This is the case where Mermaids challenged the Charity Commission's decision to give charitable status to the LGBA.

Don't have any more detail at the moment, but thought you'd all be interested. It's been a four month wait already.

I can't find the original post because - as shocking as it will be to hear - he has blocked me.

Was Bundles involved in this one, or am I mixing up my court cases?

I thought bundles was the GCC one..?

Wasn't Bundles in the appropriately named Rainbow House with Zippy and George?!

More seriously, it was Allison Bailey's tribunal case (and apparently RMW wasn't responsible for the bundles or bungles.)

lifeissweet · 19/04/2023 22:01

Yes. The bad bundle was GCC - as was the emotional support Mother and the emotional support dog.

LGBA was John Nicholson's staggeringly arrogant testimony.

LipbalmOrKnickers · 20/04/2023 00:35

Must be nearly judgement o'clock now - keep getting butterflies every time I see this thread has new posts (apologies!)

TheBiologyStupid · 20/04/2023 00:38

Both of those links worked (and archived now), WhiteFire. Thanks

I cant get over the embarrassing level of desperation required to determinedly leverage the sexual orientation of the LBG Alliance when the whole point of mermaids is to deny that sexual orientation even exists!

They're actually using the vehemently challenged premise of their opposition, to uphold their own position 🤣

As the bottom of barrels go, it doesn't get more scraped.

Almost as mind bendingly desperate as the opinion piece I saw the other day, saying it's positively dangerous to sex segregate toilets, as if trans men use the ladies then biological men could use that as subterfuge to get in and assault women. WTAF?!

pickledandpuzzled · 20/04/2023 12:11

That was a classic moment, Granny.

It's mind boggling the drivel that rattled off some keyboards.

WeeBisom · 20/04/2023 12:29

So presumably because the attendees are dressed normally and some are older, Owen Jones thinks they’re not gay, lesbian or bisexual? Incredible he thinks it’s “obvious” they are straight when he can’t even tell the sex of human beings.

Which was something that was only obvious to LOJ, as he was met with a lot of silence, baffled tweets and the odd 'are you saying they're all old?' 'Are you saying they're all
White?' What are you seeing that we're not, Owen?'

Hence the explanation, which also didn't shed any light on what we were all supposed to be noticing in this picture.

One can only surmise that, yes, it was the absence of blue hair and drag that made this LGB audience 'unrepresentative'

Own goal.

Tallisker · 20/04/2023 13:32

I can't bear the suspense

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 20/04/2023 14:01

When I watched the LGBA conference on YouTube what struck me first was "look at all the women!"

The charity status of LGB-Alliance was opposed by over 50 LGBT orgs IIRC?

It's not just Mermaids.

And why would they oppose it? What is wrong with a charity focusing on LGB only? Do you disavow every other single issue charity?

It's beyond time that the T learnt and accepted that not everything is about them and nor should they be included in everything.

Oh happy days the GCC tribunal

"That is new information!"

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 20/04/2023 16:10

These little organsations talk to each other and influence each other. They form a community, meet at conferences, even swap staff. They share ideology. Many such orgs listened to Mermaids (goodness knows why) and to Stonewall (more understandable even if only for historic reasons)

LGBA are a challenge to that ideology. So yes, these orgs opposed LGBA.

Though that may change. Some of these litle organisations might be wondering if they need to look up what "safeguarding" means for LGBT youth, now that LGBA have highlighted the need for it through their charitable objectives as presented in court. (Mermaids also highlighted the need for safeguarding but they did it by counter-example).

nilsmousehammer · 20/04/2023 16:35

Quite. That charity sector is a phenomenally incestuous group in that the employment pool is the same group of people who periodically all swap jobs, and they reflect the very serious problem of total lack of diversity of political thinking. They have driven out anyone who is not 'one of them' creating an echo chamber without anyone left who does not think and do as prescribed by RightThink, and enforcing values and shunning of diverse others is a part of the culture. No critical thinking or questioning permitted.

Political capture achieved - total loss of any connection to reality, total lack of representation of anyone outside the bubble with the charities largely serving their own interests and job sustainability. Lack of relevancy and collapse to follow.

It's not just Mermaids.

No only Mermaids opposed them in court. What other organisations twittered between themselves is irrelevant as none of them were prepared to stand up in court to explain their position, or put their money on the line.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 21/04/2023 09:46

Is anything happening today? Just seen LGB Alliance share a post alluding to the tribunal and wondered if that meant a decision is incoming.

Will it be on paper - or is there something for us to log into?

WeeBisom · 21/04/2023 10:00

Counsel on both sides get the judgment a few days in advance to check for any factual errors etc. It’s secret at this point and can’t be released. Then it’s handed back to the judge who does a final read over. There will then be a written version published online, and that’s when the judgment is handed down. They are usually in pdf form so you’ll be able to read it.
