What is a woman, by modern standards and definitions?

Outright - I’m a sex not gender woman. But I’ve reached the point of so what exactly is a woman, as defined by inclusivity to gender based identification? If woman is gender-based, what is a woman by that definition?

Taxpayer it honestly isn’t being posed as a gotcha, it’s a genuine question. How does anyone know, even though I’m an adult human female, that I feel like a woman? I honestly don’t understand what that means

taxpayer1 · 08/04/2023 17:34

Everybody understand your reason for posing the question.

Well I’m glad to know that. @taxpayer1 what is your definition of woman please?

That should read:
I honestly don’t know what that means if it doesn’t mean adult human female

mamakoukla · 08/04/2023 17:40

@NotHavingIt i guess many of us live in the first world so, yes quite pertinent in understanding where we align with that

I'm not sure i understand your point?

TheCentreSlide · 08/04/2023 17:51

@taxpayer1 please answer the question as best you can. What is a woman?

If a trans woman is someone who is born a man and who wants to identify as a woman, what is it that he is identifying as? What is the nature of that which he wishes to be?

The truth is it is meaningless when it is unmoored from biological reality. It is a post modernistic construction of the type that posits we all define our own reality and there is no objective truth. A continuation, and end point ,of American consumer culture aligned with rampant individualism.

Grayson Perry says that when he dresses up as a four year old girl, Claire, what he is saying is " I want to be cared for in an unconditional way". His childhood perception was that if he had been a girl he would receive more love. He grew up with an abusive step father and a mother with mental health issues.

You are, of course, being ironic? In what way would it make sense?

Because if that was the case being a 'a woman' is menaingless; it just means whatever anyone wants it to mean.

I was posting tongue in cheek, but you are correct that as it stands woman means what anyone wants it to mean.

A little more seriously though, man / woman is not actually a feeling, but identity politics tell us that "we are who we feel" that it ends up that "feeling like a woman" is the absence of "feeling like a man" . But no one really feels like a man or like a woman.

TheCentreSlide · 08/04/2023 18:12

@NotHavingIt So GP is hopefully clearly stating that he is NOT a four year old girl. It’s an attempt to access a feeling. And in no way makes him female or a girl.

Madamecastafiore · 08/04/2023 18:15

Someone born without a penis.

From the World Health Organisation:

"Gender interacts with but is different from sex. The two terms are distinct and should not be used interchangeably. It can be helpful to think of sex as a biological characteristic and gender as a social construct. Sex refers to a set of biological attributes in humans and animals. Sex is mainly associated with physical and physiological features including chromosomes, gene expression, hormone level and function, and reproductive and sexual anatomy."

Grace Lavery (?), a trans woman, once defined 'woman' as socially the group which takes the submissive role in sex and the home-focused role in economic life. To add to various definitions of 'woman' trans activists have proposed. It's better than Andrea Long Chu's "dead eyes- expectant *hole" definition that was posted here earlier, but not by much.

I presume Lavery transitioned to that definition, though hasn't quit working for money.

A woman is an adult human female. Any responses that rely on feelings, clothes, circular definitions or because I say so are just gaslighting.

LemonadeSunshine · 08/04/2023 18:48

Adult human female. All day, every day. That's it.

I speak sense so I wouldn't know.

Yes, of course!

Grayson Perry's memoir 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Girl' is a good read. He is very honest and very insightful about his own cross dressing.

The times when I have personallly had 'that feeling', though, has been after having given birth, or in circumstances in which my female body is centre.

I'm not sure i understand your point?

I’m not sure I fully understood your initial comment of “This is such a first world order of question, anyway. It exudes privilege.”

What is a first world order question?
Why does asking what a women is exude privilege?

I’m honestly confused by your comment, and also by how the world is redefining the term woman. To the point, I’ve always considered myself a woman but completely cannot get my head around self identification hence, how is woman defined if people identify as a woman?

I’ve spent a lifetime of sex-based exclusion as I’m not male. Barriers to acceptance, inclusion, opportunity, the right to an opinion, equal pay etc. I’m simply trying to understand what woman is, in terms of identifying as a woman rather than being born a woman.
