Hi all,

I’ve been a lurker here for many years but just registered the other day. For the first time I’m seeing the gender debate actually being properly debated outside of Mumsnet. It’s giving me hope.

For so long I read the posts on this board with growing concern. I’ve a 16 year old DD and really wondered what sort of world she would grow up in if our sex based protections were removed. It’s bad enough as it is. Society seems to be riddled with misogyny and it’s very hard to unsee once you’ve seen it.

I tried to talk to family and friends about what was happening but it would get heated and in some cases they just wouldn’t believe the lunacy around it or were #bekind. It was so disappointing and frustrating.

I know it’s not over but my tiktok is awash with this now, so is DDs, the truth of it finally being exposed.

Only for Mumsnet and all of you I would have been none the wiser so I just wanted thank you for the insightful posts, the resources and the evidence you’ve posted over the years.

I'm thankful too.

Hear hear.

MarshaBradyo · 04/02/2023 11:22

Me too

heldinadream · 04/02/2023 11:27

It's been a haven of thought and sanity and has helped me think about and articulate the subject. I am extremely grateful to mumsnet for this. And to the women who post here! Also - Ukraine, Brexit and a few more things. The great intelligence and persistence of women in the face of society being rather a shit show.

To all our new posters. Come on in. Welcome to the terven.

Please, sit down.

I am really heartened to see you say your dds Tiktok is awash, I wonder how much it is cropping up depending on her algorithm. I have been wondering how my dc are going to process the shift and hoping that the more truthful discourse will allow a supportive way through all this for those of them and their lovely friends who have been influenced and who have identified or transitioned in accordance with the gender ideology which has now been exposed. And no, ime they are not stupid or all additionally vulnerable (though some are). They are human and acceptance seeking and questioning and young.

HisCappaWasDedatedFromHisHead · 04/02/2023 12:23

@Boiledbeetle I’d love a Heineken. Bank hol weekend here so why not 😁. Thanks for the welcome.

@Parisj I wondered about her algorithm too but up to now there was not much populating on mine or hers. Could find it if you went looking for it but was mostly no debate. I brought it to her attention when I started to read about it here years ago. Maybe it’s owed to the fact that it’s younger people responding now too thankfully.

I have an adult friend who uses tic tok. She's says hers had changed recently and there is so much more good stuff being pushed her way. And she had been using it to monitor mainly TRA type stuff.

HisCappaWasDedatedFromHisHead · 04/02/2023 12:35

@Boiledbeetle Long may it last, it really does give hope.

Do you think the reason some women have got behind #bekind is because they honestly don’t know the consequences of it? Like they’ve been lucky enough not to witness or hear about male violence against women/girls. They see the progress in womens rights but don’t realise what it took to get here?

OP posts:
3beesinmybonnet · 04/02/2023 12:40

I dont post often but read and learn a lot from posters who are so much more intelligent and articulate than me. It helps me to put my thoughts into words.

Thank you so much to all of you xx

ToosoontoMonday · 04/02/2023 13:16

Me too. Not been here long but keep coming back for the common sense.

Current ideology on transgender vs womens rights is terrifying. Love you all

LizzieSiddal · 04/02/2023 13:20

Wholeheartedly agree with you @HisCappaWasDedatedFromHisHead, this board is just amazing.

Plus I’m not great at expressing myself, so don’t get too involved in discussions but I read threads every single day. I’ve learnt so much and am so grateful to all the intelligent, amazing women here.Flowers

I have no idea what's going on with the be kind women. Be kind was never in my vocabulary, so I'm just shocked, but I really don't get why they are doing it.

I presume social conditioning as a child (didn't happen in my family) and not thinking about unintended consequences of going along with it, not realising it wasnt a benign thing.

Some are the wrong age, or have had luckily charmed lives with regards the worst that men and society can do. And Yeah have no idea how far women's rights have progressed in the previous two generations. They have no idea of the literal sweat and tears that went into the freedoms and rights they have today and don't realise exactly what they are giving away.

Then there is the unaware completely lot. I've got a couple of friends that just don't watch the news or use social media, and they have been completely oblivious to all of it. But it doesnt take this group long to understand, when told, that's it's not good for women.

HisCappaWasDedatedFromHisHead · 04/02/2023 13:46

@Boiledbeetle I can’t get my head around it either but I suppose if you’re oblivious you’re oblivious. Lots of things I wouldn’t know about too but even when reading some threads on here backed up with receipts and people still refuse to acknowledge safeguarding risks. Same experience with some family members. It blows my mind.

I didn’t know much about feminism or the struggles of women I had to actively look into it. Would love if they highlighted it in schools, that and maybe something like the freedom programme for young people who have been lucky enough to be sheltered from it.

I don’t use TIkTok but I follow internet trends generally and lurk a lot of trans related Reddit subs and have seen lots of trans posters complaining that the TikTok algorithm doesn’t seem to be able to discern between pro and anti opinions on a single subject.

The algorithm see both trans and terfy content as one thing, because both are using the same hashtags.
And then, because the TikToK algorithm prioritises time spent watching over all other factors, and because young trans people ‘hate watch’ videos with ‘transphobic’ content, the terfy stuff gets springboarded out onto more and more feeds.

The only way trans people can stop terfy stuff spilling onto trans TikTok is by not watching it, by clicking off as soon as it starts. But they don’t, and because TikTok moves so much faster than comparative social media (due to short videos that auto play, rather than manual scrolling) the same phenomenon that is happening elsewhere (more and more people speaking up) is happening at warp speed on TikTok.

9to5mac.com/2022/12/20/how-tiktoks-algorithm-works/

Dylan Mulvaney’s astonishing rise to fame amongst the normies is (ironically) going to act as a massive stepping stone that ushers TerfTok onto normie feeds.

HisCappaWasDedatedFromHisHead · 04/02/2023 14:00

Thats really interesting @Parisj and good to know. I would have thought tiktok has the most accurate algorithm to push relevant content to users. Hopefully it stays this way on this issue at least.

As far as I can work out from a quick Google TIkTok made some deliberate alterations to their algorithm towards the end of last year in response to criticism re: radicalisation caused by wormholes of single topic, increasingly extreme, content.

So the TikTok ‘not being able to discern between pro /anti and trans/detrans’ thing that trans Redditor’s have complained about may well be the results of a deliberate action instigated by the company in Sept/Oct 2022. That change has likely enabled TerfTok to hitch a ride all the way to the front pages of the app via Dylan Mulvaney’s silly, frilly coat tails!

HisCappaWasDedatedFromHisHead · 04/02/2023 14:25

Wow! Exactly the way it should be to be fair for any argument/debate! Fair play tiktok 🙌

That, combined, with the tras being unable to tear themselves away from watching their two minute of hate terf videos at the same time as people genuinely presumably searching for the other side of the argument as things but the news, has hopefully turned the 🐇 hole the other way. So people are climbing their way out of the warren of no debate.

Wonderful, I love these kind of threads. I'm also grateful to the wonderful women (and occasional man) who post on these boards, I have learnt so much and try to pay it forward where I can.

It's fantastic that the discussions are now mainstream. Gender identity ideology cannot stand up to scrutiny so the more sunlight the better. People, including youngsters, aren't stupid, they will see how illogical, sexist and homophobic it is to make polices and organise society around how people privately feel about themselves rather than the material reality.

NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom · 04/02/2023 15:23

Oh! I forgot to say (easily distracted, me!) that I also love Mumsnetters.

I appreciate it as a place where we can think aloud and improve our understanding through reciprocal, conversational, exchange.

And I like the humour.

Not many places offer both.

HisCappaWasDedatedFromHisHead · 04/02/2023 15:33

Agreed @NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom I’ve laughed out loud alot at some comments and like @3beesinmybonnet and @LizzieSiddal the posters here articulate my thoughts better than I can 🙏

Let's face it, this week's debacle where Nicola invented the sex class 'rapist' in order to avoid facing reality has been eye opening.

No one actually believed that rapists were being incarcerated in women's prisons. I mean, it's so far fetched, why would you? It sounds like a dystopian fever dream.

Then Nicola stood there are defended it.
