Loos 'cleaned by all genders'

Spotted by entrance to loos at Waterloo Station. My brief observations:

  1. Not 'by people of all genders', but 'by all genders'. Presumably, spectral genders swirl around the bowl.

  2. Not 'both genders' or 'different genders', but 'all genders'. Given the growing list, good luck with that.

  3. No punctuation. Could mean either 'don't be alarmed (that) these facilities are cleaned by all genders', or 'don't be alarmed (about anything in life) – these facilities are cleaned by all genders (so the world is a lovely place)'.

Loos 'cleaned by all genders'

What is it supposed to mean?

Loos have always been cleaned by men and mostly women, so there is no change there.

(Male cleaners wont be hanging around though and they put a sign up saying a man is in there cleaning)

Is the sign just saying to women to keep their mouths shut is they see blokes hanging around in the Ladies?

bellinisurge · 20/04/2023 10:40

More w@not nonsense. I appreciate a sign that tells me there are male and female cleaners likely to be there. Don't need this bullshit.

SallyLockheart · 20/04/2023 10:53

Does that include rapists per the SNP definition

MishyJDI · 20/04/2023 10:53

For the protection of women and girls no man should be allowed to clean a woman’s toilet. This needs to be made illegal. Then any man in the ladies can be swiftly identified and thrown out.

AmuseBish · 20/04/2023 10:57

I for one will complain if I don't see a cakegender cleaning there. I WAS PROMISED ALL GENDERS!

RoseslnTheHospital · 20/04/2023 11:08

What is great is that according to the website of "The Sidings" at Waterloo, they have a Changing Places toilet, which has a hoist and other facilities for changing/toileting physically disabled people who have carers.

They also seem to have separate male and female toilets, and to have separate babychange facilities.

It's a shame about this fairly pointless sign. I would hope that they would stick to the standard practice when male cleaners are present in female toilets, and display a sign to that effect for the duration. Women should be given the courtesy of being given enough information to make an informed choice.

I think so.
I do think they mean 'don't complain about men cleaners' rather than 'don't complain even if some weirdo bloke who's a member of the public is in there', but the 'don't be alarmed' thing sounds infuriatingly close to 'don't fuss', 'don't over-react' or 'don't get your knickers in a twist' – those patronising things that only ever seem to be said about women.
In public loos the signs I usually see say things like 'both male and female cleaners work in these toilets', which is just as informative, doesn't use the word 'gender' wrongly and doesn't suggest that a woman voicing an opinion is 'alarmed'.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/04/2023 11:18

All 72 genders presumably? It's going to give lightbulb jokes a run for their money.

GreatHairDay · 20/04/2023 11:23

Yes don't make a fuss if you see a male or a crossdresser in your toilets. Be good girls.

GreatHairDay · 20/04/2023 11:25

Put up with your discomfort and don't make a scene if you see a man in your spaces. We big bosses have decided that you must #bekind and careful not to hurt the male's feelings in your spaces so don't make a face or shout or protest. We have decided for you how you should feel and act about this.

Shelefttheweb · 20/04/2023 14:20

Could get a bit crowded

Ah yes, most important in Scotland.
I live here and currently hate it.

Tarantullah · 20/04/2023 15:33

I agree they should have used sex instead of gender, but it's not unusual for men to clean loos (including the women's)- separate issue to this sign perhaps.

OR...

We employ male cleaners who are just going about their business and getting on with their jobs. If this makes you uncomfortable feel free to hold it for a mo while they finish scrubbing the loo.
The sign massively over complicates matters and is badly written but it isn't uncommon to come across both sexes cleaning.

EsmaCannonball · 20/04/2023 16:24

Harpic's New Gender Fluid. That's what it means, right?

nilsmousehammer · 20/04/2023 16:40

If there is not a bifluid goliath gendered demi boi cleaner I am going to be cross. Especially on Tuesdays.

In reality, the sign should say that a male employee is currently cleaning the toilets, which permits women who cannot use mixed sex spaces an informed choice on whether to wait or go elsewhere. Which is the point. Since inclusion is not a trans male only thing.

Should the male employee wank noisily in a cubicle, wave around a sword with which to punish any female who dares to breathe too loudly, stuff used tampons up his bum, take selfies of self with females (breathless thrills) or try to have pyjama parties/hand out tampons/instigate pillow fights or otherwise make a complete arse of themselves, there is at least an employer to point out that this person should not be in this role or sent into this space.

👏

nepeta · 20/04/2023 18:36

'All genders' is meaningless in that context. Like saying that the cleaners will all have different hairstyles. Who cares?

Actually, this thread shows that if biological sex actually would be erased from all language the concept of 'gender' would be superfluous. But things would be worse for women as sexism would not be erased, only our ability to clearly talk about whom it affects.

TomeTome · 20/04/2023 18:44

I don’t give a tick what gender you think you are just stick a sign up saying if there’s a male cleaner in there AND how long they’re going to be. So I can choose if I want to use the facilities. Please fill up the soap dispenser and make sure the basin plug is not blocked and if at all possible shoot the hand dryer.

While you are thinking about extra facilities could we think about female carers who care for males over the age of 6. We need to piss sometimes. Ta

YouJustDoYou · 20/04/2023 19:03

Well of course it says that, I mean if they said male/female then the fairy unicorn non-binary trans cats would be in uproad that they'd been left out, wouldn't they?

YouJustDoYou · 20/04/2023 19:04

I just want to know if there'll be penis in there, because then I can know to avoid.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 20/04/2023 23:39

I wonder if this needs to be moved to pedants corner I'm feeling all sorts of feelings but they're actually much more grammar related.

Male cleaners in the ladies are not ideal but also not new.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 21/04/2023 00:19

At once? Gosh it could get crowded.
