I'm not happy about this. I don't think this is helpful for kids. Is that just me?

In what way?

(genuine question)

OhVicIveFallen · 03/04/2023 21:40

I think its just you tbh. Why is this a bad thing? I'm a massive terf but I don't see a man playing a woman in a TV show as a problem. He may even be playing an alien who knows? Do you have a problem with the transgirl playing Rose?

pickledandpuzzled · 03/04/2023 21:46

Not thrilled either. I don't think a character/personality can be acting, can they?

If the person who plays the drag queen wants to act, well fine.
But they can't play a drag queen and a character, I don't think.

I dislike woman face, anyway.

And drag is adult entertainment, not kids' ents. So all in all, not a good move.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 03/04/2023 21:47

It's a tv show about a 2 hearted time travelling alien, who has been played by actors of both sex already, I'm very excited about this, I love Jinx Monsoon!!

This is what is confusing me tbh. Is he a playing a character playing a character?

Did you love The Black and White Minstrel Show too? Why is woman face any different to that?

Wehadabetamax · 03/04/2023 21:55

Well that depends if Rose is a female or male character, doesn't it? I haven't seen anything to say which yet.

OhVicIveFallen · 03/04/2023 21:55

Woman face my arse. Is he claiming to be an actual woman? No. Is he taking a part meant for a female actor? No. He's an actor playing a part. That's it.

pickledandpuzzled · 03/04/2023 21:57

Well if he just an actor then there's no issue. If he's in drag then there is.

Why?

OhVicIveFallen · 03/04/2023 22:00

It's all make believe, it doesn't matter. If he's going to be performing some dodgy women bashing routine the no that's not acceptable but I truly doubt thats going to happen.

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/04/2023 22:03

It's not unexpected, given RTD's ridiculous speech at the Baftas.

To be honest, I'm in two minds about watching it. It really went off the boil when Chris Chibnall took control, far too much new canon, and I just lost interest.

Why?

Because drag takes the puss out of women.
Why should Dr Who want to take the piss out of women?
I mean, we all know the director is a proud queer so could enjoy drag himself for whatever reason but why actually promote misogyny?

Same. I gave up watching when Chibnall took over - the characterisation by in-your-face-special-characteristic-box-ticking instead of organic character development was really getting to me. I was really hoping RTD's return would mean it was worth picking up again. This makes me less optimistic.

Sigh

Is that Rose as in the person Billie Piper played? Straightforward female IIRC.

This all feels like Dr Who has jumped the shark.

SNWannabe · 03/04/2023 22:12

Rose is trans? Wasn't she Billie Piper?

Also, the person as a drag act is acting already...so yeah I wouldn't expect Dirty Den from Eastenders to be in Dr Who... pretending to be a Dalek played by dirty den...

Its all a bit too confusing...and try hard. And they were called "she" in the article...so that does indicate the alter ego is the one who has the dr who job...

Wehadabetamax · 03/04/2023 22:14

There is new character called Rose. The child of Donna and her husband.

PurpleBugz · 03/04/2023 22:20

I can get past how painful the shoes look in that picture. Massively cutting into the feet.

Unless the character is drag then I don't think I'm too happy about it. And if it's going to make mockery of women I'm not happy about it it depends on how it's done.

7Worfs · 03/04/2023 22:22

I stopped watching years ago when the show turned into political statements with some background script.
Being preached at is the exact opposite of entertainment.

7Worfs · 03/04/2023 22:23

Also 🤮 uncanny valley. I can’t even look at photos of drag queens

FatFucker · 03/04/2023 22:25

He calls himself "she" I probably won't be watching. Fucking hate drag.

Dr Who has completely lost the plot. Such a shame. :(

Nellieinthebarn · 03/04/2023 22:27

I have a feeling that RTD will turn Doctor Who into a Queer Theory propaganda machine. Which is a great shame because I loved his first era, and was really pleased when it was revived. I probably won't bother watching if a drag queen is in the show in drag, I really find drag offensive.

I dunno - I’d think I’d be quite interested in a Dirty Den x Dalek storyline.

Dirty Davros?

PickAChew · 03/04/2023 22:57

It's not like you don't have to leave your sense of reality at the door to watch Dr Who, anyhow. The whole bloody show is make believe.

Yes, I mostly agree with this.
I didn't enjoy Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, and I wanted to. I found many of the storylines boring and preachy. And why did the first female Dr need to have so many companions (and calling them "the fam" made me cringe every time), it's almost like she wasn't as strong/competent as the male ones.
I'll watch the episodes with David Tennant, but I can see myself giving up after this as I'm sure RTD will be shoving everything queer front and centre (and no I don't mean LGB) to prove a point to the "transphobes".
