This is the case where Mermaids challenged the Charity Commission's decision to give charitable status to the LGBA.

Don't have any more detail at the moment, but thought you'd all be interested. It's been a four month wait already.

The charity status of LGB-Alliance was opposed by over 50 LGBT orgs IIRC?

It's not just Mermaids.

So?

The head of the LGBT Consortium, which represents over 300 LGBT charities in the UK, why does the UK need over 300 LGBT charities? stated during the tribunal that they consider any group which is for LGB people and not for T people inherently transphobic.

Apparently the differing opinions of LGB people on this matter are not important.

The point is, it's easy to find LGBT organisations which seem to focus solely on the T and don't think the LGB should be allowed to self-organise without the T. It's not easy to find organisations solely for LGB, i.e. same sex attracted people. The LBG Alliance is in fact the only one.

It seems to me that the LGB Alliance is therefore vitally important, but we probably don't need 300+ LGBT organisations which all hold the same set of beliefs and don't tolerate any dissent (specifically the belief that homosexuality is same sex attraction, not same gender attraction).

Slightly off topic, but connected, isn't it interesting to see lies all over the place and how easily led some people are.

soddingspiderseason · 18/04/2023 12:48

Even if the court ruling goes the wrong way, surely LGBA can just identify as a charity? Reality after all, is now completely subjective, and how you identify is more important than material reality? LGB charities are charities. No debate etc etc.

CampervanKween · 18/04/2023 12:50

If they win their court case, do Mermaids have to pay the legal costs? Seems really unfair all these poor people having to raise funds to defend themselves like this.

If there is 1 single trans only charity, then an LGB charity should be allowed.

How many trans charities are there?
A simple Google reveals there's many many many more than just 1. Almost like it's a huge money making grift..

This has been the most maddening thing. They protest and fight all the work the LGBA try to do. Cut off funding streams by putting pressure on donors, wrap them up in legal tape...

...and then crow that 'what have the LGBA actually done? Nothing!'

I will speak to our work accountant today. We have a charity account which I get the say on where it goes. Will donate now to compensate them.

Nice!

MrsJamin · 18/04/2023 13:17

The LGB Alliance had the audacity to question the concept of a singular "LGBT community" - that's what people didn't like. I still don't understand why being gay automatically makes you part of "a community", because then people in that "community" can judge others in "the community" for doing the wrong thing. Good on LGBA for saying "there is no community"!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 18/04/2023 13:26

I'm also interested in hearing about the investigation of the children's charity Mermaids who employed a known paedophile advocate and another adult who posted pornographic photos of his genitals online while being employed to work with children and talk to them about changing sex.

Or has that been hushed up?

It's not just Mermaids.

Where you have ideological disagreement, also disagreement over something like medical issues, and it's stuff that is hotly disputed in society, I don't think it's for the Charity Commission to take sides on it and rule which side "has the truth" and is "doing good for society".

Rather, you can tolerate different charities with different perspectives. There is a good for society in allowing that.

MissPollysFitDolly · 18/04/2023 13:42

Following, very interested, can't see how it can go other than in LGBA's favour.

The dishonesty is a feature, not a bug.

For general info, it's worth accessing the transcript if you're unsure what happened, or if people are claiming things happened that didn't - here

There were also several threads while the case was ongoing- starting here

Would be good if old arguments from previous threads weren't rehashed, although I fear it is a bit inevitable...

Lols. Isn't the LGB alliance, mostly full of straight people membership?

Shall indeed be an interesting decision. Many suggest they are not what they seem, but I doubt that will be provable at the tribunal.

The opposite surely. Since other organisations added the TQ++++they are stuffed full of all sorts of opposite sex attracted queers, en-bees, etc.

LGB is for same she attracted people. It is unclear why people like you feel they should not have their own organisation.

Lol, given you think Juno Dawson's 'straight', and Eddie Izzard is a lesbian, that's most amusing.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 18/04/2023 14:37

Men who call themselves lesbians are heterosexual though. Because regardless of any imagined gender, they still remain a male who is sexually attracted to females.

Pretty sure it's Stonewall that's full of straights now. Ones desperate to be interesting by declaring themselves "queer" and/or through creating new, indecipherable terms by glomming the Q-word to the front of any old thing, to be more specific.
