According to the ONS.

https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/why-does-the-census-say-there-are-more-trans-people-in-newham-than-brighton/

"Did you realise that one in every 67 Muslims is transgender? That adults with no educational qualifications are almost twice as likely to identify as transgender as university graduates? That the London boroughs of Brent and Newham are home to higher proportions of transgender people than Brighton and Oxford? These are some of the astonishing results from the 2021 census of England and Wales, which was the first in the world to ask about gender identity."

Why does the census say there are more trans people in Newham than Brighton?

Excellent article, and entirely "No Shit, Sherlock!" to those of us know actually bloody well live amongst friends and family who have limited English proficiency and/or educational attainment. But I expect, an astonishing result to the supremely privileged, luxury beliefs-steeped Right Side Of History folk.

I think there may quite a few people with a warped sense of humour.

Just tried putting “does your gender identity match your birth sex?” Through google translate into another language then back to English. I got the following outcomes for different languages - the first two were the most common:

Does your gender match your birth gender?
Does your gender identity match your birth gender?
Does your gender match where you were born?
Does your gender identity match your birth date?
Does your gender identity match your gender by birth?
Does your gender match?
Is your gender identity male or female at birth?
Does your identity match your gender?
Is your gender identity the same as your birth partner?
Is your gender identity the same as your penis?

That was inspired, and makes it very clear that lots of people are likely to have been very confused.
Last one is hilarious 😂

It should ask “is your gender identity located in your penis?”

Foreversearch · 09/04/2023 19:15

I am not surprised by this, TRAs do not want accurate data collection as it potentially undermines their arguments. I suspect there was an element of rebelling and TW stating female for sex.

It shows why the NHS removing the words women and girls from medical conditions and symptoms is such a bad idea. As has been said time and again, it will impact women who have English as a second language and those with poor comprehension.

I had always hoped the census would give us stats that can be used to fight for single sex spaces. For example, It’s hard to justify making all toilets in a building unisex if only 0.2% of the population are transgender.

I am disappointed as the census results are being released they are showing such contradictory information.

I have always had respect for the ONS, this has disappointed me but more importantly has worrying implications for everyone.

Laladybird · 09/04/2023 19:33

Wow I always thought the ONS was gold standard data. That Alice Sullivan article reveals them to be ideological nutters with little interest in useful statistics.

Has anyone organised a complaint about this? I would like to write to my MP but these things need to be coordinated before politicians will take notice. What would the call to action be? Could the census sex and gender data get struck off?

I realised I hadn’t used the same question so had another go with Is the gender you identify with the same as your sex registered at birth?.

My favourite translation was Hawaiian:
Is the man you saw the same as your husband at birth?

sashagabadon · 09/04/2023 20:55

Shows what a ridiculous question it was. I thought the ONS was gold standard and the envy of the world?

Shelefttheweb · 09/04/2023 20:57

Scotland was the same. I think their testing was “We asked Stonewall, Engender and LBGT Youth”

The data from the census is meant to be accurate. It's designed to accurately capture society and provide a baseline for future planning. The capture of the ONS by the trans lobby is a fucking embarrassment. Predictably the communities affected by having incoherent data are the genuinely marginalised & poor, those with English as a 2nd language. Disadvantaged by these narcissistic groups wreaking havoc on society.

So an area with a high Muslim population and low English literacy will have to prioritise trans gender welcoming facilities to an area where single sex provision is both most needed and culturally essential.

And this will inevitably impact on the provision of services for non English speakers.

All because the word salad pricks can't comprehend that not everyone went to fucking university in the UK.

The privileged fuckwittery of this is too appalling for words.

Data collection needs to be kept simple. Plain English is hugely important otherwise the most vulnerable groups in society are discriminated against...

The descent of the ONS into discriminatory statistical incoherence may be partly explained by the presence of a senior individual with a vested interest and presumably with considerable influence?

This thread about Nancy Kelley raving about all the trans people in Newham because the population in Newham is so young would be interesting to look further into.

Something tells me, there's going to also be an abnormally high number of 'older trans people' despite the area's demographic and despite the statistics everywhere else.

RayonSunrise · 09/04/2023 22:20

Fireyflies · 09/04/2023 20:55

They do do a lot of question testing in advance of the census. Details of the sex and gender questions here https://www.ons.gov.uk/census/censustransformationprogramme/questiondevelopment/sexandgenderidentityquestiondevelopmentforcensus2021#:~:text=Is%20the%20gender%20you%20identify,your%20sex%20registered%20at%20birth%3F&text=The%20gender%20identity%20question%20is,aged%2016%20years%20and%20over.

It does sound as if most of the testing was with the trans and non binary community rather than a cross section to include those who don't feel that they have a gender identity, aren't familiar with the entire trans context, or don't have good English language.

That has been a problem in gov for some time. There has been a big push for inclusion in research recruiting, but only to make sure there are minorities involved with testing "universal" services. Getting a cross section to test services designed with minorities in mind even if everyone will need to access them, not so much. I think that only started to change with Covid, when it became clear that men were having worse cases than women were so there was no point in being fluffy about sex/gender.

literalviolence · 09/04/2023 22:44

ZirihePevzig · 09/04/2023 16:49

Everything the census says about trans is unreliable and meaningless because of the nonsense questions asked, which assumed that everyone has a faith in magic pixie-dust gender identity, which is a false assumption.

I declared on the census that I don't have a gender identity that matches my sex at birth, explaining further that I have no gender identity whatsoever given that gender is the means by which sexist stereotypes are upheld. I expect that means I am counted under the "trans" umbrella by census statistics despite not being trans, but the only alternative would be to claim that yes I have a female gender identity which would have been a lie. It's a total nonsense.

Me too. I'm not going to pretend I have a gender identity.

NotBadConsidering · 09/04/2023 23:15

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 09/04/2023 15:56

Could a few be teenagers who have got caught up in the social contagion and will grow out of it before long? Just in the same way that Covid or chicken pox is easily spread across different cultures?

Certainly in a secondary school near me teenagers who claim to be bi/trans/rodents are two a penny at the moment. In my day it was punk and we mostly grew out of that too thankfully.

Even if it’s just for over 16s, the question is what’s the likelihood there’s more social contagion in Newham compared to Brighton? It’s incredibly unlikely surely, so can’t be the reason.

mumda · 09/04/2023 23:51

A barrister recently suggested to me that the questions they ask in the census are good quality. I will be emailing them the article tomorrow morning!

EnfysPreseli · 10/04/2023 00:35

Some of those who completed the census in Wales would have used the Welsh language forms. I think an even smaller percentage of those people would be familiar with the terminology. I was thinking of younger relatives helping a person with limited English complete it. The question used is probably tough to translate. Maybe it would get summarised to 'they want to know whether you're transgender' or similar.

Can't believe they did so little proper testing. Anyone with only a little experience of surveys and questionnaires knows to pilot properly and also to think about all the possible misunderstandings or confusion your draft wording might cause.

So many people are employed in positions they are incapable of carrying out. The fabrications from some are inducing illness in vulnerable groups.

As someone else pointed out, money will be redirected to trans now within Brent rather than where it's required, the gaslighting will destroy trust in public servants who will quite rightly untrustworthy liars.

The Muslim community will be telling each other all sorts and will then be called conspiracy theorists and bigots by professionals for not believing in gender identity and the Muslim community will not access services.

What an evil thing to have done, it reminds me of Andrew Moffat targeting Muslims in Birmingham. I remember they were going to home school and move away to save their children from no outsiders indoctrination.

TRSOHers don't identify as being privileged word salad pricks who get off on performative virtue signalling, but rather as InclusivelyBeingKind to the really most vulnerable delicate oppressed actual people. And that makes it so.

Nasty things like good data quality and factual reality are both bigoted and beneath them.

BovrilMartini · 10/04/2023 07:48

I attended an ONS focus group on this question before the last census. It was a complete shit show. I got the distinct impression that they had already decided the question and they thought this was a process.

They used Cis throughout. Even after I explained that I didn’t use it. I pointed out that many people wouldn’t understand the question. I pointed out that I didn’t have a gender identity so where was the option to opt out. I emailed them feedback after the event and I never even received an acknowledgment

Flev · 10/04/2023 07:51

I ran a survey over 10yrs ago in a previous job among mainly older people which I was asked to include the exact same gender identity question as was used in the 2021 census. The results suggested over 25% of respondents were trans. This was so blatantly ridiculous that I was able to make a strong case for people simply not understanding the question, and hence for ignoring the findings.

Since then, when I've been pushed to include this question I've explained that experience and instead proposed "Do you consider yourself to be trans?". It's much simpler, and if you have no idea what trans means then you probably aren't, so would then correctly tick "no". It's better, but I still get pockets of "yes" responses where I suspect confusion has occurred.

The challenge for people like me is we're expected to check our participant demographics against the census to look for areas of under-representation and then ask services to consider ways of reaching out to under-represented communities. If census data is this clearly wrong I'm now going to have to make that argument internally within my organisation, to avoid prioritising the wrong things.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 10/04/2023 07:54

Fucking hell @MrsOvertonsWindow isnt extraordinary how the most marginalised and vulnerable evah/“there so few of us what difference does it make you bigots???” manage to hold so many influential positions in the civil service, the NHS, & the law

MrsOvertonsWindow · 10/04/2023 07:59

Thank you for that explanation @Flev - accurate data is critical and knowing that trans zealots have been allowed to infiltrate so many organisations and are diverting energy, resources and actual direction of travel is dangerous - even more so at a time of limited resources.

Slightly off topic but I'm always enraged when I see the amount of ££ and resources diverted in the NHS to gender woowoo / eradicating sex based language / wedging sex offenders onto women's wards etc. The NHS currently presides over so much dangerous maternity care that harms women and babies. Just imagine how those financial & staff time resources could help if redirected into improving the countless unsafe maternity units.
