oh, and total side issue, but it's very easy to spell Varadkar correctly - easier than misspelling it - and doing so leaves him and his with nothing to get snitty about.

It really feckin annoys me that they are conflating ‘intersex’ ie people who disorders of sexual development with trans.

it’s like conflating people born with one leg with foot fetishists

I think the problem is the only people who have been consulted so far are activist organisations who frame any questions as being solely motivated by unthinking bigotry and just pure hatred. This means that they don't accept that problems can exist because there are problems.

Ireland, North and South, has a large, government-funded NGO layer providing lots of nice middle-class jobs for people who always think exactly what is considered fashionable and ‘correct’ to think in their social circle.

This NGO layer exists in Scotland too (as we’ve seen from the consultation and legislative process around the Scottish GRR Bill) and in all 3 jurisdictions (ROI, NI, Scotland) these NGO/activist groups have an outsize influence on government policy. Unlike civil groups such as those representing women and children abused by the church (with state sanction) who get much less of a look-in because they remind people of Old Ireland and the government is all about New Ireland: they want an Ireland that is seen internationally as being more progressive than 'The Brits’, an Ireland that is attractive to Silicon Valley money, an Ireland that sets up Ministers for jobs in Brussels after their political career here winds down, and an Ireland that can keep alive the old tradition of passing on seats in the Dáil to family members 🤷‍♀️ Yes, decades of Irish politics has made me very cynical of Irish politicians and their sexist attitudes towards women as well as their 'jobs for life, jobs for the boys' behaviour.

Apologies to Leo, if he sees this.
A genuine error, not intended to be derogatory.
I will make sure to get it right from here on.

Male people with trans identities should absolutely be better protected from assault in male prisons.

There are a number of ways to meet that need.

None of them need to involve using female prisoners.

ChateauMargaux · 23/03/2023 16:55

It is not possible to compare the rates of sexual assault of trans women in prison to that of natal females in prison because, for the most part, natal females are housed seperately from males to protect them from sexual assualt.

In the case of this prison in Ireland, 100% of the trans prisoners held there have been convicted of sexual assault or threatening to commit sexual assault.

Based on the accounts of the female prisoners shared on this thread, all of the females in the same area of the prison have been subject to sexual harassment from the trans prisoners confined to their cells.

There is a way to protect the trans prisoners and not caused harm to the female prisoners... that is to hold them in a sepwrate area or keep them under 2:1 surveillance in the male estate. The risk does not become zero but fewer females are harmed. ...

and yet.... just hours after the Taoiseach has spoken... trans rights are placed above the rights of natal women.

Mommymoments · 23/03/2023 16:57

At the end of the day we need to get to the stage that if they did the crime they must do the time as per the sex on their birth certificate.
They're arguing he's in solidarity confinement so why can't they have him in a men's prison?

@ChateauMargaux yep you're so right trans rights trumping women's rights. They're not fucking women.

If you change your gender in Ireland, you can get your birth certificate changed. So the birth certificate doesn't really count for anything.

Mommymoments · 23/03/2023 17:14

@iamlookingfor the law needs to be reversed but they won't do it as they all have close personal agendas. They want it all normalised so their loved ones can benefit as the expense of biological women's rights.
Sure Mary Lou McDonald's brother has come out as trans,
Mary Butler junior minister for mental health has a child who is transgender.
The weasel Roderic & Leo are gay, Roderic especially has very close links with trans groups.

StephanieSuperpowers · 23/03/2023 17:23

It's bizarre though. The trans lobby position themselves as the most victimised and marginalised group in the country, with the worst mental health and highest death rates. And people nod in sympathy. The travelling community are right there! They're so marginalised and there's so much prejudice against them that people even forget they exist! The reason money is left over from traveller allocations is because they're shockingly underserved - councils etc don't bother using their funding allocations due to the prejudice against travellers and nobody cares!

Mommymoments · 23/03/2023 17:49

@StephanieSuperpowers the agenda is very clear with Roderic.. The gay politician takes 1.1 million on the sly which was earmarked for very vulnerable groups & then gives to lgbtq groups for their projects.. Most likely all good friends of his too (speculating).. Why wasn't there uproar about this? A big investigation? Why is he still in this position? Anyone trying to oust him will be accused of homophobia.

This was absolutely shocking and it got very little coverage. Roddy should have been pulled up before the public accounts committee.
Could you imagine if it was the other was around and the money was taken from trans organisations? The times and rte would be up in arms over it.
There is no viable opposition in this country.

Mommymoments · 23/03/2023 19:34

@johnnytightlips exactly imagine the protests. We'd never hear the end of it. This was not covered properly either & Roderick was never held accountable. Sinn Féin have been so quiet too. There is no opposition unfortunately. @

Not like Mary Lou to stay silent. Ever.

Mommymoments · 23/03/2023 20:20

@Pseudonamed she has a brother who recently came out as transgender..

The GAA need to act. Look at that man who calls himself a trans woman. Wtf. And he's allowed play on a women's team. Disgusting. Imagine a tackle from him. He's on no hormones, has no surgery. He's a man.

He’s just unisexing his answers - prisoners, prison population - keen to avoid referring to any mention of women or women prisoners 🤬

And I love how he sticks to technicalities by saying violent prisoners don’t mix with general population and no-one’s at risk of violence... He was asked about men, not just violent men. And, as we’ve learned from women incarcerated with men, violence isn’t the only risk: there’s sexual intimidation, inappropriate behaviour, physical intimidation without the need for outright violence, loss of privacy, triggering of past male-violence-related traumas.

He’s undercutting what Varadkar said at the press conference and using answers from the Sturgeon playbook which, sadly, Irish journalists & media will allow him to do.

Mommymoments · 24/03/2023 14:16

State funded censorship.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 24/03/2023 14:21

As I said earlier on the womens rights general conversations thread, this morning's RTÉ radio was very depressing listening - murdered women, falsely accused women (historic, but giving me very vivid flashbacks to hearing the horror roll out day after day), women (who probably shouldn't be in prison anyway) banged up with violent men and the reactions and lack thereof (not just from Harris) to that, the station's reporting on the World Athletics ruling. The only bright spots were Graham Dwyer still in prison and a medical consultant stating that women are a real thing and need appropriate treatment.
