@Shelefttheweb
I agree it's finance issues, but to me it looks like the rapist story was the Jenga brick that started the whole tower falling down. Her resignation, all the heat and attention around it, NS's probable loss of iron control over authorities like the police. I'd also like to know the status of the Scottish Attorney General with respect to the SNP now. It's my understanding that when NS was using the law to try and stitch up Alex Salmond the SAG being a part of NS's cabinet was considered by the UK govt in the ensuing enquiry to be a conflict of interest and not independent. I'm wondering how the SAG dynamic has changed since then. I hope it's changed since NS resigned, because HY loves to abuse power.

ArabellaScott · 18/04/2023 12:22

One could speculate that the entire problem is about power and control within the party. Finances are one aspect of that, enforcing ideological views is another.

I sometimes think the absurdity of 'TWAW' is the point. If one can force someone to mouth something that everyone knows is an untruth, one has a good metric of demonstrating who will submit and who will refuse.

Waitwhat23 · 18/04/2023 12:49

I'm just a bit agog at how quickly the house of cards has come falling down over the last few weeks. There have been rumblings for years about a few things but were always dismissed and the SNP seemed untouchable. Apart from a few die hards, insisting that everyone else is a troublemaking unionist (even if they support independence), there's loads of people I know who previously (up until very recently) saw Nicola as some sort of saint and the SNP as the answer to all problems who now are absolutely scathing about the state of Scottish politics.

ArabellaScott · 18/04/2023 12:52

It'll be interesting to see what effect all of this has on those who have repeatedly chanted the praises of the ever-so-progressive SNP.

All just looks rather sordid and grubby, now.

SquidwardBound · 18/04/2023 13:52

@Waitwhat23 it is remarkable, isn’t it? Who’d’ve thought that would be reading phrases like the SNP’s ‘Sturgeon problem’ even a few weeks ago.

All the ‘wheesht for Nicola/independence’ stuff sounds very different indeed with all the new information that has shifted the context entirely.

I suspect what we’re going to see is all the vitriol landing more or less on Nicola as an individual (and potentially Peter too): A quite personal witch hunt that means they don’t have to question any of the structural or ideological stuff.

SquidwardBound · 18/04/2023 17:22

That is both hilarious and depressing as an analysis of the state of the SNP.

Shelefttheweb · 18/04/2023 17:39

Looking at HY ministers, it is very depressing how singularly under qualified they are for their jobs.

nilsmousehammer · 18/04/2023 18:30

Very acute article, particularly its description of how the SNP - and many other political and establishment groups, charities, services - have intentionally chased out the intelligent, questioning, diverse of thinking and capable of critical thinking talent in favour of gullible yes-men, largely promoted way beyond their capacity.

In some cases, entirely without capacity but with a nice PR protected characteristic.

Shelefttheweb · 18/04/2023 19:45

Didn’t the SNP prioritise disabled candidates on their regional msp lists?

Yes, preferentially so. Guess what? A bunch of chances started claiming all kinds of mental health issues (self identifying of course-where have we heard that before?) to get on the gravy train.

ArabellaScott · 18/04/2023 20:09

Yes, Emma Roddick won her seat on the basis of her personality disorder being a disability.

EmotionalSupportHyena · 18/04/2023 21:55

That was a very entertaining and somewhat terrifying article.

I’m English and I’m generally quite ambivalent about the UK, happy to have you all but wouldn’t get worked up if any nation were to democratically decide to leave (see also: the realms and commonwealth countries).
IMO, any nation that decides it’s got enough going for it to be able to ditch an historical oppressor/occupier and forge it’s own onward path should be congratulated and waved off with best wishes, no need to take it as a personal rejection (but then I am a terrible Pollyanna)…

… but holy shit, surely even those who are totally committed to a future of Scottish Independence must be looking at the shit show that is the SNP and wondering who the fuck would actually be capable of taking charge of an independent Scotland?

Although tbf, I wonder if most (if not all) political parties in the U.K. and abroad are just as big an idiocracy as the SNP…

As my funny little DD11 said about the US recently ‘How DOES a country with over 300 million citizens manage to whittle it down to a straight choice between the bonkers bloke off The Apprentice or the barely-alive Joe Biden?’

JanesLittleGirl · 18/04/2023 22:26

That would be the perennial question. If God had meant us to have a President, He would have given us a candidate.

EmotionalSupportHyena · 19/04/2023 07:20

Just noticed the main Westminster parliament website has started organising MPs by male, female and non binary genders.

😬

That's way to finish off Sir Edward Leigh, I suppose. He'll need the parliamentary defibrillator when he sees that.

I might write to him and blame it on Caroline Nokes.

That’s one for baroness nicholson

if they have an option for “any” they should also have an option for “none”

I love the second photo showing the motorhome behind bars.

Nightlystroll · 19/04/2023 16:59

I wonder what the mileage on that motorhome is?
