Equality Act - what next?

The petition to look at this seems sadly to have virtually ground to a halt:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/petitions_noticeboard/4722618-petition-to-update-the-equality-act-thread-2

Government have responded with a dismissive:

'providers are already able to restrict the use of spaces/services on the basis of sex and/or gender reassignment where justified. Further clarification is not necessary.'

What next?

We know that providers, while technically able to exclude males, just do not and will not. Nobody seems to agree on or understand the law fully. Legal experts get in huge tangles arguing about it.

The current situation means women are excluded from many women's spaces, there is no provision for single sex services apart from Beira's Place in Scotland, there are still males in women's prisons, and in hospitals.

What do we do if the government and EHRC won't listen? Whatever the law says, this situation is untenable.

There could be a little bullet-point thing explaining.

”currently there is confusion in the Equality Act over whether providers of sports, hospitals, changing rooms, shared hostels and over-night sleeper trains, are allowed to keep men out of women’s provision”
”this means many services for women are scared to protect women from male predators, because they are worried they will be breaking the law”
”right now, women and girls have no guarantee that ‘single sex’ means truly single sex”
”Women and girls have already been sexually assaulted and raped in single sex hospital wards, prisons and toilets by men”
”Sign this petition to update the equality act to make it clear that ‘sex’ in the Equality Act means biological sex and not ‘any man who calls himself a woman”.

Well summarised. Can't be much clearer than that.

@Boiledbeetle please would you capture some screen shots of when this petition is ever actually showing up on ‘Active’ and what page it’s on?

85,383 signatures

Looks around screen notices a button I've never pressed...Ooh so that's what that one does.

I shall add it to my petition things to randomly check.

Goes back off to discover the delights of the active button.

Boiledbeetle · 06/03/2023 01:41

Ask and I shall deliver @ScrollingLeaves 👇straight after I listed top of the list

Equality Act - what next?
Boiledbeetle · 06/03/2023 01:46

And just checked again it had already dropped to about 11 down the page even at this time of night.

Equality Act - what next?
ScrollingLeaves · 06/03/2023 01:56

Thank you Boiledbeetle
Now I have just posted again on the ‘Petitions and Activism’ thread 2.

Let’s see if it’s there.

ScrollingLeaves · 06/03/2023 02:00

No it isn’t.

“The Petition to update the Equality Act -thread 2” which is on Petitions and Activism is not in Active even though I only just reposted.

ArabellaScott · 06/03/2023 07:38

ArabellaScott · 06/03/2023 07:38

What number are we aiming for today?

Well it's On 85,411 signatures so 85750?

Boiledbeetle · 06/03/2023 07:54

Or is that to ambitious on a cold damp Monday morning?

Boiledbeetle · 06/03/2023 08:01

@ScrollingLeaves OK yeah this is strange. This thread no petition in title and on FWR appears in Active. The other with the word Petition and in the petition section does not appear in the active. So is it the board they are posted on that determines it? Our does it not show threads with certain words?

MenopausalMe · 06/03/2023 08:51

This petition was going well during the Isla Reynolds new cycle guess we need a final push out to our networks

Boiledbeetle · 06/03/2023 09:38

Currently at 85,447 signatures

Boiledbeetle · 06/03/2023 10:35

IcakethereforeIam · 06/03/2023 11:43

I've put a link on this thread in AIBU, it's very pertinent to the petition. Could others visit it, make a contribution and repost the petition link?

IcakethereforeIam · 06/03/2023 12:04

What have Asda done that's egregious twaw, there's a thread I can post on but I need an angle.

ArabellaScott · 06/03/2023 12:06

ASDA did that 'love has no age' campaign, iirc, that Baroness Nicholson got involved in?

I knew there'd be something. I noticed you beat me too it so I posted a link to an AIBU diversity inclusion and referred back to the petition link just above my post.

Boiledbeetle · 06/03/2023 13:05

Nearly at a half thousand marker 85,494 signatures

ScrollingLeaves · 06/03/2023 13:13

I reported the ‘Petition to update the Equality Act - thread 2’ which is on the ‘Petition’ board to say it isn’t showing up in ‘Active’.

This has meant a huge waste of time and untold signatures not gained probably.

Boiledbeetle · 06/03/2023 13:33

@ScrollingLeaves I've just posted on both. I did this one first then the other one in petitions. So the petition board one should be above this one right? Wrong. It's not there
