Loos 'cleaned by all genders'

Spotted by entrance to loos at Waterloo Station. My brief observations:

  1. Not 'by people of all genders', but 'by all genders'. Presumably, spectral genders swirl around the bowl.

  2. Not 'both genders' or 'different genders', but 'all genders'. Given the growing list, good luck with that.

  3. No punctuation. Could mean either 'don't be alarmed (that) these facilities are cleaned by all genders', or 'don't be alarmed (about anything in life) – these facilities are cleaned by all genders (so the world is a lovely place)'.

For the protection of women and girls no man should be allowed to clean a woman’s toilet. This needs to be made illegal. Then any man in the ladies can be swiftly identified and thrown out.

Great, go be a toilet cleaner then to bulk up the workforce so men aren't needed. What a batshit comment, nothing wrong with a man cleaning a toilet, it's always been a thing and there's always a sign to say it's taking place! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Good point there

ApocalipstickNow · 22/04/2023 09:07

Thing is Mishy toilets usually put up a sign to say there’s a male cleaner in, so women are aware and can decide if they want to wait or go elsewhere, are you suggesting transwomen/nb males put up a sign to say they’re in there? A tad outing, no?

KittenKong · 22/04/2023 09:22

So any tourist passing through who doesn’t have great English will be thinking ‘what the heck is that?’

KitKatLove · 22/04/2023 09:52

Is the sign the issue or the member of staff cleaning?

spirit20 · 22/04/2023 15:22

Some of the posters on here need their heads examined saying that male cleaners shouldn't have the 'right' to clean women's toilets. Without wanting to insult anyone in the cleaning profession (and sorry if I do) but I think it's reasonably safe to assume that cleaning toilets in a train station is no-one's dream job and any man cleaning a women's bathroom isn't going to feel 'privileged for doing so. They're already doing a manual job in what are probably not amazing conditions, and they don't need to be hassled in their job by some entitled well-off women complaining about them earning a living as best they can.

They're a free public service. If you don't want to use toilets cleaned by a male cleaner, then either don't use toilets elsewhere or bring your own female cleaner around with you at all times so she can clean whatever facilities you're about to use.

Seriously, there are lots of wealthy, privileged men out there doing harm to women, maybe focus your energy on criticising them rather than minimum wage workers.

KittenKong · 22/04/2023 17:10

Free? Station loos are usually not free.

DemiColon · 22/04/2023 17:21

My gut feeling reading a sign like this is just that they are trying to say there may be men or women cleaners, please be aware. And whoever wrote the sign is not all that up on the gradations of meaning around the word gender.

DemiColon · 22/04/2023 17:23

And I'll add that in most public toilets I've seen, whoever is the cleaner does both sets and they usually put up a sign saying there is a male or female cleaner when doing the opposite-sex loos. I really have no issue with that, and I've seen the cleaner step put when someone couldn't wait to use the toilets.

greenwaterbottle12 · 22/04/2023 17:24

I've cleaned train station toilets. The sign said cleaned by male and female cleaners.

Many times I've gone into the men's and older men have got very angry that I was in there. They told me it was wrong and I should leave.

My male co workers hated going in the female loos to clean. If we were on together the men would clean the men's and I'd clean the women's. However, it was mostly just one of us.

Hooray for Clapham Junction. Showing it's possible:

• With coherent English
• Without incoherent 'all gender' silliness

@PotteringPondering interesting hobby taking photos of signs regarding the staff that may or may not be cleaning the public toilets of the UK. Do you complain and/or compliment the business responsible for the conveniences or do you just post your pictures on here? If you do contact them what response have you received?

Somerset House, London, welcomes any old Tom, Dick or Harry.

This is much better.

That takes it to the next level.

Chersfrozenface · 26/04/2023 00:26

In normal English that would mean that all members of the gender team check the toilets.

If it's a big team, it could get very crowded.

Not sure what the purpose of a gender team would be, but it does sound very, er, contemporary.

Very well said 👏 👏👏👏
