Suella Braverman vows to stamp out grooming gangs behind organised child sex abuse

1000 replies

IwantToRetire · 03/04/2023 00:30

The Home Secretary, writing in The Mail on Sunday, pledges to 'track down and punish the grooming gangs with the same sense of mission and determination' used to pursue the murderers of Stephen Lawrence, the black British teenager who was killed in a racially motivated attack at a bus stop in South London in 1993.

Ms Braverman, who was born in Harrow, in North-West London, to a Kenyan mother and Mauritian father, writes: 'The time has come to make right one of the greatest injustices seen in Britain in modern times. The systematic rape, exploitation and abuse of young girls by organised gangs of older men – and the disgraceful failure of the authorities to act despite ample evidence – is a stain on our country.'

A Buddhist, Ms Braverman describes the 'perpetrators' as 'groups of men, almost all British-Pakistani, who hold cultural attitudes completely incompatible with British values'.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-11928629/SUELLA-BRAVERMAN-mission-ensure-really-no-hiding-place-gangs-grooming-young-girls.html

I am not sure if this is just the DM take on what she said, or if it accurately reflects what she said.

If she did say this and not talk about how men of all cultures, given the opportunity, have and will exploit young women, then she is letting down all the women who are exploited.

Well what I've concluded from this thread, is that SB needs to be brave and continue on regardless of the lefty purity spiral whataboutery Rik's that walk amongst us.

Yes

Braverman a Buddhist??

They've had 12 years to deal with this crap, let's not give them any longer.

This. I'd feel a lot more confident in this announcement of it wasn't from someone venal and useless.

Still I think the legal charges proposed are good.

Exactly. I hold no hope whatsoever that the gov genuinely care about these issues.

It's more election grabs.

Whaeanui · 04/04/2023 14:08

I have, Gov.UK/HO say ALL offenders/victims and Braverman said "vast majority are Pakistani men"

OH FOR FUCKS SAKE!

She was specifically referencing the cases in Rotherham, Rochdale, Telford…

it seems to be some think nobody in government should ever separately discuss those cases ever again. And we go round and fucking round

Well, what I've concluded from this thread is slightly different. It is that SB has been at least in part successful with her aims.

You can shout and swear all you like but the fact is she never linked her bullet point TWO to any reference to Rotherham etc "Pakistani men"

I also listened to her on Sophie Ridge and SB was challenged on this but SB doubled down "Pakistani men" she repeated.

The HO/Govt have contradicter her because they, unlike you, know she was wrong to do so.

Its only going around in circles because you and many others will never countenance criticism of the current Govt.

DysonSpheres · 04/04/2023 14:27

I think what she's done here is disgusting. It's not even dog whistling, there's no subtlety and judging by responses it's working. I don't think she's sincere at all. I can't believe she had the audacity to bring SL death into it. As if his death has been used enough as a political scoring board. She KNOWS the resentment that boils in certain sub-sections of society around the investigation of his murder. How low can you get.

Whaeanui · 04/04/2023 14:28

you are so boring. Assuming once again what posters think about the current govt because we happen to not come to the same conclusions about Suella’s intentions as you do.

AdamRyan · 04/04/2023 14:44

Thought it would be useful to transcribe what she actually said to Sophy Ridge:

"What's clear is what we've seen is a practice whereby vulnerable white English girls, sometimes who are in care, sometimes in challenging circumstances, being pursued and raped and drugged and harmed by gangs of British Pakistani men who've worked in child abuse rings or networks. We've seen institutions and state agencies, whether it's social workers, teachers, the police turn a blind eye to these signs of abuse out of political correctness, out of fear of being called racist, out of fear of being called bigoted. And as a result, thousands, we are not talking small numbers, we are talking large numbers, thousands of children have had their childhoods robbed and devastated. And there are many of these perpetrators still running wild, behaving in this way. And it's now down to the authorities to track these perpetrators down, without fear or favour, relentlessly and bring them to justice."

Very emotive language, deliberately distinguishing between "English" girls and "British Pakistani" men. Focusing on the numbers involved and perpetrators "running wild". Naming organisations that turned a blind eye so now the "Authorities" have to step in.

It's interesting too that the news are not reporting it so much. I had to transcribe that myself. I wonder if there are some legal ramifications

I completely agree. I’ve never voted Tory in my life, but these posters seem to have an obsessive hatred for the entire party and so apparently no Tory can ever do anything right/good for women and girls.

If SB was going to do anything for women she would have done it. But she's not doing anything, she's just talking.

I don't understand how in thrall to the Tories, so called feminists here are. They've destroyed women's rights for the past 13 years but everything they make a bullshit statement, we're all supposed to be pathetically grateful?

Fuck that shit.

That's the group think problem with the purity spiral Rik's. They can't break free of it. They might disintegrate if they do. And then where would they be.

AdamRyan · 04/04/2023 14:55

How is calling out racist language from our Home Secretary a purity spiral? There was no positive outcome for contrasting "white English girls" with "gangs of British Pakistani men" other than to highlight the racial aspect. It's disgusting.

It's the worst I've seen by a public figure in a long time.

I don't think the thousands and thousands of girls who have been raped and abused by these grooming gangs, for the past 40 years, will see this as minimal. You don't speak for them.

But you do you.

One of the victims was on the news talking about how SB's proposals wouldn't have made any difference because she and the other girls and their parents did report the gang that were raping them. The police mostly did nothing, sometimes they arrested the victims, other times they returned them to their rapists.

EndlessTea · 04/04/2023 15:13

I don’t find judgemental finger-wagging very persuasive. Does anyone else?

Isn't it great that finally they're going to try and do something about it now 👍

I don't really want to pee in the tea any further but...

None of these changes being discussed are likely to be in effect before the next election

So

Actually, nothing is happening.

Suella Braverman is ambitious and would however like your vote

Yes. You're right. Resorting to calling people facists for having a different point of view demonstrates this point perfectly. 👍

And if something is done to deal with this, and I see the evidence of good progress she may well get my vote 😉

If we want to have a discussion about protecting children, then perhaps we should also bring in the ongoing cuts to education budgets?

As an ex teacher with a daughter now in teaching can say that one of the most damaging things for children has been lock-down - especially the lock-down of schools. It was always obvious this was going to be the case, with the most vulnerable children suffering the most. Many have still not recovered ground, and many are not likley to, as the narrow windows of development close; and that is withoit mentioning the thousands of 'ghost children' who never really came back after the lock-down; and those that now see school as optional - not helped much by the fact that the teachers seem to be striking every couple of weeks.

My daughters school is in an area of deprivation and they have committed to staying open during the strikes, but it means that the teachers who are not striking have to manage large groups of children for days on end as their normal lessons are suspended.

She was highlighting race because race was arguably important in a couple of ways.

She has elsewhere said that she wasn't talking about Pakistani men in general, and they shouldn't be demonised.

Calling everything "racist" is rather childish.
