Tickle vs Giggle

For those of who are aware of the Tickle vs Giggle court case in Australia, Sall Grover is looking for some gardening to be done to support her defence. The deplorable response of politicians and the press in Australia to the Let Women Speak rallies, only emphasises how important this case will be.

Just search Giggle crowd fund - she has set up her own site to avoid any potential censorship by the established sites

Now standing at Aus$ 406,000.

Rightsraptor · 01/04/2024 22:40

The court case is in Sydney, but at the moment there don't seem to be plans for live streaming. I wonder if it's unusual there? It's getting more common here (UK), good job too - open justice and all.

anyolddinosaur · 02/04/2024 13:43

$406,052 now. Anyone want to donate easter egg as a change from plants? Although carrots would also be appropriate.

Rightsraptor · 03/04/2024 09:09

Bumping.

Sall now has Aus $413,611 in the Crowdfunder and needs $500,000 - come on, Mumsnet! Let's help her get there.

Rightsraptor · 03/04/2024 10:17

Bumping.

Planting needed!

emeraldsapphire · 03/04/2024 10:23

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her.

emeraldsapphire · 03/04/2024 10:24

And donating too, of course!

SelfPortraitWithHagstone · 03/04/2024 10:32

Just donated - although it doesn't seem to have updated the total yet...

Rightsraptor · 03/04/2024 13:03

I wonder who's paying the costs for 'Roxie Tickell'.

The Australian state. Excellent episode of "The Queens Speech" podcast interviewing Sall Grover and really going into the history of the case, and I'm pretty sure she said that towards the end.

Queens Speech Extra with Sall Grover

The hilariously-named but actually very significant case of Tickle vs Giggle. A trans-identifying male gets refused access to a female-only app and the usual...

$421,475 now. Google giggle crowdfund if you want to support them.

Signalbox · 04/04/2024 16:47

Does anyone know if this will be remotely accessible to watch?

Xiaoxiong · 04/04/2024 17:06

@anyolddinosaur I've just donated and it still says $421,475 on the main page so the number will soon be (a bit) higher!

Rightsraptor · 04/04/2024 17:42

I don't think it will be possible to watch remotely, @Signalbox: I heard the TRAs have made that impossible by their behaviour. The time difference between the UK and Australia would make it quite a commitment, for me at least.

Make yourself a tea/coffee and read this submission by Reem Alsalem. Gold.

That is a great statement.

I find it incredibly frustrating when judges consider older laws and conventions through a gender prism that has only come into being very recently.

There’s no doubt that the words women and sex had specific meanings when those laws were written and I think those absolutely should be honoured when considering how the law should be applied.

MarieDeGournay · 04/04/2024 23:24

I agree that it's a great and most welcome statement from Reem Alsalem. What would we do without her?
There can be debates around interpretation of words - I read about a case where the issue was: does the word 'cattle' include pigs?(Sorry, can't remember the outcome☺) - but the word 'woman' including men is such a forced stretch it's shocking that it's taken hold.
So it's really valuable to have this statement to quote when sex-based rights are ignored.

Snowypeaks · 05/04/2024 06:33

Clear, unequivocal and helpful statement about what a woman is in international law from Reem Alsalem. Very important for Sall's case that Alsalem says the right to non-discrimination on the grounds of female sex is an absolute right. That means it doesn't have to be balanced against other rights.

Also clear and unequivocal that lesbians are women and that intersectionality means addressing different forms of discrimination faced by women as a biological sex class.

UK government, EHRC, please take note.

anyolddinosaur · 05/04/2024 09:53

Doesnt look like the amount always goes up straight away (maybe only when it's cleared by their bank) but it's $425,323 now.

Maerchentante · 05/04/2024 10:34

Just did some digging :)

This approach in legal interpretation lies at the heart of the war between the textualists and the purposivists in the legal system of the US. It's part of what's been going on in the US Supreme Court.
