I'm not happy about this. I don't think this is helpful for kids. Is that just me?

The question is how 'political' this appearance ends up being I suppose.

I agree, sadly recent series don’t look good on that score. On the bases of recent episodes I wouldn’t be totally surprised if the Earth had been destroyed because TERFs had failed to accept men could be women, the Dr manages to tweak the chameleon circuit of the tardis so it becomes a progress pride flag, Terfs are dispatched to oblivion with the Darleks, and the poor oppressed transwomen creep out of hiding into the daylight of a brand new dawn.

How did you access RTD's computer?? 😂

Those terrible terves, aligning themselves with (fascist) Daleks again!

There was the character Cassendra, who claimed to have grown up a boy, but then after 7008 plastic surgery operations seemed to be a narcissistic psychotic female killer who was essentially just a piece of skin with a face.
How lovely pre QT Doctor Who was!

RTD knows how to make great television, he knows how to pull the heartstrings. And he knows how to push his views and perspectives too.
He's too clever and he knows people are sick of being clumsily preached at.
I'm sure he'll be going for rip roaring adventures again. I'm sure we'll get a good side helping of "be kind and inclusive".
I'm excited about the cast LOTS of talent there. I just want the good Dr Who back.

I watched It's A Sin the other week. Very moving, but I was also struck at how the mother was blamed for the guy shagging around and giving lots of men HIV; she was a devil. The gay man had no capacity for right and wrong, so damaged was he by the evil woman, and she was awful.
The other main female character was an angel. She lived through the gay men like she had no other life, but to party with them and nurse and care for them.

It was like the women were judged through their behaviour towards the men. That was their point .

RTD has got some unresolved misogynist issues to deal with I suspect. A psychoanalysist could have a field day with some of this, I'm sure.

He's still a great writer. And although, as I'm a literal witch in his eyes, I still enjoy his work.

I don't think RTD writes particulaly believable female characters.

Back behind the sofa I go...

Pennywise meets Liberace and his piano.

Rose (Billy piper) was a believable female character

Yes granted, but I am struggling to think of another tbh. The mum in Years and Years was well rounded, but I think that may be due to the magnificent Anne Reid than the script. They seem to be a bit 'stock' generally, to me anyway.

The women stuck on the spacecraft in Midnight were believable too imo, I'm thinking the young scientist lady who's partnered with her patronising creepy boss and the woman who ends up getting possessed (can't remember their names, been a while since I watched that episode!
Never seen Years and Years

I love Midnight, its one of my favourites. The concept is brilliant, the acting superb. But I think the female characters are not particularly well written. They are just all a bit two dimensional. Until they are possessed by an alien of course. And I do appreciate that this is a children's show, or at least a show that children should be able to watch and understand.

It doesn't stop me from watching RTD, I do like his programes, but really for the plot, or ideas, I just don't expect to believe the characters.

I really recommend Years and Years, I was glued to it.
