I know the Guardian are generally crap on women’s rights but FFS - no mention of Let Women Speak, stating that it was an “anti-trans” event and the mob were “pro-trans”, rather than pro-women and anti-women. Horrible stuff - I’m going to email.

Anti-trans activist Posie Parker ends New Zealand tour after chaotic protests at event

The controversial UK gender activist was booed, heckled, and doused with tomato juice in a heated confrontation between groups in Auckland

Does anyone know when or why the Guardian changed?

During the American Civil War the Guardian supported the Confederacy (one editorial at the time said that "...it was an evil day both for America and the world when [Lincoln] was chosen President of the United States"). I would argue that the Guardian has always held some pretty dubious views, when its writers believed that they were in the right side of history...

WeeBisom · 26/03/2023 11:39

It’s the work of an evil genius to make all campaigns for women’s rights “anti trans”. These are like scenes from the suffragette protests. Notice how the patriarchy quite happily lets women go on “slut marches” - that kind of man-pleasing feminism is fine. But women being allowed to speak without taking their tops off, and excluding men who say they are women? Fascism!

Re the Guardian, they seem to be very keen on capturing a US readership. It was actually happening when I was a regular reader and I realized that I wasn't particularly interested in some articles as they had little relevance to me. They seem to have gone further down that road and some articles now are really crazy. I also note that they will not allow comment online for lots of articles, mostly to do with identity politics, so it does become an echo chamber.

Cologne NYE did it for me. First the non-reporting (like the BBC) the Gaby Hinsliff's victim-blaming.
But, tbh, it's rubbish now. My dh takes it on Saturday, and it's full of non-stories.

That’s the thing about woks audience capture - if all your articles have to go through a ‘sensitivity reader’ lens before publishing, you end up with tepid, vacuous, nothingness.

Women have given up the Guardian in droves and followed their favourite feminist writers to their new homes at the Speccie, The Times, The Telegraph etc.

Pre 2016 me would’ve laughed in your face if you told me that 2023 me would read more ‘Torygraph’ articles than ‘Grauniad’ ones.

Even the sodding Mail has hosts more feminist opinion than the Graun nowadays (although obvs you have to sift through the more traditional Mail articles and avert your eyes from the Celebrity SideBar of Shame in order to find it!)

This is today's special pop-up message from the Guardian:

We’re a reader-funded news organisation, with more than 1.5 million supporters in 180 countries. With this vital support, our reporting remains fiercely independent, and is never manipulated by commercial or political ties. And it’s free, for everyone. But if you can support us, we need you. Give just once from £1, or better yet, power us every month with a little more. Thank you.

Ha ha ha ha. 'Fiercely independent' my arse. Lying gits.

Toseland · 26/03/2023 12:49

Haven’t looked at the guardian since the reporting on Cologne
have they changed since then?
Me too, read it for 20years. 2015 - I saw clearly then the lack of any consideration at all for women, I can't remember how long it took for them to report it now but between 5-7 days.

Hmmm.

'The Guardian is part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by the Scott Trust.[6] The trust was created in 1936 to "secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity and to safeguard the journalistic freedom and liberal values of The Guardian free from commercial or political interference".[7] The trust was converted into a limited company in 2008, with a constitution written so as to maintain for The Guardian the same protections as were built into the structure of the Scott Trust by its creators. Profits are reinvested in its journalism rather than distributed to owners or shareholders.'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Trust_Limited

'In February 2010, the company announced the sale of its GMG Regional Media arm and its regional print titles to the Trinity Mirror Group'

'Guardian News and Media, a subsidiary of the Scott Trust Limited, reported a loss of £30.9 million for the year to the end of April 2013'

Then they sold off Auto Trader.

'as of 1 April 2018, the value of the Scott Trust Endowment Fund was £1.01 billion, down slightly from £1.03 billion in 2017.'

It's funded by this Trust, as far as I can tell.

Yes, and also - all of it was only relevant to a very specific demographic. Trendy metro elite type of audience. I just don't give a fuck about whether quinoa is 'on trend', I'm afraid.

Ohnohedident · 26/03/2023 13:05

The Guardian has been a shitshow for years now.

When its not actively trying to destroy womens rights, they are shilling for war.

An utter disgrace. Sad as it used to be a paper of note.

GreenWhiteViolet · 26/03/2023 13:13

The Guardian's article on Lidia Thorpe includes a video in which Thorpe refers to Posie as 'that thing' and says she (or 'they' - another interesting linguistic choice) shouldn't be allowed in the country.

No comment on the dehumanising language from the Guardian.

Signalbox · 26/03/2023 13:19

Another serious assault this time on a woman in her 70s probably won't be reported by the MSM. This woman was lucky that someone else pulled the assailant off or she would have got a right pummelling.

Is that the same woman as was in the footage upthread? I hope she's okay.

The Manchester Guardian was on the same side as the Mill owners who were in trouble because the ready supply of cotton from the South dried up. The mill workers were on the side of the slaves and the North.

nilsmousehammer · 26/03/2023 15:39

If being 'pro trans' means violent oppression of women?

It's not a good thing, is it?

They're so independent that they take money from Open Philanthropy which, despite its name, is basically an animal rights outfit. I'm all for animal welfare, but animal rights is something else.

I don't really consider it a newspaper any longer.

Villagetoraiseachild · 26/03/2023 20:22

GB news now, PP, etc

Villagetoraiseachild · 26/03/2023 20:28

Hope its ok to barge in with this. Very supportive coverage with Andrew Boyle, Helen Joyce and Ellen (?).
Break on now, QnA coming up, I think on same topic.
It comes to something that GB news is my go to.
Beeb and Grauniad tragically captured.
Oops, Q n A is general.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/03/2023 21:13

Sorry for detailing the original thread, I've much appreciated all these responses.

I miss the comments/discussion underneath articles and I absolutely can't stand that beggy message that pops up on the website (I wasn't keen on the Mumsnet one either when they decided to make that a thing).

I'd forgotten about the Guardian's reporting of the Cologne attacks.

Villagetoraiseachild · 26/03/2023 21:36

Agree@GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat with the beggy message. I am one of their top global readers, apparently, mainly gardening, environment etc definitely none of their misogynist or woke lala.
I used to feel slightly guilty a long time ago and considered a regular contribution, but I got over it.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/03/2023 22:09

*derailing, autocorrect

Same, Village. I'm glad I didn't fall for it. When they first launched their appeal I was under the impression they were keeping their head above water but at the same time had strong financial backers.

If your business model isn't working in the current climate it's a shame but I'm not sure crowdfunding is appropriate. It's not a charity.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/03/2023 22:13

(I appreciate it's free to access on which case consider moving to a pay-to-view model, increase advertising revenue accordingly and/or further trim the fat. Presumably they know they wouldn't make anywhere near enough on a subscription-only access model).

Ohnohedident · 27/03/2023 10:47

Its a propaganda organ, no way will they ever go subscription (unfortunately🙁)

RoyalCorgi · 27/03/2023 10:53

I think of late that the reporting by the UK operation of gender issues has improved slightly. It's not great, but it's better than it was, starting from a very low bar obviously.

But this report is by staff in New Zealand and it's clear that, as with the US office, they have given up all pretence to impartial reporting of this issue or even doing the bare minimum of journalistic investigation. This seems to be par for the course with NZ media in general - the examples in Andrew Doyle's GB News item yesterday demonstrated this perfectly.

Not making excuses for the Guardian (all offices should be held to the same standard), more an observation.
