BBC apologise after gamer accuses Harry Potter author JK Rowling of transphobia

The BBC apologised after it allowed a pundit on radio to accuse JK Rowling of transphobia and did not challenge her on her claims.

Evan Davis hosted a segment on Radio 4's PM show on Thursday where he asked two gaming journalists about the upcoming release of Hogwarts Legacy which is due out next week.

But one of the pundits went on a rant about how the Harry Potter author was transphobic and had built up a campaign against trans people.

I know there are multiple threads about ED & PM but thought it would be nice to make sure this apology has its on entry on FWR as I am sure it has played a role in this!

OP posts:

which moved them from the ‘hearts in the right place’ section

You know I love you Rufus but ?!

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 04/02/2023 09:40

I know eresh i know 🥺

i just try and think the best of people

obviously that sentiment has been beaten out of me over the last few years…some people on here have no best

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 04/02/2023 09:43

There’s another regular on here that i used to think ‘hearts in the right place’

but now every time they appear on a thread i have to restrain myself from typing ‘fuck off you disingenuous, lying bag of shit….ive seen pond scum with more morals than you’

DevilinaCardigan · 04/02/2023 09:45

I can understand why she wouldn’t want to deal with the cost, stress, and hassle, but I wish JKR would sue the shit out of someone for calling her transphobic. I’d love to force the courts to define transphobic.
Like JKR I don’t believe that trans women are literally women which seems to be the TRA definition of transphobia. I also don’t believe in Allah (or any god) but that doesn’t make me Islamophobic.

I would never harm or wish harm on any one because of their beliefs and I’m happy for people to believe what they want, as long as I’m not punished for not believing their truth.

WinterTrees · 04/02/2023 09:46

The BBC seems to be on a policy at the moment of say what you like and apologise later in the happy knowledge that the apology prevents consequences but few people will hear or notice it and you got what you wanted the public to hear out uncontested the first time where it will mostly stick.

Totally this. And Evan Davis is a repeat offender.

Funny how when Jenni Murray crossed the impartiality line the BBC banned her from being allowed within a mile of trans issues on air and forbade her from speaking about them elsewhere too, which played a large part in her decision to leave a job she loved. It seems Evan Davis is allowed to constantly cross the line, dance a jig, sit down and have a picnic with his women-hating friends, then go onto twitter afterwards to shrug and say 'oops', with no consequences whatsoever.

There’s also an issue with a transphobic staircase, in the game…. The staircase turns into a slide when a boy tries to go up it, to get into the girls loo.

that's canon though - i can't remember which book it is but the staircase to the girls dorm in the gryffindor tower turned into a slide when one of the boys tried to go up it. Seems sensible

I did think that - but it’s been a very long time since i read the books.

Now I'm looking forward to the email from the BBC in response to my complaint about Evan Davis and his repeated misogyny bias.

"her false, unsubstantiated allegations against JK Rowling"

*JK Rowling seems to ask about once a month for "receipts" of her transphobia. Every time people reply to her which she seems to conveniently ignore.+

And………?
Where are they?

Do you know what unsubstantiated means?

To get back to the PM programme. It is intended to be a factual news programme.

Evan Davis either needed to interject the discussion to say the claims were unsubstantiated, or, explain the context of the accusation that had just been made, read what JK Rowling has actually said, and explain why it is transphobic.

JK Rowling seems to ask about once a month for "receipts" of her transphobia. Every time people reply to her which she seems to conveniently ignore.

So, that account has posted some factual things, which JKR has written and simply claims, without any sort of explanation, that they are "transphobic." Calling men men, even though they are trying to pretend that they are women. There's nothing transphobic about that and it's legally protected free speech in the United Kingdom.

DarkDayforMN · 04/02/2023 10:13

Could she sue them anyway despite the apology? I suspect more publicity surrounding "Stacy" would be helpful, as would some actual repercussions for Davies.

DialSquare · 04/02/2023 10:19

I don't think Marge (and another serial name changing regular poster) realise just how much they help our cause with their posts. Any lurkers can see the total lack of coherent argument from the opposition and the insistence on posting things that have been rebuked over and over again. Also, the ignoring of uncomfortable questions asked if them.

Merrymouse · 04/02/2023 10:22

ExiledElsie · 04/02/2023 08:51

I haven't put in my complaint yet, it's still going in because that interview had no other purpose than to discuss whether JKR's views meant that anything to do with her should be avoided.

This rests on the assumption that she has done something sufficiently bad to warrant this.

If she had committed a crime or been accused of a serious crime that would have been justified. As it is Evan Davies was using his supposedly impartial platform to smear her.

Disgraceful.

I know people talk about the BBC being biased (both ways) but I can’t think of any other contentious issue that is treated this way.

Journalists who will talk at length about the intricacies of Northern Ireland or Israel and Palestine can’t talk about this subject.

The only comparable subject I can think about is Corbyn and anti semitism in the Labour Party. People on the left still argue about that, and it is deeply and traumatically hurtful for many people, but it is discussed rigorously and in public.

twitterexile · 04/02/2023 10:22

Happylittlechicken · 04/02/2023 10:25

Yup. Marg is indeed a furry. 😂😂😂.

LK1972 · 04/02/2023 10:26

Wow, that Twitter thread is so insane it's actually funny, thanks Marge, I needed a laugh this morning.

I hope lots of people read it to see exactly what the TRAs class 'transphobic', their logical pretzels and deranged hyperbole, it's a classic example Wink

2023username · 04/02/2023 10:32

Evan Davis also did that absolutely ridiculous segment on AI last month, at the same time that all other proper news outlets (including the news headlines at the opening of his own programme) were reporting on the women's rights issues playing out in Scotland. No - Evan decided to ask a fake Einstein if it was ok to override women's rights. And hey presto fake Einstein agreed with Evan. Because fake Einstein knew what Evan thinks and knew to agree with him if he wanted to star in Evan's radio programme. What a load of codswallop.

GCAcademic · 04/02/2023 10:41

I can’t think of another BBC presenter who is allowed to indulge their bias in this way. People used to go on about Laura Kunnesberg, but ED is on another level altogether.

HAHAHAHA you’re seriously arguing that JK posting a news story about a transwoman being convicted of the attempted rape of a child is transphobia. It’s not transphobic to share a news source of a trans person committing a sex crime.

Although I’m sure TRAs like yourself hate having the cold hard statistics pointed out regarding transwomen and sexual assaults. A reminder, in the UK they are much more likely to commit a sex crime than be a victim of them.

Shelefttheweb · 04/02/2023 10:48

The quote from the BBC at the end doesn’t sound like an apology. Where, exactly, have the BBC issued a public apology for slandering JKR?

Be prepared to escalate through all their complaint levels. The lower levels simply try to brush it under the carpet

Merrymouse · 04/02/2023 10:54

Do you mean in prison or in general? I don’t think there are statistics on the wider population?

MargaritaPie's posts remind me of JDMishli's as the latter, too, always missed the point spectacularly.

Which reminds me - has anyone seen JD around?
