Keir Starmer sides with Nicola Sturgeon on gender law

It looks to me like he's either changed his mind, or is playing fast and lose with what the word "sex" means.
I'm guessing that Starmer believes people can change sex. So single sex spaces and attraction are not affected because you can identify as whatever sex you want.

"He admitted single-sex groups would not be allowed to refuse entry to anyone with a gender recognition certificate, but said this was already the case."

Mr Wishy-washy as per usual.

He’s a coward - labour will never get my vote with this spineless git at the helm that’s for sure.

PronounssheRa · 19/01/2023 14:54

He uses a linguistic sleight of hand to try to hide the fact that his definition of women includes some males.

It's dishonest and cowardly.

CountZacular · 19/01/2023 14:58

I don't really know why he tries to straddle the line - instead of appeasing everyone he just ensures that nobody wants to vote for him.

TRAs aren't going to vote Labour. They only want parties that make trans their main issue - so Greens it will be. And they are very vocal about not support Labour on TW too. Any slighest acknowledgement of women is an instant no. The other thing I find bemusing is that TRAs aren't even what we'd consider typical Labour voters anyway - they are predominately young, middle class students who will vote for 'the thing' of the time (remember Clegg and student loans?).

Ironically working class, left leaning women WERE typical Labour voters and KS' desperation to appease everyone has lost him his traditional voters and it's not winning new groups either. I don't understand why he's just not listening to this or taking note. We need a change in government desperately but women's rights sit among every other policy, whether Labour like it or not. It needs to be taken seriously.

cortisolqueen · 19/01/2023 14:59

He's spineless and pathetic.

So desperate to get into power he's cosying up to any group who he thinks will benefit him.

He has either no comprehension of the impact of the SNP bill on women rights or he just doesn't care. I remember at the Labour LGBT hustings (back in 2019/20?) he seemed bewildered when Helen Steele (who he knew from McLibel) heckled him about the definition of woman.

I've always voted Labour but I'm not sure I can again with him as leader.

jgw1 · 19/01/2023 15:01

When you say nobody wants to vote for him, are you expecting a massive change when the next opinion polls come out measuring voting intention at the next general election.

Currently it seems rather a lot of people want to vote for him.

I hate to say it but that makes me, a lifelong Labour voter, inclinded to vote Conservative.

Beat me to it.

lechiffre55 · 19/01/2023 15:02

At a time when we need the very best alternative to the Tories, we have someone I cannot vote for as the alternative. This is such a shameful travesty.
Women deserve better than this.

He's fine with females being excluded from anything so that special males can have everything.

Most of those females from vulnerable groups.

Misogynist, exclusionary, prejudiced. And anything but actually left.

<shrug> we knew all this the day he 'web chatted' with MN.

Well that may well change with all the stuff going on at the moment finally pushing the media from no debate to actual debate.

I'm currently a member of the Labour Party. And yet. Would i vote for them at this moment in time? No Fucking way.

barneshome · 19/01/2023 15:06

All he ever talks about is TG issues to hoover up the woke vote
He has nothing else to say
Idiot

I’m taking in context of women’s right. Nobody who he’s trying to appeal with this issue - neither TRAs or women who centre women’s rights issue wants to vote for him.

Beat me to it.

But experience tells me on these threads that the introduction of facts is not appreciated - very Govian.

SinnerBoy · 19/01/2023 15:07

They're still more popular than the Tories, but they should be 50% ahead. Instead, they git wishy-washy Wally Starmer to agree with loads of Tory stuff and the religion of Transgender, so people are becoming increasingly reticent.

MarshaBradyo · 19/01/2023 15:09

Facts like you can’t change sex and males shouldn’t be in single sex spaces. Generally they are well liked.

Starmer and his cronies on the other hand - no surprises there the big fence sitter.

The Labour were projected to have about 75% more of the votes in a General Election that the Tory party, so in fact they are more than 50% ahead.

Unles you mean they should be 50 percentage points ahead, a margin that no political party in the UK has ever had.

Starmer may be a wally, but he has a similar lead to Blair had prior to the 1997 election.

Keir Starmer demonstrating why we need more clarity around the law in order to protect the many different vulnerable groups of people in this country.

If anyone would like a debate in Parliament to discuss updating the Equality Act to make clear the characteristic “sex” is biological sex, please sign petition below:

Over 500 species of fish are known to change sex as adults.

What has that to do with mammals, none of which have any capacity to change sex. Earthworms and snails are true hermaphrodites, is that relevant?

Coconuts grow high up in trees.
So what? Humans aren't fish, planets, mushrooms or jellyfish.
Fish breath underwater, can you?

Bananas don't grow on trees though.
Isn't biology wonderful!
