Nhs badge issue pronouns

goldfishthecracker · 06/12/2022 23:28

Started a new job today and got my ID badge. I had to put my preferred pronouns on the form for my badge. It wasn't an option for me not to pick it.

I gave it back without picking one and she handed it back to me saying she wouldn't give me a badge without me choosing them and I need my badge to work. She accused me of being transphobic when I said I didn't want to put them on display and i queried why I had to do it.

Now I have an official badge that I have to wear on display for patients and other health care professionals to see who I am with my pronouns very clearly displayed.

I'd share a photo but it has all my ID on it!

Can I raise this as an issue with my union? I don't want my pronouns to be on display, i see no need for it at all. Apparently they're moving towards all staff needing to display their pronouns on their badge. All previous staff are being asked to hand in their old badges and get a new one with their pronouns on it

Is it me?

You are gender fluid so

Your pronouns are Zi/ them on a Monday unless it is a bank holiday then they are me/mine.

On Tuesday your pronouns are her/him unless it is the third of the month then it is him/that.

Wednesdays you Self ID as a small boy so your pronouns are lad/laddy except if there is a full moon when you are lad/lassie

Thursday your pronouns are cat/kitty but if it's warmer than 15 degrees outside you are frosty/mcfrost face.

ets etc

But you don't mind having a blank where they normally put pronouns.

Also as a GC female I would feel unsafe in a hospital where staff were wearing pronoun badges. It's anti science. It's a religious cult and I would actively try to seek treatment elsewhere.

@NitroNine I know I think the '#mynameis' needs to stay front and centre, it feels sad Kates legacy is being eroded with pronouns.

I'm unlikely to be in this position ever, but I wonder whether saying 'sorry this isn't part of my personal beliefs' would work? I mean, they can't argue with personal beliefs, can they?

MrsFButton · 07/12/2022 06:44

It doesn't sound at all patient focused. As a previous poster says, it could be confusing for some. When I've been in hospital I've often been in a condition where I'd find it difficult to remember a name, never mind preferred pronouns. What happens if a patient misgenders a member of staff?

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 07/12/2022 06:45

yes you should complain
it's offensive and regressive that someone should be forced into a declaration like that at work. what if you had been struggling with your gender identity but weren't ready to decide? what if you were someone who felt that a non-standard set of pronouns were the best "fit" but that in a professional context you don't want random people to be speculating about the private details of your gender identity. it's great for there to be an option for a pronoun declaration on a badge but it's horrifically discriminatory for it to be mandatory.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/12/2022 06:56

At my local hospital the nurses call men into appointments as Mr John Smith, women as Jane Smith. They haven't got their noddles round basic sex discrimination yet.

If I were a patient and heard one whinge about lack of resources in a hospital where this was going on, I'd write to my MP.

And the NHS wonders why it's lost the respect of the people who fund it.

FWIW @goldfishthecracker I'd take some satisfaction from being very pedantic. "Oh, you want my pronouns, the ones I use? That's simple, they're "I and me".

Wrongsideofpennines · 07/12/2022 06:59

In my trust we were told it was optional to have our pronouns added. I will refuse to partake either way as I don't feel its necessary for me. Yes if you want to because you often are misgendered but I really couldn't care less if someone called me the wrong one.

Bestcatmum · 07/12/2022 07:01

We,re so desperately short staffed this cannot be reinforced here. I said My pronouns are private and I'd resign if I had to display them. My boss didn't push it.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/12/2022 07:04

I have a feminine first name, my title is Mrs, my appearance is feminine. If anyone isn't sure of my pronouns I'd respectfully suggest they give their head a wobble.

If NHS CEOs have spent money on this claptrap, I'd respectfully suggest they wobble their heads all the way to the job centre.

ImCindaCanning · 07/12/2022 07:06

Forcing pronouns on employees can't be legal can it? Gender ideology is a faith based belief akin to a religion. What would gender fluid attention seekers like Izzard have on their badge?

And to the poster who told the OP she identifies as a woman - there's not an eye roll emoji big enough. I don't identify as a woman, I just am one. I wasn't assigned a sex at birth I was born female. What is gender anyway other than regressive stereotypes of masculine and feminine characteristics?

RunPmt · 07/12/2022 07:11

I think this is just a poster wanting screenshot for their twitter cronies.

I do believe that someone in the nhs would ask for pronouns but there is no way they would be able to refuse to give you an I d badge. You would just report them surely? 🙄

Theeyeballsinthesky · 07/12/2022 07:15

Christ the NHS is stonewalled up to the eyeballs. I sympathise OP. I work a lot with the NHS & 99% of them have pronouns in their signature emails. I doubt many of them have thought beyond their mandatory beeeee kind indoctrination sorry training from stonewall

given that gender critical beliefs are protected in the workplace thanks to Maya they can’t force you to do this and as others have said, they’re so short staffed I’d be amazed if they push back too hard but it’s a horrible position to be in. Getting the policy is a great idea - I bet it’s full of gender replacing sex and guilt inducing stuff about the most marginalised etc

it might be worth writing to sexmatters & the baroness because they’re good at highlighting things like this at a systemic level.

Motnight · 07/12/2022 07:17

The NHS doesn't refuse to give out ID badges to its staff. It really doesn't.

Birdsweepsin · 07/12/2022 07:18

"It's so unusual, everyone in this hospital has one of only two surnames, Dr Sheher or Dr Hehim."

KittensNotMittens · 07/12/2022 07:25

This is costing how much? Who decided this was compulsory?

2022 and as a person with t*ts etc and I need to inform people what sex I am?

EsmeShelby · 07/12/2022 07:29

I'm a woman. I expect people to use my name when talking to me. How they refer to me when I'm not there is irrelevant to me.

peppapig79 · 07/12/2022 07:30

As NHS staff this doesn't surprise me that they are wasting this money on crap but I haven't heard about it in my trust yet through colleagues but I am taking long term leave at the moment so out of the loop. Will find out more. Ridiculous, I won't be changing it when I return.

sorrynotathome · 07/12/2022 07:32

This is very odd and I imagine that the colleague had completely misunderstood the plan (as often happens because comms are often badly worded and/or contradictory). I really don’t care how people refer to me when I’m out of the room. Why would I want to put it on a badge?

CarpeVitam · 07/12/2022 07:40

Babdoc · 07/12/2022 00:01

screamingbanshees, no woman “identifies” as a woman. They just actually are one. Only men can “identify” as a woman. Because they aren’t. Hth.

👍

respectmysex · 07/12/2022 07:41

I've always insisted my pronouns at work are 'pay me/more' and that I identify as male on payday, so I need to be on the boys club salary scale.

JacquelinePot · 07/12/2022 07:48

Join and speak to the Free Speech Union. Report the colleague for bullying, defaming you and (if we want to play them.at their own game) making you feel unsafe. Although on the latter, it might be better to use the wording found in the employment legislation, isn't there something about creating a hostile environment?

TheirEminence · 07/12/2022 07:49

You should complain about being called ‘transphobic’ and ask for a formal apology.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 07/12/2022 07:50

From NHS england Yes of course there’s no pressure to comply

and it’s allied to this Rainbow badge scheme

TLDR pressurising staff to use pronouns on badges get you stonewall points

rippleraspberry · 07/12/2022 07:51

Ndd135632 · 07/12/2022 00:26

@screamingbanshees that may be your belief but it is certainly not mine and many others. Nobody should be compelled or forced or bullied or threatened to buy into a belief system. Certainly not in their place of work.

You do your pronouns if you wish. But don’t force the rest of us who believe in reality to do the same. World has gone mad.

I agree that no one should be forced to display their pronouns and the NHS are getting this wrong, it should be optional.

However, it's ironic that you complain about bullying but then imply someone who is happy to support this may not have a grip on 'reality'. That's pretty patronising and unpleasant.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 07/12/2022 07:56

If someone believes a person can literally change sex then they really don’t have a grip on reality
