I work in the legal system and agree with you 100% on the threat of male violence towards women. But you can be concerned about that and also kind to trans kids and their families. That doesn’t mean allowing rapists into prisons but it means can we not navigate this issue with some empathy, on both sides and stop fuelling the hatred? How is that a controversial thing to say?

Women were told that their concerns 'weren't valid' and that 'rights aren't a pie'. This has been repeated ad nauseum along with the chilling scream of 'bigot!!!'. The mere suggestion that there needed to be a careful balancing of rights was met with memes of 'shut the fuck up terf'. Women were sent death threats for pointing out that letting all males into single sex female spaces was a recipe for disaster. Women consistently pointed out that the Tavistock and Sandyford clinics were doing worrying practices and pointed out that the 3000% rise in teenage girls identifying as boys should be investigated before they were unquestioningly directed towards medical transition - they were told to 'fuck off and die'.

'Bad as both sides' won't wash.

The re-writing of history won't wash.

Ah the glory days of Sturgeon, eh?

Really??! Why are you posting in a Swedish accent?

😃

What's the relevance of this question? Sturgeon was trying to change national law by the back door; her going affects all the UK.

Little OJ has added the ponderous weight of his opinion...

First he tweeted that trans activists had toppled one of the most successful female leaders of all time.

then he deleted that

and wrote a panegyric of NS, finishing with the words "History will be kind to her".

I honestly don't understand OJ's obsession with making predictions about how history will regard the present day, like some tinpot Nostradamus. but as ever, he's reliably wrong.

😄

@BellaAmorosa maybe it was here though I thought I read it in The Times...will keep looking:

Well, msps stood alongside trans protesters waving placards about decapitating terfs. I'd say that was evidence of trans zealotry. To
threaten the bulk of female voters is a very unpolitician-like thing to do.
The problem now facing the SNP is that they are a Parliament of amateurs, talentless.and thoughtless. They wouldn't even agree to ban sex offenders from gaining a GRA and the right to enter women's spaces. They really are unhinged on this with a few honourable exceptions.

Ah. So high likelihood. But then possibly equally high likelihood of being ousted next election?

BellaAmorosa · 15/02/2023 18:27

@ResisterRex
Thank you

Delphinium20 · 15/02/2023 18:30

It was a NYTimes notification as well - their second paragraph mentions the rapist and the gender ID as being a factor.

Well done, vipers. May I also note that despite doing the exact same as Sturgeon, we aren't seeing Biden or Trudeau capitulating, are we? Despite how she turned her back on women, it hurts to see a woman punished more than a man.

Just thought I should mention the honourable exceptions in the SNP who defied the whip -

Ash Regan, Stephanie Callaghan, Annabelle Ewing, Fergus Ewing, Jim Fairlie, Kenny Gibson, Ruth Maguire, John Mason and Michelle Thomson.

From Scottish Labour (who were also whipped), the honourable exceptions were - Claire Baker and Carol Mochan

According to The Guardian:

People working in the equalities sector acknowledge that Sturgeon stepping down will mark a significant change, and there is initial unease and nervousness about what and who comes next, particularly with the UK Conservatives expected to fight the next general election on culture war territory. All underline that Sturgeon’s commitment to LGBT+ rights was wholly genuine and appreciated, and it is certainly that case that of all possible leadership contenders, none are as unapologetic in their support or as engaged in the detail as Sturgeon has been.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/feb/15/nicola-sturgeon-resignation-why-now-and-what-happens-next-on-key-issues

"[E]ngaged n the detail"? Yeah, right!

senua · 15/02/2023 18:34

People working in the equalities sector
The what?

BellaAmorosa · 15/02/2023 18:35

@ResisterRex
That looks shockingly bad. I wonder if Keir Starmer has made promises to a genderwoo backer or two and that is why he doesn't seem to care about losing women members and is so keen on self-ID? He certainly doesn't strike me as the true believer type, more someone who has calculated that throwing women under the bus will be worth it to keep his party afloat.

SinnerBoy · 15/02/2023 18:36

All underline that Sturgeon’s commitment to LGBT+ rights was wholly genuine...

So, being in thrall to the Green loons and voting down an amendment to protect women in prisons, from violent and predatory men now counts as "genuine." I see, who wrote the article, Humpty Dumpty?

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/02/2023 18:36

There's loads of scots on here - many names I recognise from old indy threads. The assumption that if you don't like the SNP you're not Scottish always entertains though.

I'm not a fan of the SNP because they're mostly a bunch of dimwitted fucknuggets.

Once upon a time there was an Empress called Nicola. She felt a bit sad because she had great ambitions but her popularity was beginning to wane. One day some weavers, dressed in Green, arrived at court and said that they could weave her a special cloth out of which a special suit could be made. The suit was so special that if she wore it, the people would love her again. The suit was called 'Some men are women and some women are men'. The weavers let it be known that only the progressive liberal people could see the suit and that everyone would love Nicola for being so amazingly liberal and progressive! To anyone who was a bigot, it would be invisible. Nicola felt great anticipation, but when she looked at the suit, she could not see it. With horror she realised that she must be a bigot. She resolved to lie and wear the suit because it seemed that everyone around her could, indeed see it. Nicola proudly dressed in her new outfit. She paraded it loudly and clearly; 'Some men are women, some women are men! Everyone is who they say they are!' She shouted down the bigots who could not see this new truth and hoped that she would appear as liberal and progressive as all of the amazing people around her. Then a rapist declared that he too was a woman and everyone saw that the suit was a lie. Nicola was naked. She could not speak the truth - the words; Isla Bryson is a man' could not come out of her mouth. All the people around her who had said they could see the suit slunk away and she was left with only those she had called bigots, laughing at her. Nicola knew that her dreams of being special had disintegrated and that no one would ever again believe a single word she said about anything so she resigned.

Not many ! Probably don’t even live in Scotland or have any idea of what Scotland is truly like

I'm in Scotland. I even used to like Sturgeon but how the scales fell from my eyes.

ArabellaScott · 15/02/2023 18:45

I don't think I've ever liked her. She was my MSP and she was useless. But I did admire her political performance, for a while.

I am, though I live in England now. My parents were SNP members and one of them was an enthusiastic envelope-stuffer for the party at local level, but they resigned last year over the GRR.

Interesting re: NYT!

I don’t disagree that it’s hard to witness disproportionate punishment meted out to women but ultimately the real reason it’s easier to topple Sturgeon than Trudeau or Biden is likely to be population size.

Scotland is 5.5 mill to Canada’s 39 mill to USA 330 mill.
It’s just easier to capsize a small boat than a big one.

I think it’s just another avenue to shut down criticism or dismiss it.

if you don’t worship at the alter of Sturgeon then you must be English/hate powerful women/a Tory/a bigot/unkind… and so on and so on.

Because it would be anathema to accept that many people - Scots and non-Scots, in Scotland and outside it - have legitimate criticisms of Sturgeon based on her actions and the outcomes of her government over nearly a decade now. Not because of anything other than that.

Delphinium20 · 15/02/2023 18:54

@CryptoFascistMadameCholet good point. You're absolutely right. Most people voted for Biden because there were so many other factors that made him preferable over Trump.

Let's hope Sturgeon's fall will wake up other countries.

Scottish, living in Scotland.
Glad to see the back of her.
