All newly remanded/convicted prisoners will be held in a jail that aligns with their SEX at birth

Wow, really?

Madcats · 09/02/2023 17:34

Just in time for Andrew Millar/Amy George. I bet he regrets having that manicure now:

DisforDarkChocolate · 09/02/2023 17:34

And the ones already in prison?

SanRaz1 · 09/02/2023 17:35

😂

Madcats · 09/02/2023 17:36

The announcement was on R4 PM at about 5:30pm. There were some weasel words (and the question wasn't asked). My hunch is that the blokes in women's prisons will be staying put until people kick up enough fuss.

Clymene · 09/02/2023 17:36

I just started a thread.

Apparently it's a temporary measure.

What an absolute fucking shit show. And we know there's an issue in other countries with self ID but they're just not disclosing it.

Well that wasn’t quite how the Evan Davies show announced it. “Gender at birth” was doing a lot of heavy lifting and there was a mention of the rapist case with a lot of “she” and “she transitioned after being charged” (with no attempt to clarify what “transitioned” might actually mean in this case).

I think Evan and the BBC Scotland correspondent are just too embarrassed to say “sex”

SanRaz1 · 09/02/2023 17:38

Madcats…your pedicure comment made me lol

lanadelgrey · 09/02/2023 17:39

Should some on Twitter mention that it is Sex to Evan? I’m not

StephanieSuperpowers · 09/02/2023 17:44

The sheer bigotry. I hope they get demonstrated at.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/02/2023 17:47

Sorry Clymene didn't see your thread. I'm sure I heard the word 'sex' mentioned? Anyway, good news. Even if it's supposedly temporary.

And, even for believers of the ideology, how can anyone have a gender at birth?

OP posts:
guinnessguzzler · 09/02/2023 17:50

And how does that fit with the proposals in the GRR Bill?

Madcats · 09/02/2023 17:52

Neil Nunes has just confirmed that it will affect "new" blokes convicted or remanded in custody, again saying "gender at birth".

Ramblingnamechanger · 09/02/2023 17:55

Definitely gender not sex. Sounded very confused when talking about ..er..women’s prisons. Sounded as though it’s temporary while bigger review happening. Nobody knows how to report this stuff now!

Clymene · 09/02/2023 18:01

No, no, I think yours was first! Sorry I'm really bad at typing half a line and expecting other women to somehow be mystic Meg today and figure out the rest of it.

Someone made a very good point on my thread though. If they have a GRC, does that mean they'll be put in a women's prison?

ResisterRex · 09/02/2023 18:02

I rewound it. Evan Davies did say "align with their gender at birth". The correspondent said if you're a transwoman, you'll be held in a male jail. And it's for new convicts.

ResisterRex · 09/02/2023 18:05

"Until there's a much wider a review...No newly convicted or newly remanded transgender prisoner will be held in the jail which aligns with their transgender identities. So it is a big change albeit, as far as we understand it, it will be temporary for the time being"

^^
The correspondent.

DrBlackbird · 09/02/2023 18:06

Maybe saying gender at birth rather than sex at birth is the concession to the trans community? Trying to preempt criticism.

ResisterRex · 09/02/2023 18:08

Looks like there was something not cleared:

twitter.com/jgbs/status/1623745324819836932?s=46&t=aRdJ8vbnh_hn32YdPk9sWA

"The justice scretary, Keith Brown, has now clarified that newly convicted or remanded transgender prisoners will be sent to establishments which are in line with their gender at birth FOR ASSESSMENT.

So not necessarily for the whole period of their sentence.

Until these reviews are complete any transgender person in custody who has a history of violence against women – including sexual offences will not be relocated from the male to female estate. Additionally, any newly convicted or remanded transgender prisoner will initially be placed in an establishment commensurate with their birth gender.

Also from that:

"at no point were any of the women in the care of the prison service at risk of harm"

IN THE CARE OF

No mention of the officers or staff.

Baldieheid · 09/02/2023 18:17

Trans offenders will INITIALLY be placed according to their birth sex.

We need that to be permanent.

Watertight, no exceptions, special facilities in the male estate should that be required. Just like the other "vulnerable" men

Is it not just coyness ?

We can't be mentioning sex on the radio

Brokendaughter · 09/02/2023 18:22

So what does this mean?

There is no such thing as gender, so are they just going to let all transcriminals go because we don't have any gendered prisons?

We only have the ones which are sex based & those obviously won't do.

How can the SPS say that women weren't harmed when we have the testimony of the female prisoner Amanda, who took the unwanted measure of getting a coil fitted to protect herself from the people with erect penises exposed, who she was forced to share a communal shower area with?

Amanda also said other women just didn't take a shower because they were so fearful. The harm has already happened to those female prisoners.
