BBC apologise after gamer accuses Harry Potter author JK Rowling of transphobia

The BBC apologised after it allowed a pundit on radio to accuse JK Rowling of transphobia and did not challenge her on her claims.

Evan Davis hosted a segment on Radio 4's PM show on Thursday where he asked two gaming journalists about the upcoming release of Hogwarts Legacy which is due out next week.

But one of the pundits went on a rant about how the Harry Potter author was transphobic and had built up a campaign against trans people.

I know there are multiple threads about ED & PM but thought it would be nice to make sure this apology has its on entry on FWR as I am sure it has played a role in this!

I bet that was prompted by a legal letter

IwantToRetire · 04/02/2023 01:30

Oh yes - hadn't really thought of that. But either way glad they have done it.

Just wish they would dump ED. He is generally hopeless, but absolutely biased about trans rights and abuses his position to get give TRAs a platform on the BBC.

Another win for JKR!

This made it sound as though ED was innocent apart from not challenging the rant. I didn’t hear it. Is that true? Or did he seem to warmly go along with it?

"Stacey Henley, Editor-in-Chief of the Gamer website, said that she would not be reviewing the game due to the alleged actions of Ms Rowling.

She said: "We are not covering the game at all is because Harry Potter and the world it exhibits is just entirely connected to JK Rowling but she has a platform that sue uses to push transphobia, uses it to build up what I would call a campaign agains trans people, especially in Britain.

"So for me, it's not a case of you shouldn't enjoy the game, but supporting the game continues to give JK Rowling a platform which she can use to hurt people."
She later urges a boycott of the game as she says "I think moving forward you're not being asked to give up all those childhood memories. What you're being asked to do is think of the impact of continuing to support future endeavours.""

But I thought we were to let women speak and not be silenced? Or do you only mean women who agree with JK Rowling?

WallaceinAnderland · 04/02/2023 01:50

JKR is so clever. She is always several steps ahead of them. She is so savvy with her books, donations and now this game. Of course they will buy it, every one of them, and play it in secret.

I am not sure what you mean. She was not silenced.

The complaint is that Evan David stayed silent in the face of her false, unsubstantiated allegations against JK Rowling. P.M. is supposed to be a factual news programme.

NewBootsAndRanty · 04/02/2023 02:08

@MargaritaPie you're citing a spokesman of the the 'let trans women only speak' movement, love.

MargaritaPie · 04/02/2023 02:13

"her false, unsubstantiated allegations against JK Rowling"

JK Rowling seems to ask about once a month for "receipts" of her transphobia. Every time people reply to her which she seems to conveniently ignore.

.

Apollo441 · 04/02/2023 02:46

Everyone of those allegations is complete bollocks. So objecting to the erasure of the word woman in relation to woman is mocking trans inclusive language or pointing out the Alex Drummond is not a lesbian. Does the truth hurt? Only in your bizarro world where everyone has to cow tow to the trans agenda is this transphobia. Away with your deranged nonsense.

Norma27 · 04/02/2023 03:06

@MargaritaPie you are making yourself look very foolish again. Plop off again now.

You made almost this exact post on the 15th of January 2023, and posters pointed out the logical flaws then.

Is 'AnotherBrisket' JK Rowling's other account or did you just claim that she ignores replies and back it up by posting an entirely unrelated account?

You’re right. It is hypocritical. But I can’t deny that I relish how you hate the taste of your own medicine. Don’t feel good does it? Maybe you should sit and stew in that feeling for a bit eh?

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 04/02/2023 04:57

Nah, it's not hypocritical, because the good editor-in-chief of that gaming magazine is not a female woman type.

It's Let Women Speak not, Let Trans-identifying Males Speak. Said Editor-in-chief has a platform in their own media organ, and on the BBC. SH does not need Posie's help to be heard!

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 04/02/2023 05:05

Or maybe Let Men Speak? Hmm

I think it's women who have been silenced.

P.S. Posie is quite clear she's happy to let women who disagree with her speak at her events, but they do have to give the microphone back for the next person. The last female trans activist who took her up on the offer tried to run off with the microphone to stop anyone else speaking!

Happylittlechicken · 04/02/2023 05:38

Aw bless is @MargaritaPie getting confused again. It’s quite funny how @MargaritaPie pops up to scold us but runs away the first time anyone asks for proof or asks a question that shows that @MargaritaPie has not a leg to stand on.

absolutelyincandescentwithrage · 04/02/2023 05:40

I heard this interview and was ranting at the radio about how they were not challenged. I came to it part way through and assumed it was a man speaking. The penny dropped at the end. It was disgraceful that they were not challenged.

Merrymouse · 04/02/2023 05:59

It’s not even clear how this is a story worthy of PM.

’Company cancels future releases of HP games because of falling sales due to boycott’ would be a story

’JK Rowling accused of transphobia by gamers - is this true?, we examine the claims made against her’ might be a story.

2 gamers having a winge about JK Rowling is not a story.

I was listening too. Evan Davis was a disgrace. He simpered his way through the entire thing, leading them on and basically legitimising their patent, puerile nonsense.

He should be sacked.

The picture of the woman being held on a tight chain is chilling.

Datun · 04/02/2023 06:14

At least the paper itself is having none of it.

This was not challenged by the presenter despite the fact that it has never been proven that Ms Rowling has said anything transphobic in her career.

Her comments came despite Ms Rowling never actually having said anything transphobic. She has been slated for campaigning against the Scottish Government's Gender Reform Recognition Act which some claim is her being transphobic.

MissMarplesbag · 04/02/2023 06:15

@Merrymouse It's not a story but it's a way to brain wash and gas light listeners who might not fully understand the debate on a prime time slot. ED always finds a way to get a pro trans angle in and then feigns innocence, lots of dog whistling going on with the BBC. It's about time the government revoked its licence fee, it's not fit for purpose.

Last summer he presented the programme from a town having a by-election. He interviewed passers by & slipped in a trans question & half of them were baffled. ED asked whether the trans debate was important issue during the by election. They all replied no, it's money etc and then ED concluded that the trans issue didn't affect people as much as a certain minority made out. That piece just stuck in my head.

starpatch · 04/02/2023 06:22

I heard that piece I am glad they have apologised. They had deliberately set up the interviews for these people to accuse JK Rowling of transphobia. The fact that they didn't explain what JK Rowling had actually said made it a lot worse.

MissMarplesbag · 04/02/2023 06:29

Every time I make a complaint to the BBC, I will mention tha I think they should have their licence fee revoked. It might focus their mind a bit although I suspect it won't, they're obsessed about rainbow brainwashing.
