According to the ONS.

https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/why-does-the-census-say-there-are-more-trans-people-in-newham-than-brighton/

"Did you realise that one in every 67 Muslims is transgender? That adults with no educational qualifications are almost twice as likely to identify as transgender as university graduates? That the London boroughs of Brent and Newham are home to higher proportions of transgender people than Brighton and Oxford? These are some of the astonishing results from the 2021 census of England and Wales, which was the first in the world to ask about gender identity."

Why does the census say there are more trans people in Newham than Brighton?

We’ve been wanging on about this for ages!

plain language is SO important- both for those who speak English as an additional language and those with low literacy due to SEN and/or missed education.

recently I learned that people often rely on their children to translate so health related materials really need to be aimed at approx average 8 year olds literacy standards.

‘does your gender identity match your sex assigned at birth?’ is as meaningless to many as ‘cervix haver’ is.

So glad we have Biggs and Sullivan keeping an eye on this.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 09/04/2023 10:11

Deary me, lies, damned lies and statistics indeed.

InvisibleDragon · 09/04/2023 10:13

Oh wow, what a mess!

JustSpeculation · 09/04/2023 10:18

I have a vague memory of answering "no" to this question, as I don't consider myself as having a gender identity. I can't recall if there was an opportunity to explain this.

Tinysoxx · 09/04/2023 10:20

Another good example of why Starmer should be paying attention to this.

EmotionalSupportHyena · 09/04/2023 10:23

Kinda chuckling that Brent, whose MP went on telly to say children were born without a sex, is one of the two name checked London boroughs.

This would be comedy if it wasn't so sad

Just to make clear to people who haven't followed this (like me) the article is discussing the data collection and questions asked. Very interesting.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 09/04/2023 10:35

The data from the census is meant to be accurate. It's designed to accurately capture society and provide a baseline for future planning. The capture of the ONS by the trans lobby is a fucking embarrassment. Predictably the communities affected by having incoherent data are the genuinely marginalised & poor, those with English as a 2nd language. Disadvantaged by these narcissistic groups wreaking havoc on society.

BettyFilous · 09/04/2023 10:37

The last paragraph is sobering, that the census gender questions have been adopted more widely in public funded surveys.

For those who haven’t read it, it’s about respondents’ comprehension of English, the relative complexity of the gender questions and the correlation (in the results) between populations with lower English language skills reporting higher rates of transgender identity, higher than areas like Brighton. Local authorities will be pressed to spend more on supporting trans populations that are likely be the result of over-reporting due to lower English language comprehension in those areas.

Anyone new to the topic who is interested in learning more about the problems in data capture should look up Alice Sullivan.

I’ll dig up some more links but basically, terves warned against this and Alice is the Grand High Terf of Professional Data Collection (and I mean that as a very big compliment)

The strongest predictor of the transgender population across 331 local authorities, as measured by the census, is the proportion of people whose main language is not English.

Women on here predicted, over and over, that the mangling of language will most affect those for whom English is a second language.

I hope those who were captured are held accountable for this absolute shit show of false statistics.

My initial reaction to that headline was that Muslim and fundamentalist Christian denominations like those found in Brent would be more likely to "trans away the gay" but the issue of language and data collection questions is fascinating.

DarkDayforMN · 09/04/2023 10:50

I wonder how long until TRAs read this article and start using the dodgy data to support their claims that the trans population is “the most marginalised?”

Also wondering: if TW were overcounted by the census, what the true denominator should be in that infamous imprisoned TW sex offender:TW population ratio.

SmartHome · 09/04/2023 10:52

It was obvious that was going to happen from the way they phrased the questions.

I thought the same, but the Spectator article explains the reported rates of trans in those populations outstrips even Brighton & Hove and other trans-friendly areas which seems unlikely.

EmotionalSupportHyena · 09/04/2023 10:56

It’s Stonewall preferred policy in action again - claim that transgender people are most vulnerable people in all of society, end up shitting on people who are genuinely marginalised by inability to participate in the public discourse due to language difficulties.

I change name often on here for no reason except personal entertainment but some of you may recall that a lot of my stepdaughter’s gender issues were compounded by the school’s use of highfalutin Queer Theory inspired terminology and her mum speaking English as a THIRD language. Her mum’s confusion (you can’t even check this stuff in a dictionary because the meaning of words keeps slipping) was then weaponised against her as evidence of her importing homophobia from her country of origin!

School is a Bronze Stonewall Champion 😬

thegrain · 09/04/2023 10:57

I hope no one blindly follows the data and makes decisions based on it or that's going to waste money.

Bláthannabuí · 09/04/2023 10:58

First we have science now statistical data.. How will this be twisted & shut down by the TRA army🤔

Yes, me too.

Ask people 'do you identify as transsexual?' and you'd get a different number.

As well as:
'would you like to be in prison with a lot of other men, or would you like to be in a prison with women?'

Does it translate that people who have a harder time fitting in and succeeding in our traditional institutions find it so stressful that they doubt themselves and who they are perhaps?
