after a Twitter campaign to rope the gullible into a crowd funder or two, the roads will be set free, free to choose their own life.

Is the revenue from the book going to the GLP? I doubt people donated to the GLP to have it spent on researching and hosting events for JL's book

What would JL say if Boris had used no 10 staff to do research on a book he was writing during their downtime and then used Government money to pay for events to promote it

Nicked this from Shahrar Ali's tweet. Bloviating; like "an army of pompous phrases moving over the landscape in search of an idea." Grin

Gaspode 👏👏👏

SomeRolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl · 22/04/2023 12:45

The real crime of this book is not that its author is insufferable. It is not that he displays an ugly streak of meanness against anyone who disagrees with him. It is that it is unbearably boring.

That is the best book review I've read in ages.

More windmill stuff

Historic England

https://historicengland.org.uk/services-skills/education/educational-images/jack-windmill-clayton-4411

Jolyon pompously announces his purchase in the local paper, plans to spend half a million renovating it

https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/10503667

Actually spends over a million and is sued for another half million still owing

https://www.pressreader.com/uk/daily-express/20201112/281904480705454

The architectural firms presentation of the finished property

https://featherstoneyoung.com/project/jack-windmill/

From what I can tell they massively overspent and have never really lived in it, fairly typical of Jolly’s many many vanity projects. The only difference between this vanity project and the book vanity project is that he hired experts for the renovation rather than attempting to do it himself

RedToothBrush · 22/04/2023 12:49

When you talk about people over promoted and in a job way above their ability level, cos they can blag and are gloriously over confident and pushy, you have a picture of this knobber in your head.

It is impossible not to.

MoralOrLegal · 22/04/2023 12:53

Bar guidelines on professional behaviour:
Core Duty 5: You must not behave in a way which is likely to diminish the trust and confidence which the public places in you or in the profession.

Hmm.

Does he actually do any real law these days though?
