Starmer rowing back on self ID - what do we think?

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 23/03/2023 13:18

The Times is reporting in its live politics feed that KS has explicitly said Labour will not push for self ID without public backing. I know not everyone can access their content so here is a copied n pasted version: what do you think?

Sir Keir Starmer has shifted Labour’s position on transgender rights as he said the bitter rows over Scotland’s Gender Recognition Bill showed the party must consider public opinion on the issue. The leader of the Labour Party has previously insisted it was committed to updating the Gender Recognition Act to introduce self-identification for transgender people. However, in a significant shift in Labour’s policy, he said the backlash over the SNP’s gender reform bill had made him think again. The SNP passed legislation this year that would make it significantly easier for people to acquire a gender recognition certificate and reduced the minimum age for doing so to 16. The bill was blocked by the UK government.Starmer said: “I think that if we reflect on what’s happened in Scotland, the lesson I take from that is that if you’re going to make reforms, you have to carry the public with you.

“And I think that’s a very important message and I think that’s why it’s clear that in Scotland, there should be a reset of the situation.”

I'm someone who has lived through the past 13 years of Tory government and seen the damage its done to women. And now they're playing the at least the Tories know what a woman is card. Again. They've been saying that for years while they've continued with their TRA agenda. It's just more lies.

I'm also someone who's tired of Tory voters blaming everyone else for them voting Tory. Its your vote, your responsibility, own it.

Where do you think everyone else has been for the past 13 years? ( Personally, I live in the city which has had the largest budget cuts of everywhere, and which has stil not recovered from the 1980s)

Why are you assuming that most people vote Conservative, just because they say they cannot vote for Labour at present?

This idea that it is shameful to vote for a legitimate political party or to consider it is simply based on tribal allegiances which tend to portray the tories as inherently evil people. I'm no longer buying it.

Life is complex and there are no easy answers or solutions to any of the many contemporary societal issues we face. Kier starmer has tied himself to a very similar economic plan as the Tories. He's not going to be doing anything radical ( apart fro implemmenting gender SElf ID) and already people where i live have accepted that nothing much will change and their city will get side-lined again. But because he is wearing a red rosette it will at least make them feel ever so slightly better about it.

LittleFingerStrength · 26/03/2023 11:04

Mental health and beliefs in the equality act cover gender identity, AGPs can crack them out at home they don't require extra laws.

I am not voting Labour, they and the womems declaration still want to retain the stupid GRA that encourages insanity, in my opinion, due to gaslighting, I don't want that stupid law at all.

They've changed their mind since 2002. In 2017 Prime Minister Theresa announced their Self ID policy. Since then they've written genderwoo into policies impacting women and girls. Heres an example of what has been recorded in Hansard more recently.

https://debbiehayton.com/2021/03/17/why-does-penny-mordaunt-think-trans-men-are-men/

Our current Conservative TWAW Secretary of State for Education can't even define "girl".

Yes, they have changed tack, and in doing so have made very clear and overt statements of intent; been clear about the integrity of women's sports; have blocked Self ID; ordered the Cass review, and defended Rosie Duffield from her own party.

Thank you for the short list of openly GC Labour MP's.

Opposition parties are vital to the democratic process. If they make themselves unelectable the opposition is enabling a one party state. As the official opposition Labour needs to be electable. Under Corbyn I had the feeling that they preferred playing student politics, booing from the benches rather than making real decisions.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 26/03/2023 11:05

IIRC Boots lives in NI and has no experience of living in a staunchly Labour area that’s never had a non Labour MP and has never had anything but a Labour council and a Labour Mayor.

Voting Labour is not voting for change if you live in say, Liverpool or Manchester.

NotHavingIt · 26/03/2023 11:05

Gillian Keegan has been wisely winding her neck in on the issue because she knows it is not the way that policy is moving.

The Labour party in Liverpool and its Labour run council are a corrupted and incompetent shower; so bad they are currently under government over-sight.

What's happened at Liverpool Council is a great example of absolute power corrupting. Those in power did whatever they wanted, because they knew it didn't matter, the people of Liverpool will vote for them anyway.

Liverpool is a shit show. Joe 'brown envelope' Anderson and his corrupt mates have had power way too long because Liverpool would vote anyone but tories in. They know it and could field a potato with a red rosette and get it elected. The mismanagement is off the scale.
Some things they did right, like not cutting sure start centres,
There is an independent party starting to make waves there though called Liberate Liverpool. The tories will never get Liverpool. The lib dems might, as they have before, but someone left-leaning and palatable needs to stand, I sense the general mood is people are sick of Labour but whether this indy group can grab the votes remains to be seen. Their is loads of tribal voting there.

How did this come about?

I recall them banning 'The sun' and Hillsborough.

Powerful article in the Spectator:
https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-shameful-persecution-of-posie-parker-in-new-zealand/

"It’s a genius initiative. She knows these gatherings of women who merely want to give voice to their profane belief that sex can never be changed will draw out crowds of intolerant trans activists and their allies. She knows the ‘Be Kind’ mob will do everything in its power to stop women from speaking. And she knows it will all brilliantly illustrate her core belief: that trans activism is misogyny in disguise, misogyny in drag, if you like, and that it has devoted itself to silencing women who believe in biology".

The shameful persecution of Posie Parker in New Zealand

This is what it must have been like when women were marched to the stake. Yesterday in Auckland the British women’s rights campaigner Posie Parker found herself surrounded by a deranged, heaving mob. She had tomato soup and placards thrown in her face....

The left are showing us just how linked gender ideology, hatred of women and violence go together.

No chance I want to follow, I hope more women are noticing thanks to LWS event in NZ

Great article.

Brendan O’Neill has published at least three articles defending KJK in various publications over the last few days. I hope he can make room in his podcast schedule for her over the coming days too.
Previous chats between them have been well worth listening to.

Many of those councillors are also avowed 'anti tories' in the Liverpool tradition. Anything suggestive of commerce, or business or businesses making a profit sees them throwing a tantrum. They seem to believe a major city can sustain itself on community bakeries and credit unions. Small minded, insular and anti development; and incompetent and corrupted to boot.

Are you referring to Lawrence Kenwright by any chance? He was one of those that benfitted from the in house deals and general corruption of Joe's administration - but then got upset when he perceived Joe as turning on him - by closing his homeless hostel and sending in Health and Safety to his James street restaurant. He has ruined so many good buildings, and 'rescued' others that should have been demolished.

What we've seen from Posie's tour, especially Auckland, is the perfect example of a population having been gaslit. A literal joint campaign btwn their MSM, politicians and TRAs, to combine to so warp any concept of reality, that these demonstrators think they're hearing Posie say "Lock up the trans, disappear them, exterminate them!"
They LITERALLY think she's a Nazi, of course the comic ironic element being the toytown Nazis who did self-invite themselves.
So, just imagine this, a population so infantilised by lockdown, by the PC witterings of #BeKind and #BeYourself and #TWAW over so many years by wall to wall media and the political class, and a woman unafraid to speak her mind and allow others to do so, is viewed by thousands as an actual threat, an actual facist.
Every week I say that I'm down the rabbit hole with Alice and it can't get any deeper...but it does.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 26/03/2023 12:44

I don’t know much of the backstory of Liverpool but Manchester City Council is a shit show of rolling over and showing it’s belly to overseas property developers who build giant skyscrapers that no normie owner-occupier can get a sniff at due to ‘off plan sales’. It’s hard not to picture brown envelopes being exchanged round the back of the town hall when so many decisions are being made that hurt the residents of the city, destroy community assets and dampen the spirits that made it an interesting and appealing place to live. Live music venues, independent businesses and even Canal Street are in a constant fight for survival - there is very little profit in alcohol sales and it’s nigh on impossible to keep up with the ever increasing rents on city centre retail/hospitality units.

Other Greater Manchester councils/ Salford are more of a mixed bag but like Liverpool, the city council is so overwhelmingly red there is no opposition to anything and thus no functioning democratic process.

There have been previous attempts to pushback against the Labourborg but it’s an enormous task and easy to paint those who
object as secret Tories/right wing cranks (something that anyone vaguely terfy will already be familiar with).

I think the current Tory government are a shitshow but looking at Labour dominant areas such as Manchester, Liverpool and Wales leaves me with the genuine worry that a Labour-Starmer government will be an even bigger shitshow than a Sunek-Tory shitshow.

I'm not sure that Labour are generally any worse than the Tories. Both parties have had corruption scandals and their fair share of MPs who think the rules don't apply to them. The only difference with Labour is that they are more inclined to claim the moral high ground.

I agree.

It’s just irritating to be lectured at re: some supposed moral imperative to vote ‘Tories Out’ when you live somewhere that has never, ever had a Tory IN (and is still plagued with corruption and wasted public funds).

sashagabadon · 26/03/2023 13:32

Agree completely. I live in london in a Tory borough and one of my siblings lives in a Labour borough. Mine is well run, well looked after, streets clean, no potholes, good services, good schools. Theirs is the exact opposite on all measures plus they piss everyone off with parking restrictions, ltn’s everywhere and fines / cameras for even driving down sone streets at certain times of day but where does all this revenue go? Not to fix the potholes anyway.

Andy Burnham literally just got fined for doing 78mph on a stretch of motorway that had been limited to 40mph

I know a speeding fine is a long way from actual corruption but this sort of thing chips away at what’s left of normal people’s respect for politicians.

https://news.sky.com/story/amp/andy-burnham-fined-and-given-six-penalty-points-for-speeding-on-m62-12842562

Aren't you supposed to get an automatic ban if you get caught doing more than 30mph above the limit?
