I'm not happy about this. I don't think this is helpful for kids. Is that just me?

"The transhumanism stuff in Years and Years can easily be read as a (negative) commentary on transgender issues, and the perils of teen transition in particular." I didn't read it that way in the end - he showed two teenage girls wanting to be transhuman who go to a dodgy offshore private surgeon for one to have it done, which turns out badly, but when the other does it through establishment channels it all turns out wonderfully and she uses her new powers to save the day in the political plotline. So his message here could be interpreted as 'make teenage transitioning available on the NHS not in Miami or Thailand'.

During the publicity interviews around the release of It’s A Sin RTD name checked the 1980s Labour left leader of Lambeth Council, Black lesbian activist of African & Jewish heritage, former Spare Rib Collective member (and notorious terf!) Linda Bellos as one of his personal inspirations.

So maybe the weird Queer Theory stuff he’s been promoting ever since is some sort of sack cloth and ashes penance after he was thoroughly re-educated by the BlueHairs?

ReadersD1gest · 04/04/2023 13:03

OhVicIveFallen · 03/04/2023 21:40

I think its just you tbh. Why is this a bad thing? I'm a massive terf but I don't see a man playing a woman in a TV show as a problem. He may even be playing an alien who knows? Do you have a problem with the transgirl playing Rose?

Is it a man? Why does the article refer to the "actress" as she?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 04/04/2023 13:50

I’m disappointed by this. RTD really seems to have a problem with women, in It’s a Sin the female characters were sidelined as carers or figures of blame. Drag is adult entertainment, it’s not appropriate for 7pm prime time tv or libraries.

AnythingToSay · 04/04/2023 17:15

RTD is such a bitter disappointment. Feel like he's desperately chasing youth approval. He used to create such wonderful female characters in the 90s-00s, but most of his 2010s+ output has been regressive rubbish, to the point I think he's developed a genuine issue with women over the past decade.

I guess women aren't trendy enough for him to big up now? Got to support the pretendy ones instead now?

Such a sell-out.

IvyTwines · 04/04/2023 21:46

Meanwhile, in the new Spiderverse movie trailer, the female character Gwen has a trans flag with 'protect trans kids' written on it in her bedroom. Twitter gleeful that it might signal she's trans (so much cooler than just being a girl). Or maybe she's just 'being kind' by supporting the lucrative lifelong medicalisation of gay and autistic children.

I would like to express my thanks to many of the posters on this board. The 'Fam' thing, clumsy writing, and social justice warrior taking over the intent was beautifully highlighted by many posts.

Doctor Who has been a favourite of mine since childhood. There were some Doctors who were impressive and others may not have been amazing.

When Peter Capaldi took the role I became less interested mainly because the plots were less engaging and the writing was lacking. His replacement faced a difficult task.

I stopped attending church as listening to the preaching from the pulpit was not mandatory. Doctor Who became a replacement pulpit used to explain to any viewer the nature of their crimes. It was as subtle as the Minister expounding about all the sin he saw within his congregation.

I stopped watching Doctor Who for the reason I stopped attending church (but the miogyny of the church was also a factor). Reading this thread made me realise it was not just my imagination the show had wandered far from entertainment.

Thank you, women of Mumsnet.

It's a bit shit really. I agree with a PP about Jodie Whitaker and "the fam", although I did like all the companions. Why did she need so many? It was all a bit the little lady can't cope on her own?

So now we're back to having the doctor played by man, with a companion that's a transwomen (so, a man) and a drag Queen (so, another man) Great.

Are they actually doing that?

If so I will be so disappointed. Can't they leave anything alone? There will be nothing left to enjoy soon.

Rose is going to be played by a biological male.

Davros · 07/04/2023 11:46

Here I am, the original Dirty Davros.
Obviously I am a big DW fan, from the original series when I was a kid up to the reboot. DD is also a massive fan but we really cooled off when Capaldi joined, although we like him, it got tired and the writing flagged. JW's Doctor and stories then became a joke to us. We watched the last episode only to see the reappearance of DT. I really agree with the comments here about casting a Drag Queen, although I have mixed feelings about drag, and where are the actual women in the cast? We will hold judgement until we've seen it.

To sit on the fence - I think the promo pics look good and in a lot of ways, Jinkx is a good fit. Jinkx is from a theatre-comedy-musical background and has always been a geeky, more 'old school' drag queen who never had a sleazy, sexy act. Jinkx has just been playing Mama Moreton on Broadway. So is actually capable of doing the job rather than it being any kind of stunt casting.

However Jinkx has identified as non binary for the last few years and considers themselves to be trans with it, and anything that perpetuates more of that meaningless nonsense is a turn off for me. The question is how 'political' this appearance ends up being I suppose.

Shelefttheweb · 20/04/2023 09:53

If Jinx is some sort of random Alien villain then it could be ok - who’s to say that alien culture doesn’t dress men in weird, to Earth eyes, relatively feminine stereotyped costumes. I would have a lot more problems if the produces try to claim they are a woman.

Shelefttheweb · 20/04/2023 10:02

I agree, sadly recent series don’t look good on that score. On the bases of recent episodes I wouldn’t be totally surprised if the Earth had been destroyed because TERFs had failed to accept men could be women, the Dr manages to tweak the chameleon circuit of the tardis so it becomes a progress pride flag, Terfs are dispatched to oblivion with the Darleks, and the poor oppressed transwomen creep out of hiding into the daylight of a brand new dawn.

PurpleBugz · 03/04/2023 22:20

I can get past how painful the shoes look in that picture. Massively cutting into the feet.

Unless the character is drag then I don't think I'm too happy about it. And if it's going to make mockery of women I'm not happy about it it depends on how it's done.

Yes - the shoes look so very painful. Makes me wince….

In what way?

(genuine question)

Would you be ok with someone from the black and white minstrel show joining the cast?

In that way, that's the way its not ok.

Clymene · 20/04/2023 13:57

Dr Who and its all male cast. How very progressive Hmm

Crocodilekneecaps · 20/04/2023 17:39

The companion is female

Happylittlechicken · 20/04/2023 17:42

Nope. The companion at the moment is a male with a trans identity. So male doctor, male companion, male villain. So diverse, much inclusivity

Crocodilekneecaps · 20/04/2023 17:44

Doc is black

PuttingDownRoots · 20/04/2023 17:44

I think some people are confusing the character of Rose, (not Rose Tyler), played by Yasmin Finney, that will be in the special with David Tennant, with the new companion played by Millie Gibson

Crocodilekneecaps · 20/04/2023 17:44

His first words better be "Still not ginger!"

Just kidding, I stopped watching DW back at the end of Capaldi's run.
