I'm not happy about this. I don't think this is helpful for kids. Is that just me?

I think its just you tbh. Why is this a bad thing? I'm a massive terf but I don't see a man playing a woman in a TV show as a problem. He may even be playing an alien who knows? Do you have a problem with the transgirl playing Rose?

Well given there's about 7 male roles in film to about 3 female ones, and similar among extras, maybe it would be more helpful the other way around. And maybe get to fucking 50:50 at least.

IvyTwines · 03/04/2023 23:30

Is Doctor Who like Elizabethan theatre now, where the female parts are played by men and boys?

Hoardasurass · 03/04/2023 23:31

Dr who is now banned in this house all the lead characters are played by males (regardless of how they identify) not one actual women I'm done with the BBC and its constant pushing of this gender bs on children and young teens who are the target audience of Dr Who

KilljoysMakeSomeNoise · 03/04/2023 23:45

It's a bit shit really. I agree with a PP about Jodie Whitaker and "the fam", although I did like all the companions. Why did she need so many? It was all a bit the little lady can't cope on her own?

So now we're back to having the doctor played by man, with a companion that's a transwomen (so, a man) and a drag Queen (so, another man) Great.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 03/04/2023 23:45

We're out now.

Shame.

I can get past how painful the shoes look in that picture. Massively cutting into the feet.

Unless the character is drag then I don't think I'm too happy about it. And if it's going to make mockery of women I'm not happy about it it depends on how it's done.

And the mid-calf sock indentation on one leg. My first thought was fluid retention, should maybe see a GP.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/04/2023 00:08

I like my strong interesting female characters to be played by actual females. I’ll watch the DT episodes then leave it. Woman face leaves me cold.

DemiColon · 04/04/2023 01:20

I am totally fine with any actor playing any role so long as it convinces me of whatever I need to be convinced of.

The problem I have with Dr Who is that their casting, like their plot lines, mainly seem to be a vehicle for virtue signalling and finger wagging at the viewers. It's annoying and patronizing and, as we can all see, leads to truly awful scripts.

This seems to fit right in with that.

I keep wondering how long they can keep the show going with it's abysmal viewing numbers. They seem to realize they are doing something wrong, but every time they try and make a change they double down on the things that are actually driving people away.

I've found it really interesting how writers who I know have some real ability, like RTD, can, under the influence of modern id pol, produce such utter shit, and think it's good. It's very weird, like it's melted their brains.

CremeEggQueen · 04/04/2023 01:37

I love Dr Who.
Not going to write any character off before seeing them in person so to speak.
Made that mistake before with Donna, thought she was going to be well irritating but she was an amazing and one of the best in my opinion companions.

Allmyghosts · 04/04/2023 01:46

I haven't disliked anything rtd has done so have high hopes, can't be worse than chibnall and I wasn't overly keen on Moffat if I'm being honest.

Happylittlechicken · 04/04/2023 05:47

So in doctor who males play both the main female and male roles! Back to Elizabethan times we go. On the subject of Jinkx and the misogynistic subject of drag…. I think Jinkx is one of the lovely people who refer to woman as “fishy”. So a man dressing up as a woman using sexist stereotypes to mock and degrade women. So progressive.
I do look forward to the episode of Dr Who featuring the black and white minstrels….. because if womanface is ok, blackface must be too right?

PriOn1 · 04/04/2023 06:35

I will be giving it a try. I was very sad that Jodie Whittaker’s episodes very quickly descended into enforced “education” rather than a smattering of education and politics well integrated within a strong, entertaining storyline.

I was pleased when I heard RTD was returning, but the extremist views he expressed at the BAFTAs, followed by a raft of reveals about “inclusive” characters does concern me. I will watch and hope he can pull it off, but me and several members of my family (huge Who fans all) have all expressed misgivings.

I think it's good for kids to see a variety of different people on telly, but drag is without a doubt degrading to women and calling women 'fishy' well that's just horrible and not good for kids. I hate drag and just don't find the crude jokes and innuendos funny, especially when at the expense of women. Vile

Happylittlechicken · 04/04/2023 06:56

Exactly a variety of people. Including female people in female roles. What does it say when the two main roles (including the female role) are played by men?

risefromyourgrave · 04/04/2023 07:15

RTD strikes me as the type of bloke who doesn’t like women very much in real life, which is sad when you see how he can write amazingly strong female parts, Billie Piper’s Rose being one of them. Maybe if he wrote that part now it would be a bloke in drag or a transwoman playing it, I have a feeling that’s what he’d prefer.

Although I suppose Joss Whedon wrote amazingly strong female parts but turned out to be a dick towards women, albeit for different reasons, sigh.

ChaToilLeam · 04/04/2023 07:20

I’ve given up. First the preachiness of Whitaker’s era, now this. I used to love this show so much but it’s just become a vehicle to push an agenda now.

ApocalipstickNow · 04/04/2023 07:31

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 03/04/2023 22:54

I dunno - I’d think I’d be quite interested in a Dirty Den x Dalek storyline.

Dirty Davros?

The nerd in me has to point out Leslie Grantham has already served the Daleks in Resurrection of the Daleks (sadly, not as Dirty Den).

Sorry.

ImAvingOops · 04/04/2023 07:34

I gave up on it once it stopped being entertaining and became just preachy. I want an escape from reality, not more of the same old shit that we see irl.
JW was dire as the Dr. Not her fault - the story lines and script were awful. And they wrote her as a bit thick and bumbling. Poor writing is what did for Peter Capaldi too and seems to be a problem generally with the writers. It hasn't been good since the Matt Smith version.

I'm fed up with having men doing woman face thrown at me constantly. If they want to do the trans thing, why do they never show the experience of transmen? Oh, that's right, because we all know transmen are actually female and who gives a shit about them!

olvxska · 04/04/2023 07:38

My nephew loves Dr Who, but more David Tennant era. I noticed the latest ones seemed more preachy, especially when a bloke appeared to give birth in a clip I saw - although I only saw 2 mins of it & can't remember the episode etc... but I don't watch it.

One GC gay friend says why is it only drag queens that get rolled out to be role models for LBG kids, why not a gay pilot or gay brain surgeon?

The BBC has got into bed with Disney for future Dr Who, I wonder if that's where it's coming from as Jinx Monsoon is American. They could've got a UK drag queen on if they wanted to pursue this line.

Sorry.

Never apologise, friend.

Backstreets · 04/04/2023 07:50

RTD is at least a good writer responsible for some good shows. I find Jinx to be a bit of stunt casting (an American drag queen primarily known for reality tv in British sci fi?) but rtd does seem to care very much about the new school “queer” community, so hopefully he’ll be successful in creating characters people care about. (Doesn’t affect me anyway as I’ve never watched this show and never will)

CampervanKween · 04/04/2023 07:52

I'm in agreement with a lot of you. Used to adore Dr Who. The BBC ruined it sadly. Preachy, boring we gave up with it and this new incarnation sounds even worse sadly.

I just want entertainment where I can escape to a fantasy world with some humour as well. I think a lot of the very popular series recently were just that, and quite traditional. I think that's what most people want.

Fairislefandango · 04/04/2023 07:58

I was going to watch the David Tennant ones, but after seeing the post about RTD's comments I think I'll give it a miss. Can't stand woman-face. I find it distasteful both in principle and aesthetically.

Fairislefandango · 04/04/2023 08:00

Oh and completely agree that the Jodie Whittaker ones were awful - badly written, badly cast and infuriatingly preachy.

Giggorata · 04/04/2023 08:07

Chibnail fucked up the canon and failed in his writing of a female Doctor.
I had some hopes that RTD would restore Dr Who back to its glorious self… but this looks as though it is going to be just more tedious LGB TQ etc propaganda.
