Labour ‘must fix its trans stance to win the next election’ - party needs to clarify its policies to be closer to the public’s views on the debate

Labour is trying to position itself as the party of the centre-ground of British politics. It has identified middle-aged, suburban women as a target demographic to win over ahead of the general election.

Labour strategists have studied polling that shows how a gender gap in voting has emerged since 2010, whereby women are on average more likely to vote Labour.

But the polling notes that Labour’s advantage is “specifically among women under 50”, while the Tories lead in women over 50.

It comes as a network of Labour activists and staffers prepares to relaunch itself next month as a think tank that will produce monthly reports on how the party can appeal to its target voters.

The organisation, called Labour Together, aims to come up with a raft of policy recommendations that reposition the party as “socially to the Right and economically to the Left”.

This made me laugh like a drain!

Josh Simons said: that unlike during the Jeremy Corbyn era, Labour is no longer seen as a “patronising bunch of liberal Londoners who know nothing about people's lives”.

Oh dear...... 😂

Sausagenbacon · 20/03/2023 07:32

Labour still have a long way to go, judging by the responses to A. Dodd's tweets.

Musomama1 · 20/03/2023 07:34

I'm in my 30s Labour... I think you'll find TWAW a minority belief and perhaps only particularly virulent in students.

BabyStopCryin · 20/03/2023 07:37

Too little too late.

Thread containing many of the foolish to outright stupid things Labour MPs have said on this issue. There would need to be a lots of clarification, distancing from previous statements and U turns.

Raineth · 20/03/2023 07:40

I’m really uncomfortable with Labour trying to work out whatever it is women want to hear so they can trick us into voting for them.

Then they’ll go straight back to doing whatever it is they actually want to do.

Aren’t politicians supposed to tell us what they passionately believe is right, and we vote for them if we agree?

Clymene · 20/03/2023 07:41

happinessischocolate · 20/03/2023 07:01

I don't understand the obsession with Labour having to get this right in order to win an election, when it's the past 13 years under tories that have got us where we are now.

And I don't support Labour as it currently stands under Starmer.

Simply because the tories have rowed back from self ID. Labour hasn't

TheirEminence · 20/03/2023 07:44

Agree with other posters that there have been too many outrageous statements from Labour and that it will take a long time to rebuild trust. Not just Starmer and Rayner (‘my trans sisters’) but also Whittome, Sultana, Butler, Lammy, Allin-Khan, Thornberry and many, many more. Things that come to mind are a bunch of Labour MPs doing a silly dance with trans flags in Westminster, Eddie Izzard being seriously considered as candidate material, ‘dinosaurs’ Lammy thinking TW have a cervix etc. etc.

This is a serious political issue, with a global dimension, affecting everyone, and they’re not doing their homework while thinking we’re silly old ladies getting our knickers in a twist over nothing. I’ve done my homework, for years now, and I’m angry at being patronised. Even angrier than at ‘calm down dear’ David Cameron. They’ve finally realised that this is an important matter NOW, in March 2023? At least five years too late.

I’m not a ‘woman over 50’ (what is this category - the ‘scrap heap female’??) and I despise these craven cowards. Actually, a lot of them do not seem to be cowards but arrogant sadists who enjoy putting others in their place.

When it comes to the next general election, regardless of the views of many on this forum, it will not be the reason why most people decide to vote or not vote.

I see this a lot from Labour supporters I presume.

We’ll see. Looking at recent events gender ideology has a knack of landing results.

The whole NS mess was in sync with many on this forum.

Absolutely this, it’s certainly not the reason that I wouldn’t vote for them.

Ttwinkletoes · 20/03/2023 07:51

I don’t trust them on immigration - if they pander to the kind lefties were stuffed

SallyLockheart · 20/03/2023 07:57

any politician who says with a straight face that "a woman can have a penis" can't be expected to be believed on anything they say.

Brokendaughter · 20/03/2023 07:59

I cannot think of anything that Labour could possibly do to make me believe they wouldn't be straight back to pandering to gender ideologists the second they got into power no matter what they say now.

It will be only words & they have already said loud & clear that biological women can fuck right off if they won't help validate men who want to take what little used to belong to women (our language, our spaces, our jobs).

Their actions have been to destroy women, to hand womens jobs to men within their own party, to leave their own MPs unsupported while attacked for the crime of being genuinely female & standing up for the rights of females.

I think every single one of the corrupt lot would have to be thrown out of the party & a new lot of GC members who took action to protect the rights of women would need to take over for a few years before I would even consider a word they say.

True, but elections aren’t won by the way “most people” vote. They’re won by a small number of swing voters, and people have very strong opinions on this issue, certainly enough to affect their ballot.
Having said that, there are other issues that equally elicit strong responses, so it depends how it ties in with those.

Abccde · 20/03/2023 08:02

We have got to the silly place we are in today under a Tory government.

We do need a change of government. This is not the only issue and we have had a number of years of very very poor government that has cost all of us an awful lot.

The only way to get a change of government is to vote Labour.

I can't say I am over enthusiastic at the idea, but as long as they don't bring in Self id in the next parliament, women can continue to fight and bring light to the situation.

I do hope that the ECHR do clarify the EA before the next election.

TodayInahurry · 20/03/2023 08:15

Labour and Starmer and untrustworthy. They also have many unpleasant MPs, was it Nandy who said something like ‘silly white girls need to shut up about rape gangs for the sake of diversity’. And the appalling refusal to stand up to defend the Batley teacher and abused woman in the Korangate scandal, in their constituencies.

won’t vote for them. Having said that my female Tory MP is also useless and I am not sure where she stands on the whole trans evil

Alltheprettyseahorses · 20/03/2023 08:16

Labour can try to backtrack all they like. They've already fallen for one batshit and downright dangerous ideology. They'll equally fall for another if their kids and SPADs get into it.

Floisme · 20/03/2023 08:25

It's a start as far as I'm concerned, nothing more and nothing less. If they want my vote they've still got a long way to go and about 18 months to get there. I'll watch and I'll wait but I won't be lifting a finger to help them - they've got to work this out on their own.

QuertyGirl · 20/03/2023 08:30

I'm more bothered having a functioning state infrastructure than any other issue.

Raineth · 20/03/2023 08:35

nilsmousehammer · 20/03/2023 07:17

So some SPAD has gone:

Ok guys. To win an election our survey says we have to pretend to be interested in x.

Yes, we know nothing about x, and we don't even agree with it, but this is where we fake it. Marketing. It's all about marketing.

And then once we're in power, we then do what we want cos they can't do anything for 5 years and manifestos aren't binding or anything like that.

What about representing the electorate and our voters?

Don't be silly, it's about doing to them what we know is good for them, not about democracy or anything.

What @nilsmousehammer said.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 20/03/2023 04:20

Well Labour are in in Wales and we have Eluned Morgan who thinks trans women are women as the head of Health and Education. Worryingly for women in Wales.

Well, the Conservatives are in Government and we have Gillian Keegan who thinks trans women are women as Secretary of State for Education. Worryingly for women in the UK.

7Worfs · 20/03/2023 08:45

We have got to the silly place we are in today under a Tory government.

Yes and no.
The infiltration and institutional capture began decades ago, alongside powerful propaganda and social engineering.
The few who knew what’s up were branded dinosaurs, pearl-clutches etc and sneered at. Progressivism and extreme social liberalism became the new religion.

The Tories’ fault is that they shifted too much to the left on social issues and were underestimating the undercurrents until very recently.

AlisonDonut · 20/03/2023 08:54

I'd love to know if they are still keeping their list of women who think bad thoughts.

I presume so, as Karen Ingala Smith wasn't allowed to join.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 20/03/2023 08:55

It was only a few weeks ago that Rosie Duffield was being abused by her own colleagues, and Starmer did nothing. How stupid does he think we are?
