Kathleen Stock article about Jack Monroe

AnonWeeMouse · 06/01/2023 11:07

Kathleen Stock writes:

unherd.com/2023/01/jack-monroe-the-acceptable-face-of-poverty/

Monroe responds by blaming these critical points on Kathleen Stocks GC views.

I don't think that's fair. I think Monroe is using that as an excuse to try and avoid criticism.

Her publisher has had to release a statement about the dangerous tips in Monroe's New Book and Trussel Trust are refusing to hand it out over safety fears.

I don't think it's right or fair for Monroe to try and hide behind being Non binary or trans etc. She hasn't claimed those identities for ages has she?

Kathleen Stock’s article is highly amusing, thankyou Anon. Not sure where the GC bit really bites though

BlackForestCake · 06/01/2023 11:41

It’s just Jack’s easiest line of defence – “she doesn’t like me because I was non-binary”. It saves her having to address any of the critique.

AnonWeeMouse · 06/01/2023 11:42

As far as I can see, Stock doesn't even mention JMs trans history etc.
But JM still tweeted and blamed Stocks GC views.. JM has also now changed her twitter bio to include Queer and trans flag etc..

Thanks for that. Was trying to explain about her to my brother last night .. just sent him the article. I prefer the tips in Viz tbh.

LaughingPriest · 06/01/2023 11:46

I note everything that "online detractors" say about Monroe aand simultaneously am delighted that she brought and won a legal case against the revolting Katie Hopkins.
Obviously to some people, agreeing with Jack on that one subject means I have made rinsed spaghetti hoops into my new favourite meal forever and want to spend my days sanding down tuna cans...Grin

EarringsandLipstick · 06/01/2023 11:51

What an excellent article. It's thoughtful, accurate but never personally derogatory and is balanced in relation to Jack.

JoanOgden · 06/01/2023 11:54

Jack Monroe is a bit of an easy target for Kathleen Stock - it's like shooting fish in a barrel. KS's points are all perfectly reasonable (and her writing is as brilliant and funny as ever) but I'd prefer it if she went after more influential people. JM's days as an influencer are over, really.

picklemewalnuts · 06/01/2023 12:00

What's the dangerous tip in her new book? <misses point>

picklemewalnuts · 06/01/2023 12:01

Ah, ok. Read it now.

Theres a couple that I'd think are a bit... Dodgy.

Haven't got a tin opener? Use a sharp knife and a mallet. (One slip and you're in risk of losing a digit)

Most bizarre to me is if you don't have a rolling pin, use an empty glass bottle, fill it with some water, put the cork in (so a wine bottle then) freeze it and use it as a rolling pin. Freezing water makes it expand, freezing glass can't do it good. Then to suggest you put pressure on it to roll pastry or whatever? It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Theres also some about using carabiners and old t-shirts to sieve boiling hot water.

Oh dear. Sadly, I agree with everything in the article and even more so as I recognise myself in the thrift lit category. Blush

Oh dear. But I get a quiet joy out of making stock from veg scraps... I am under no illusion that it's genuinely economical though. Just, um, thrifty. Blush

Datun · 06/01/2023 12:13

It's a good article, and I know what she means.

Having to replace a knife you're 'not attached to' because you've buggered it up taking the place of a tin opener you can't afford, is obviously daft. Especially as, a couple of cans later, you'll have no knives left.

So why put it in?

It was absolutely begging someone to write about it.

And frankly, I don't think Jack Munro comes across negatively in her article, at all.

kweeble · 06/01/2023 12:23

I agree with the KS article and found it amusing.I was taken in by JM pleading poverty earlier this year and wish I’d not sent her my hard earned cash once I realised some of her lifestyle choices.
It doesn’t quite add up but she could be a great publicist for charities and child poverty causes if she gets her act together.

AutisticLegoLover · 06/01/2023 12:38

Has JM seen how much tuna costs these days? Those really struggling are unlikely to be buying tuna. Although there's the cheaper stuff I suppose.

OriginalUsername2 · 06/01/2023 12:47

She claims pretty much every identity. She’s a sympathy vulture.

Fenlandia · 06/01/2023 12:48

With the tin opener thing, JM seems to be falling for the same poverty fallacy as people who complain about benefits claimants owning a mobile phone (as if you can apply for any decent job without access to the internet these days).

I don't doubt there are people eg refugees, women fleeing domestic violence, who might be temporarily without basic kitchen equipment. But many people who are using food banks these days weren't always as hard-up as they are currently, and many are in perfectly normal jobs (albeit that pay peanuts). So the idea they need a book that tells them to risk their fingers opening tins is bonkers.

Kathleen's article is more measured than much of the frequently-hilarious social media response to this dreadful book.

Beowulfa · 06/01/2023 12:51

I believe there is an ongoing thread about Jack Monroe's proven inconsistencies on Chat or AIBU. A sad example of someone who is being made unwell by social media addiction.

And wields them with abandon!

Every legitimate criticism is a 'phobia' and her Flying Monkeys swoop in to defend her.

She's such a fucking liar. I can't bear her.

It'll get deleted.

I can't see one. I searched for Stock, Monroe etc before I posted this.

Since it's women who are more likely to be literally left holding the baby, and having to work part time, to fit in with school and to make ends meet, I do see this (thrift tips which are anything but) as a kind of poverty tourism that can invite critique from feminists.

I think the KS article is great. Often she writes quite long pieces and I can get distracted but in this one, no words were wasted.

RoyalCorgi · 06/01/2023 12:57

I thought the most lunatic of Monroe's tips was the one about creating an egg ring by sanding down a tuna tin. I mean, seriously, who actually needs an egg ring? I have never used one in my life.

donquixotedelamancha · 06/01/2023 12:59

What's the dangerous tip in her new book?

Apart from all the examples mentioned, it's also stupid to make an egg ring out of a can.

Egg rings are stainless steel whereas cans are usually aluminium. That's fine for contact with cold food, because of the unreactive outer coating, but heating an aluminium can in contact with food will get aluminium into the food. In the long run that's not good.

Looks like the most recent AIBU thread has been withdrawn.

The last one was pulled very quickly, as almost all others have been. This one survived though:
