I’d love to see a tiny % of the anger here towards NS for the decision with prisons towards the Tory party for the shambles they have created with the court system which means rapists aren’t prosecuted and the Met Police are a disgrace. That’s a far bigger threat to women than trans people are.

They are two separate issues and I am perfectly capable of being frustrated, annoyed and saddened by both of them in equal measure but this is a thread about NS.

The link between the issues is the fact that society does not value women and their safety. Women are only to be given the rights that men feel they should have. If what we want as women impinges on what men want for themselves women are to be ridiculed, ignored, threatened and even harmed. NS with her GRR completely undermined the safety of women and ignored their voices that is why people feel so strongly. If women won't protect women then what chance do we have against the institutionalised misogyny of the Met?

ArabellaScott · 15/02/2023 13:58

hongkongmum · 15/02/2023 13:31

You may disagree with her but she is trying to get this difficult issue right. A teenager trans girl was murdered this week. Isn’t it time to take some of the heat and the hatred out of this debate and focus on being kind and treating people with dignity?

Are you suggesting we don't question politicians or criticise them in case it prompts violent crime, because that would be a really odd take.

Do women in prison count as people?

That's a shame. I think she's great.

Appalled at the misogynist vibe on here calling her a witch etc.

This! From presumably majority of woman.
The GR bill was the only sticking point for me.
she led Scotland through COVID in an a way that Labour and Tories could only dream of.
I hate it when people feel the need to
name call and comment on her appearance.

FrostyFifi · 15/02/2023 14:00

If the dream was the long-term destruction of business and the economy then yes she certainly did.

She was trying to get this difficult issue right for one group of people, and seriously messing up another group in the process.

If she was truly sincere in "getting it right" she would have also listened to women's groups. She pointedly ignored input from women, when it accidentally occurred.

And please, less of the "hate". I don't hate, goddammit.

SinnerBoy · 15/02/2023 14:01

I don't think that anyone here has criticised her appearance, although I'm happy to be corrected?

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 15/02/2023 14:02

For those praising her achievements - I may have posted this already (poor quality, but the direction of travel is clear) :

I’m Scottish, criminal justice is a devolved issue, and we have our own issues with the prosecution of rapists to be angry at NS for, along with many other issues outwith the trans shambles. But she absolutely nailed her colours to the trans mask, and it’s cost her her job.

Its not hateful to say that people can’t change their biological sex.

ILikeDungs · 15/02/2023 14:02

hongkongmum · 15/02/2023 13:41

So be better than them. When you make hateful comments the hatful people don’t hear it. The trans kids do and your kids so and it creates more and more fear and hatred.

Show me these hateful comments please

The reason we are so angry with NS is because we are (majority) centre lefties and Nicola Sturgeon claimed to be a feminist!
Tories are doing exactly what we expect of them re: Women’s rights, ie, fuck all, whereas Sturgeon said thing while doing the opposite.
Also, wrong section of the site. Do a site wide search for the ‘The Met’ and you’ll find plenty of anger.

I’d check the style section before making such a bold statement - the Mumsnetters over there are brutal.

Firstly, trans women aren’t the threat, men are. Men are potential threats regardless of any other characteristic they have, including gender identity. That is why all men need to be kept out. If you haven’t understood that our argument is about the threat men present, you haven’t understood our position at all.

Secondly, this issue matters so much as at its heart it is about whether or not our society regards women and girls as being entitled to the most basic human rights. If women can be locked up with men, required to share bedrooms and sleeping space with men, required to get undressed in front of men ( as the young women on the beauty course with the rapist Isla were), required to discuss sexual trauma in front of men, and even more than that, are shamed and ostracized if they refuse, then women and girls are not regarded as being entitled to the most basic human rights and dignity. And if we aren’t seen as worthy of that, we can never be equal or advance our rights in society.

This debate is essentially one over the worth, and level of humanity, that women and girls are seen as having in society. That is why it is so crucial.

You would see that anger and women fighting to redress it going on every day if you were not just copying from the trans ally manual.

Go and look for yourself. Research instead of just following.

You might start with the trans baby rapist who said he wanted to be in a women's prison with a mother and baby unit and they let him to be kind to him.

Some murderers that SNP policies were "kind" to. Not the women, mind:

Four of five trans inmates in women’s prisons are murderers

ArabellaScott · 15/02/2023 14:17

I just noted in her speech she addresses 'all the people of Scotland, whether you voted for me, or not'

FFS, Nicola. People voted for MSPs or for a party. Other than the people of Pollokshields, they weren't voting for you.

scratchedbymycat · 15/02/2023 14:17

Topsyturvy78 · 15/02/2023 12:52

Am I the only one on here that likes her? She's not our PM but she was great during the pandemic. I would have swapped her for BoJo anyday. Couldn't have worse

I always felt that her COVID responses had more to do with what Westminster was or wasn't doing to try and trying to show them up. Just as the GRR bill was seized on as an example of how 'oppressed' Scotland is. It's always always about Independence. That's the Number 1 priority over things like jobs, health, education, rights anything. For that reason, I'm glad she's gone. And I hope her absence weakens the party, the SNP loses seats, and Scotland can get back to actually focussing on issues that matter.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 15/02/2023 14:18

She led Scotland through COVID in an a way that Labour and Tories could only dream of

While I'm not a member of either party, I really doubt many people in either wish they'd had harsher and longer restrictions than elsewhere in the UK for similarly bad outcomes.

Darnley · 15/02/2023 14:18

Yaaaaay.
