You may disagree with her but she is trying to get this difficult issue right. A teenager trans girl was murdered this week. Isn’t it time to take some of the heat and the hatred out of this debate and focus on being kind and treating people with dignity?

Isn’t trying to link our reasonable position that people should be free to live their lives as they choose, but in certain situations sex matters and that needs to be respected, with the appalling murder of a young person, introducing hate into the debate?

I’d love to see a tiny % of the anger here towards NS for the decision with prisons towards the Tory party for the shambles they have created with the court system which means rapists aren’t prosecuted and the Met Police are a disgrace. That’s a far bigger threat to women than trans people are.

I'm in Scotland, the Met police, while clearly awful, are not my priority. Nor are they anything to do with Nicola Sturgeon's success or failure as First Minister, frankly.

Brilliant news. She has done a lot of damage to women's and children's rights and has not helped trans identifying individuals one iota. And lets not talk about her finances and what she did to Alex Salmond. She's dodgy as.

Iceysuperslide · 15/02/2023 14:22

She has been forced out before being ousted it’s better for the actual survival of the SNP. If you are against independence then actually it’s a bad day as she was destroying them from within.

ArabellaScott · 15/02/2023 14:22

www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2023/02/nicola-sturgeon-used-and-discarded/

'The main cause of bad government performance was Sturgeon’s compulsion to sideline all people of real talent in the SNP, and surround herself only with the extremely mediocre, who would never challenge her.'

ArabellaScott · 15/02/2023 14:24

That is a very interesting article.

I hate it when people feel the need to name call

I do too, and if she hadn't felt the need to call people like me racists, homophobes and transphobes then I'd feel less inclined to call her names back. Just as well she resigned, she was losing the plot towards the end. Though I did enormously admire her performance not using any pronouns at all for Isla Bryson and sticking to "the individual" and "the rapist". I couldn't have done it!

Are you aware that the nature of the corroboration law in Scotland makes it significantly harder to get a conviction for rape than under English law?

I would entirely agree that its a shambles in England and Wales but even with a functioning court system Scottish law puts higher barriers to justice for victims.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 15/02/2023 14:31

Just adding this quote from the Cheshire police statement - please don’t bring Brianna’s tragic death up in a thread about Nicola Sturgeon’s resignation.
It’s disrespectful to Brianna’s family and could undermine the justice process.

Just hope it's not John Swinney as the next First Minister.

As for the SNP, in general they are the best argument against Scottish independence.

James Kirkup in The Spectator.

@CryptoFascistMadameCholet
Timely reminder.

ILikeDungs · 15/02/2023 14:41

It's just such poetic justice though.

NS forced the GR Reform Bill through just as fast as ever she could, but not so fast that she didn't make sure to squelch the "maybe don't let rapists self-id when being sent to prison" amendment.

And then a rapist went to a women's prison.

And within weeks of the bill passing, she is out. Weeks! Glorious.

I do not think the GRR bill and her resigning are unrelated.

ScissorsPaperStone · 15/02/2023 14:46

giggly · 15/02/2023 14:00

This! From presumably majority of woman.
The GR bill was the only sticking point for me.
she led Scotland through COVID in an a way that Labour and Tories could only dream of.
I hate it when people feel the need to
name call and comment on her appearance.

She "led Scotland through COVID" by doing things a week or two after Boris and having more gravitas in her delivery than BJ. (Let's face it, Mr Tumble has more gravitas than Boris).

Same mistakes were made with care homes and not locking down early enough/too harsh locking down (depending on your viewpoint). And as for the hush up over the Nike conference in Feb in Edinburgh.

I suppose she also managed not to have piss-ups with her staff in the middle of lockdowns. But it's not a high bar to clear, is it?

ILikeDungs · 15/02/2023 14:46

James Kirkup:

"How did the most astute and sure-footed politician in Britain manage to trip over on self-ID and end up stammering over the rights of a rapist such as Isla Bryson? I suspect the relatively small scale of Scottish politics plays a part. It’s not a big country and its political class is equally modest. Years of SNP rule in Edinburgh has meanwhile reinforced the walls of a small and insular settlement made up of left-leaning public bodies, charities, campaign groups and other lobbyists, most of them wary of breaking the progressive consensus and offending the party’s ruling cadres. In other words, Scottish politics was easy to capture."

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 15/02/2023 14:47

It's a day for joyous celebrating across Scotland. The child sterilising conveyor belts in the Sandyford clinic is being shut down, and the woman who blocked amendments to keep male sex criminals out of women's prisons has resigned.

Can we start hoping that other politicians will take heed, and curb the instincts that have been leading them down the path towards destroying women's rights and child safeguarding.

OntarioBagnet · 15/02/2023 14:48

Good. She’s no feminist and caused no end of harm to women.

I think Sturgeon did use 'her' to refer to Bryson. At a press conference Sturgeon said 'My comments about her, eh the person being a rapist'. Also, at the same press conference Sturgeon said that Bryson 'regards 'herself' as a woman'. Then when asked about that one minute later said that she couldn't remember and that would take the reporter's word for it.

Not at all sorry to see her go, and I hope it brings some improvement for women's rights in Scotland, but Alex Salmond is hardly a knight in shining armour.
