I grew up in a liberal Guardian reading household throughout the 80s and 90s. Parents from working class northern backgrounds and the first to attend university in their families.
I always thought it was great, enjoyed reading it (there wasn't a lot of entertainment in our house and I was an avid reader/precocious child!). Even I can see how it's changed. Unfortunately my mum (surviving parent) still sings its praises and refuses to hear any criticism. Sends them money too 🙄
I don't respect her opinion these days (she's not an especially warm person) but her indignation is impressive - as though I'm personally insulting her (!)
I don't know where her critical thinking skills have gone. Despite being a feminist/socialist she doesn't seem to 'get' the trans issue either. Not really fussed about hashing it out but I was surprised by her blinkered attitude. She seems to think you have to hand in your liberal credentials if you denounce the Guardian 😂 I'm still left-leaning fwiw.
Does anyone know when or why the Guardian changed? Was it always this bad? I probably stopped reading it around 10-15 years ago except articles online. I shared the Hadley Freeman stuff with mum which seemed to catch her off guard.
