All newly remanded/convicted prisoners will be held in a jail that aligns with their SEX at birth

I'm pretty certain the female reporter on the later Reporting Scotland said "sex registered at birth".

Madcats · 10/02/2023 08:58

Did you happen to catch what Nick Robinson's podcast (with the Chair of Stonewall) is called?

NR said they would be discussing Isla Bryson case.

I do wish the journos had asked about the butcher too.

DontAskIDontKnow · 10/02/2023 09:07

It’s Political Thinking with Nick Robinson and it’s on Saturday.

BlackeyedSusan · 10/02/2023 09:23

Glad someone did. I was sitting in my car and slightly distracted by the neighbours dog. )

Left my reading glasses in the car as well so apologies if the spelling is crap or autocorrect has autoincorrected

nilsmousehammer · 10/02/2023 10:02

Straight to the point as always.

Two convictions for rape not sufficient evidence for the SPS to decide on the risk to female prisoners?!

Wtf are they all smoking in there!

nilsmousehammer · 10/02/2023 10:03

Increasingly clear this a back of a cigarette packet policy called "desperate fudge to try and get the general public to calm down".

It should work for them about as well as their 'risk assessments' do for female prisoners. Except their showers will be a lot less traumatic.

The BBC online headline is infuriating - "Trans prisoners in Scotland to be placed according to birth gender",

WTF is a birth gender?! Babies don't have a gender, they have a sex.

At least the interviewer in the clip calls it, several times, "sex at birth".

That headline says birth sex? not gender.

Not only that but this:

"We know about these other cases because information about them has made it into the press over several years.
They are not a secret that has emerged only in the last few days.
And if any of them had to be held in segregation while in a women’s prison for any period, ministers would have known about them, because they would have been required to sign off the decision to restrict their contact with other prisoners.
But none of these cases appeared to trouble Ministers."

That headline says birth sex? not gender.

In that case they’ve changed it since I complained about it.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 10/02/2023 12:23

Well done @borntobequiet !@borntobequiet ! Certainly says "birth sex" now.
But KB still talking about prisoners with a HISTORY of violence against women.
Still doesn't get it. No males in women's jails. None. Ever. Whatever their history!

jellyfrizz · 10/02/2023 12:26

The SPS did use the term birth gender rather than sex though:

From the BBC article:

SPS chief executive Teresa Medhurst said in a letter to Mr Brown that was published alongside a summary of the Bryson case review that she had ordered an urgent review of all transgender women in Scottish prisons.
She said: "Until these reviews are complete, any transgender person currently in custody and who has any history of violence against women - including sexual offences - will not be relocated from the male to the female estate.
"In addition, any newly convicted or remanded transgender prisoner will initially be placed in an establishment commensurate with their birth gender."

I think it's important to note what they actually said because "birth gender" is not clear at all.

jellyfrizz · 10/02/2023 12:28

It may suit their cause to misrepresent this as being a fix for males in women's prison when actually allows them to carry on as they were.

MargaritaPie · 10/02/2023 12:33

I understand nothing has actually changed.

Trans prisoners will still be decided by the prison system on a case by case basis what prison they will end up in. This has been the case for a long time.

If a prisoner is held on remand at a certain prison that doesn't mean that's the prison they will end up in for their term.

Good and well done you. If enough of us keep complaining we can get results.

Some were obviously going to prison of their preferred 'gender' whilst being assessed I assume. This will stop under these temporary measures.

So you can still force sex offending men into the showers of terrified vulnerable women? Crack the champagne!

Jeez. 🙄

nilsmousehammer · 10/02/2023 13:45

Rather like the nutcase today doing all baffled faces about why it was unacceptable to take pictures of self with knife or talk about throat punching women who weren't trans (for some reason unspecified, possibly that they dared to exist)....

I swear increasingly I'm looking at those supporting this and actively seeking and celebrating possible harm to women and thinking there is something fundamental missing in these people.

bellinisurge · 10/02/2023 13:55

But I thought they had a well established and trusted risk assessment process . Probably as good as the Met Police's officer vetting process.

Thank you @borntobequiet . I considered complaining about it this morning but they'd already changed it when I looked.
