BBC apologise after gamer accuses Harry Potter author JK Rowling of transphobia

The BBC apologised after it allowed a pundit on radio to accuse JK Rowling of transphobia and did not challenge her on her claims.

Evan Davis hosted a segment on Radio 4's PM show on Thursday where he asked two gaming journalists about the upcoming release of Hogwarts Legacy which is due out next week.

But one of the pundits went on a rant about how the Harry Potter author was transphobic and had built up a campaign against trans people.

I know there are multiple threads about ED & PM but thought it would be nice to make sure this apology has its on entry on FWR as I am sure it has played a role in this!

My husband got me the deluxe version for our 13th anniversary. Can’t wait to play it feb 7th. I’ve been sorted into hufflepuff. He’s a good man who knows what his woman wants and needs.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 04/02/2023 06:37

Where has the apology been published? Was it on the PM programme?

Merrymouse · 04/02/2023 08:16

It's not a story but it's a way to brain wash and gas light listeners who might not fully understand the debate on a prime time slot. ED always finds a way to get a pro trans angle in and then feigns innocence

But the story so far reported doesn’t do anything to explain anyone’s oppression or lack of rights. It’s just clickbaity - including when reported in the Daily Mail as an example of ‘woke’ idiots. The game hasn’t been released yet and JKR isn’t actively involved. To be honest it’s amazing that the HP ‘brand’ has performed so consistently for 25 years, but most people who aren’t gamers won’t be aware that the game exists.

An exploration of fandom is interesting, but, ironically you would learn more about that from Robert Galbraith’s recent novel…

JacquelinePot · 04/02/2023 08:17

That article:

Her [sic] comments came despite Ms Rowling never actually having said anything transphobic

Bravo! This line should appear in every single article about the campaign against JKR.

2Rebecca · 04/02/2023 08:26

I hadn't heard of this game until the TRAs started publicising it. They should have just stayed quiet and organised to push a different game they did like rather than giving more publicity to this game which sounds great. I don't play many games but will now get this one. Glad the BBC issued an apology. The sales of this game will show what a minority opinion the TRA view is

Cailin66 · 04/02/2023 08:34

Stacey Henley really is obsessed with JK Rowling, unhealthily so.

Online gaming community is full of people buying this game just to make a point.

There’s also an issue with a transphobic staircase, in the game…. The staircase turns into a slide when a boy tries to go up it, to get into the girls loo.

For me - the only issue is, wish we had staircases like that in real life.

ExiledElsie · 04/02/2023 08:46

But I thought we were to let women speak and not be silenced? Or do you only mean women who agree with JK Rowling?

I'm all for women speaking. Unfortunately there were no women involved in this interview.

ExiledElsie · 04/02/2023 08:51

I haven't put in my complaint yet, it's still going in because that interview had no other purpose than to discuss whether JKR's views meant that anything to do with her should be avoided.

This rests on the assumption that she has done something sufficiently bad to warrant this.

If she had committed a crime or been accused of a serious crime that would have been justified. As it is Evan Davies was using his supposedly impartial platform to smear her.

Disgraceful.

ILikeDungs · 04/02/2023 08:59

A BBC spokeswoman told the Scottish Daily Express: "This is a difficult and contentious area which we do try very hard to cover fairly and well on the BBC. However we should have challenged the claims more directly and we apologise that we did not.”

Was the apology to the Scottish Daily Express only? I am not sure that is good enough

Hahaha seriously?! Grin

nilsmousehammer · 04/02/2023 09:04

<Steps over today's lobbed pie and moves on.>

The BBC seems to be on a policy at the moment of say what you like and apologise later in the happy knowledge that the apology prevents consequences but few people will hear or notice it and you got what you wanted the public to hear out uncontested the first time where it will mostly stick.

Do we have any public funded bodies, at all, that at this point aren't fundamentally so bent they couldn't lie straight in bed?

"her false, unsubstantiated allegations against JK Rowling"

JK Rowling seems to ask about once a month for "receipts" of her transphobia. Every time people reply to her which she seems to conveniently ignore.

An bless, that Twitter user isn't very bright. Her examples of JKR s 'transphobia' just show that JKR isn't transphobic.

Give it up Marge.

@MargaritaPie you are making yourself look very foolish again. Plop off again now.

I like it when he posts on here, it exposes the irrationality and misogyny of the TRAs beautifully, meaning the rest of us don’t need to bother typing out long posts.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 04/02/2023 09:15

Happylittlechicken · 04/02/2023 05:38

Aw bless is @MargaritaPie getting confused again. It’s quite funny how @MargaritaPie pops up to scold us but runs away the first time anyone asks for proof or asks a question that shows that @MargaritaPie has not a leg to stand on.

Its just embarrassing

i get the same feeling when i watch david brent (love the office and life on the road) just embarrassed for them

although there have been a few posts recently which moved them from the ‘hearts in the right place’ section to the ‘what the fuck did they just say 😳’ section

I also want a staircase that can be a slide. That's like my ultimate goal in life.

Goes off to draw up plans

my dad is buying it for ds2 😀

i did offer but my dad was straight in there

Happylittlechicken · 04/02/2023 09:17

Yeah. I’m just still stunned @MargaritaPie admitted to being a furry, and that they support those people insisting male rapists belong in women’s prisons. And stating so publicly.

Brefugee · 04/02/2023 09:21

But I thought we were to let women speak and not be silenced? Or do you only mean women who agree with JK Rowling?

people are allowed to speak. They are not allowed to libel people, which is what this is, in essence. Or do you think TRAs should be allowed to continue to lie and besmirch people's names while simultaneously shrieking that despite their deep voice and beard they are "misgendered" as he which is literal violence?

In most circumstances i am supportive of people's gender identities, so i would be very upset if JKR were transphobic. Can you point me to her transphobic comments? (and don't say "do research" because I've read the essay and i read her tweets and while i think one or two tweets are a bit ill-advised there is no transphobia.

Brefugee · 04/02/2023 09:26

that's canon though - i can't remember which book it is but the staircase to the girls dorm in the gryffindor tower turned into a slide when one of the boys tried to go up it. Seems sensible

twitterexile · 04/02/2023 09:26

Those examples of JK's 'transphobia' are ridiculous. Truly. And the BBC is still a lost cause. Beats me why anyone bothers with it these days.
