Loos 'cleaned by all genders'

PotteringPondering · 20/04/2023 10:25

Spotted by entrance to loos at Waterloo Station. My brief observations:

  1. Not 'by people of all genders', but 'by all genders'. Presumably, spectral genders swirl around the bowl.

  2. Not 'both genders' or 'different genders', but 'all genders'. Given the growing list, good luck with that.

  3. No punctuation. Could mean either 'don't be alarmed (that) these facilities are cleaned by all genders', or 'don't be alarmed (about anything in life) – these facilities are cleaned by all genders (so the world is a lovely place)'.

I for one will complain if I don't see a cakegender cleaning there. I WAS PROMISED ALL GENDERS!

Seconded.

OP, I see your sign and I raise you "cleaned by all gender team members." Confused

Manchester Victoria railway station.

As long as the toilets are clean I don’t care who does the job.

You're very lucky.

Wouldn't it be lovely if we lived in a world where all females were as lucky as you?

Well if you have witnessed all these that you mention in your local convenience

the male employee wank noisily in a cubicle, wave around a sword with which to punish any female who dares to breathe too loudly, stuff used tampons up his bum, take selfies of self with females (breathless thrills) or try to have pyjama parties/hand out tampons/instigate pillow fights or otherwise make a complete arse of themselves

then yes I guess I am lucky to have avoided it.

nilsmousehammer · 21/04/2023 14:24

Unfortunately all are incidents women have had to deal with - those being the women who can use a mixed sex space. Many have just had to stop going in there. Inclusion needs to apply to them too.

DiscoBeat · 21/04/2023 14:57

What a lot of fuss. You know what they meant.

I don’t think that’s going to be very clean.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 21/04/2023 16:36

For the protection of women and girls no man should be allowed to clean a woman’s toilet. This needs to be made illegal. No, let's not go back to making cleaning toilets women's work.

Deathbyfluffy · 21/04/2023 16:37

MishyJDI · 20/04/2023 10:53

For the protection of women and girls no man should be allowed to clean a woman’s toilet. This needs to be made illegal. Then any man in the ladies can be swiftly identified and thrown out.

It's fairly easy to identify a cleaner - they usually have cleaning things with them.
It's unreasonable to expect small businesses to employ two cleaners, one female and one male (remember, equality means the men's loo will also need a men's cleaner) - so any law would get nowhere near being passed.

I get the point of your post, but it's just not practical.

This. Whenever I see a male cleaner I always object. Usually they say something like 'no-one else can get in', which is bs. Allowing male clearners to clean women's lavatories allows ANY man in - all he needs is dark trousers and a lanyard. My DH hates that women clean male toilets, too, he says it is undignified for the women and the men. Opposite sex cleaners need to be illegal.

What is great is that according to the website of "The Sidings" at Waterloo, they have a Changing Places toilet, which has a hoist and other facilities for changing/toileting physically disabled people who have carers.

They also seem to have separate male and female toilets, and to have separate babychange facilities.

It's a shame about this fairly pointless sign. I would hope that they would stick to the standard practice when male cleaners are present in female toilets, and display a sign to that effect for the duration. Women should be given the courtesy of being given enough information to make an informed choice.

When bursting for a pee choice is generally not an option. No male cleaners is better.

RoseslnTheHospital · 21/04/2023 16:54

Of course it may not be possible to wait or find an alternative, but better to be forewarned at least and to be aware that someone is actively present cleaning.

Grammarnut · 21/04/2023 16:47

And for some women no mixed space is an option.

Imagine bursting for a pee, seeing that sign and knowing it's a disabled loo if you're lucky, or you're searching for the next nearest one while trying to hold on.

This is about the women not sufficiently privileged to be able to make a choice. If there's a male in there they cannot go in . These women need access to the world too. At least an employee is going to be there briefly, and tell you that they are there.

DiscoBeat · 21/04/2023 14:57

What a lot of fuss. You know what they meant.

That's not the point, and there is a 'fuss' for two good reasons:

  1. As other posters have pointed out, there are some women who can't use mixed sex public loos and therefore the messaging on this needs to be clear (and I think women need to have access to single-sex spaces).

  2. The signs (mine and the OP's) both demonstrate the pernicious misuse of the word gender, and the ridiculous lengths people will go to to avoid saying sex, even if this is what they mean.

If only male cleaners are available to clean the women's loos, the sign could simply be: "Male cleaner in attendance."

thatsn0tmyname · 21/04/2023 18:20

If 78 people are cleaning that loo, it'll need to be located in a pretty big cubicle.

JanesLittleGirl · 21/04/2023 18:56

thatsn0tmyname · 21/04/2023 18:20

If 78 people are cleaning that loo, it'll need to be located in a pretty big cubicle.

And an actual male cleaner would be leaning on a mop, watching an actual female cleaner doing the work while telling her where she was going wrong.

RocketIceLollie · 21/04/2023 19:11

With the problem of attracting employees generally, let alone cleaning public loos, I guess it's a case of whoever they get to do the job.

Am I the only one who always feel guilty using a loo that the cleaner has just cleaned when the cleaner is in the room?

I admit defeat – that's even less coherent than mine at Waterloo:

• These toilets are cleaned by all members of the gender team?
• These toilets are cleaned by team members, each of whom is all genders?
• These toilets are cleaned by team members, who between them represent all genders?
• These toilets are cleaned by the willies of members of the gender team?

No wonder my toilet is so dirty. My house is certified gender free.

MotherofPearl · 21/04/2023 21:47

@PotteringPondering

It made me think of 'all butter' pastry or something like that. This cleaning team is an 'all gender' team, like it's a special designated thing.

''@MishyJDI · 20/04/2023 10:53

Completely agree.

There was a male cleaner cleaning the cubicle next to mine when I last used public loos (train station) and it made me feel so uncomfortable.

As a victim of sexual assault that anxiety not something I can control or get past: I simply don't want men anywhere near things like public loos or changing rooms in swimming pools/shops.
